In the comics, Deadpool does in fact have a moral code, which is to never kill children or teenagers (he even refused to kill a rejuvenated Apocalypse when Psylocke, Fantomex and Wolverine were willing to go that far). In fact, child abuse usually angers him because he himself had an abusive father. This scene does a pretty good job at portraying his sensitive side. The first movie introduced Deadpool as a wisecracking, unpredictable anti-hero but the second film makes him more complex and shows that he does have moral values worthy of a hero and that he does believe in redemption.

And although he didn't completely think that action through, Wade still knew about evil and abuse all too well, and he couldn't stand by to let Russell suffer any further abuse.
