My favorite scene from Deadwood season 1. Al & Wu find out they have a common cause ;o)

I love how Al takes it to another level when he realizes that he is a victim. He is one of the most capable ruthless brilliant badass cinematic antiheroes that I ever saw. Near the top of a very selective list. My hat is off to you Mr. McShane.

I love how Al is completely calm until he realizes the actions have impacted his own inventory of product... then he starts to get agitated.

The writing in this show was beyond belief. David used to write it extemporaneously. My favorite scene which sort of encapsulates the whole show was when Al ordered the assassination of the San Francisco-based tong to benefit Wu's group and afterward the overjoyed and grateful Wu shows up under Al's balcony and shouts, "Wu, American!" and proceeds to cut off his trademark Chinese hair bob. And a visibly moved Al replies "And, she will clutch you to her bosom."

It took them to long to get another season ready and by that time the actors had outs in their contracts to pursue other work.

Bet western ever, possibly the best show ever, and at least the ending didn't suck even if we had to way 13 years for the movie.

It was a brilliantly written show. One of my top 5 all time series. Up there with HBOs rome, sopranos etc. Not entirely made for mass appeal.

My sister in law is a Chinese immigrant and I’m an Italian from the Bronx . We love each other like sisters but sometimes our conversations be sounding like this .. (she would laugh at that too . )I love this because we love each other trust each other even when we totally don’t get what the other is saying . Brings me joy !

I remember reading somewhere that Wu's "Barq-kwi logee" (phonetically of course) is a derogatory term for Caucasians meaning something like 'ghostly whites' or the more modern 'lily white MF'ers'. I think Wu understood much more than he let on-he had a knack for reading Al's expressions and gesticulations with Al playing the part of 'translator' for the audience. When mutual business gets upset, watch out for the Al and Wu dynamic duo. Love this show.

"Baak Gwai Lo" in Cantonese literally means "(White) ghost guy/person." Back when the British came to China in the 1800s, Guangzhou and Hong Kong ports were the ones they used. The locals had never seen people with such pale skin, much like what they imagined a ghost to look like. You're absolutely right though, Wu understood more than he could speak. Their relationship was hilarious yet awesome!

A favorite of mine too and add to that as well when Mrs. Garrett asks Swearingen to mind his language when they are conversing. Profanity being so natural to him, after a good start, he lapses into it and has to think a second to figure out if he even said a bad word. Great acting as always by both actors.
