Joe goes along an a few days of the 2018 Deadwood Wagon Train. This is the 6th ride of this name. It is sponsored by the Days of 76 Museum in Deadwood, South Dakota. We see great footage of all sorts of wagons pulled by beautiful teams of draft horses and mules.
The 2018 ride started in Buckhorn, Wyoming to Deadwood, South Dakota. The trail follows along some of the original Cheyenne to Deadwood stage route and part of the Custer Expedition of 1874 when 1000 soldiers explored the area for 45 days. They were able to visit three of the old stage stops.
Joe interviews Jon Mattson who laid out this year's route. He grew up in the area and knew just where to plan the route.
We ride along with Percheron owners Jerrold and Janelle Folkens in their covered wagon. Jerrold build the wagon for his elderly dad to ride in and stay out of the sun. He and his wife use the draft horses for farming which gets them prepared for the ride. His father taught him to always break his horses walking uphill. Then they think everything else is easy.
We look closely at Denny Klein's rope and pulley harness system. He utilizes this when he is doing long, multiple day rides because the lighter weight eases the strain on the horses' necks.
