Deaf and Hearing Couple: Visiting The Doctor's Office!

We're back! Here's a life update video. In this video we visit Ryan's childhood doctor who is familiar with Deaf patients. We talk about Ryan's experience as a Deaf person going to the doctor and my experience of interpreting the visit. At the end of the video I open up about my mental health and it being one of the reasons why we took a break from KZbin this past month.

I was able to sign to a customer who is hard of hearing and offered to take my mask off behind the "sneeze guard" that we have so she can see my facial expressions. I want to thank you both for that. Before, I was hestitant to sign because i thought I would make mistakes and offend someone. Watching your videos helps me with my own mental struggles. It helps seeing y'all smile at the camera and at each other. So thank you

@Ashton Sigler I know your customer really appreciated you trying. My daughter used to work at Rite Aid and she would do her best to sign to a deaf couple that came in often. They really appreciated it and she only had taken ASL 1. Keep up the good work😊

A "squid" is what us Navy Sailors use to describe ourselves. Tired squid just means you're a tired sailor. And I've definitely woke up either signing, or would have a specific sign in mind, even if I had forgotten the meaning (then remember sometime later). I took ASL, Spanish, and French while in high school. Yes in the same day. I have French and Spanish back-to-back senior year. The ASL class was my favorite class, hands down.

mitch-bittens I briefly felt that way too and I wish it was true. But I think that when people are going through something people aren’t as willing to help and are less understanding but after going through something people will congratulate you on being healthy but won’t want to actually talk to you about your experience because it’s an uncomfortable topic. A lot of people don’t want to deal with people who are mentally ill or talk about they’re own journey because of getting help is so taboo, you’re expected to solve everything on your own. I hope that made sense 😅

I watch you two and I think of my brother and his wife. While Scott isn’t deaf, he does struggle with MS so had his own set of life challenges. But he also has the same joy for life that you have, Ryan. Please keep that; I know there are people out there who don’t care to step outside of their life to try and connect with you on your level, but there are plenty of us who will - even if we need a little assistance along the way. Always cherish Ellen and Java; they are treasures! Ellen, you are a strong and compassionate young woman who has found a wonderful man in Ryan. My fiancé is French and I’m a native English speaker. I’m in my 30s and finding it super difficult to learn a new language especially when we’re long distance and I can’t practice it daily, so I’d just like to give you a huge shoutout and say I can relate to just how much love you are showing him by studying and practicing and learning sign language. So glad you guys uploaded today! I work at a bank and today I helped a woman who was deaf. I took my mask off so she could read my lips and tried to sign what little bit I know. She told me she was sorry and was so appreciative that I was helpful and told me how often times people act angry or frustrated when she tells them she is deaf and they have to help her. I told her she should NEVER have to apologize to ANYONE for being deaf and I'm so sorry that she and anyone who is deaf has to deal with insensitive people like that. I love your channel.

acalex 🤗 one by one I worked on my issues...low self esteem for example, going back to where it started (as far as I could remember) and looking at it objectively, as an adult, with kindness and logic. Started to relearn how to respond to the triggers in a healthy loving way...are you struggling now?

Prayers for Ryan's surgery. I recently had surgery and during the pre-op, I was talking to the nurse. She found out that I knew sign and said she wanted to learn. Her husband is a firefighter and EMT. I told her how I wish everybody knew sign language. I do not have a hearing loss, but I struggle to understand people in noisy environments. I did not know how much I relied on lip-reading until this pandemic happened and everyone started wearing masks. I especially wish doctors, EMT's, nurses, police, and firefighters at least learned some basic sign since interpreters are not always available for appointments or in an emergency. I remember seeing a video of a Deaf man that had been shot. The ER doctor was trying to get him to roll over so they could see if the bullet exited his body or if it was still lodged in there, but they were signing death so the poor guy flipped out because he thought that he was dying and that they were not going to help him. You are both an inspiration. Keep doing what you do. I will pray for your mental health too. Blessings!

Question: ASL stands for American Sign Language, right? Has Ryan ever spoken to someone from a different country that speaks a different Sign Language? What would that experience be like? How distinct is American Sign Language from Sign Language of other countries, if at all?

Hi, from what I know the most common or widely known would be ASL and British Sign Language (BSL). However, each countries have their own. I'm from Malaysia and we use Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) which is basically MSL. My friends from Japan and Korea also told me that they have their own SL. As to whether there are any similarities or complete opposites, I would say it's the same as language. Sometimes you can roughly guess what it is and with SL, I find that it's more easier to guess (well maybe that's just me) compare to spoken language. Alphabets are almost 95% same, from what I discovered though.

ASL has an origin in France. When French people came to the US they brought FSL and sort of combined it with some of the signs here in the US. So with that speaking there are some similarities but very few. People that use FSL can’t really sign to someone know uses ASL.

It will be different, even if a little. Many signs have translations pertinent to their country's mother spoken language. Example: When Ryan signed "ready" (the R sign being shaken), it would mean nothing for someone interpreting LIBRAS (Brazilian sign language), since the same word is "pronto" or "preparado" (the P sign oscillating in front of the torso). _that's my take_

Like, for example: ASL developed mostly from LSF (French SL) The image isn't completely accurate though; for one thing, it leaves out Nicaraguan SL. But. That being said... it's a good illustration of what SLs are related to what SL.

I just wanted to say ty for all the Q&A videos you were doing before. I know ellen was having a hard time and ryan stepped up and helped and talked alot when he didnt necessarily want to do that at that time.
