Another KZbinr said if you're testing what's the best AF on R5 you must hit record. If record is not enable the AF is set at factory setting no matter the setting you are adjusting if only going by the view finder.

Thanks for the test! My biggest challenge was getting my R6 to get the objekttracking to really stick to the object I actually want to have in focus when shooting video. It took me some tries and I found that I have to put the two servo settings to -3(!). This was quite a challenge, since I am filming myself drumming with my R6 sitting on a slider, while the angle is sideways. And like you said, tracking children is quite a challenge! I often try to film my 2+4y old, and they really are making it hard to keep them in focus. I consider this a good training :)
@DeafDirector3 жыл бұрын
Having kids in the house definitely means you get the chance to push that AF to the max, that's for sure! I really liked how the AF would stick at -3, too. Good luck getting your shots out there, and thanks so much for the comment!

You are definitely my one and only source to learn about how to use my Canon R5. Fantastic video as always. I have a question about recording RAW. The R5 allows you to record RAW and not to assign any Log. What's better pure RAW or RAW assigning Log 2 or Log 3. I am obviously new to video and don't understand this that might seem silly to most people. My second question is a request. Can you make a video of how to record a soccer game with the R5? I was trying to record my daughter and I was not able to keep up to change quickly when the ball changed from one player to the next. Thank you very much in advance

You need to enable servo in the AF setting then you can enable and disable on the left bottom corner while in video. You can also make a custom button to do that. I mapped the one next to the lens to do just that. Good luck and let me know if you need more help.

It’s usually more of a lens issue than it is a camera , sigma lenses make horrible autofocus noises as do cheap lenses

Very helpful video. That said, it raises one question in regard to the Movie Servo AF tracking sensitivity setting when shooting with the single point focus method. The only focus method that involves tracking is Face / Tracking. Therefore I wonder if that setting even makes a difference with the single point focus method. It didn't seem to in your test. The term "tracking" is confusing because before a camera could track a face or object around a frame, people thought of continuous AF as focus tracking. But that's not what it means anymore in modern Canon bodies. Tracking only refers to the movement of an active AF point around the screen. Servo AF-adjusting focus continuously under a particular, stationary AF point-is not tracking. This is the only thing happening with most of the other focus methods. (Zone focus will track eyes and faces within that zone so it is kind of a hybrid.)
@mnorena3 жыл бұрын
Excellent video, I wonder if you can tell me what setting is making the camera move. I have my camera set up with a tripod for an interview setting, and sometimes when it’s tracking it seems that the camera moves a little bit and seems that I was moving the camera but I’m not I am sure that the same but I can’t find what it is.
@DeafDirector3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I'm not 100% sure but some lenses "breath" as they change focus, this could be what you are seeing here.
@mnorena3 жыл бұрын
@@DeafDirector Thanks for the reply, this is what I mean, you can see at the beginning of the video how it seems as if I was moving the camera, but its on tripod. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6rPqZeBm9alb80
@thedavidsurowiecki3 жыл бұрын
@@mnorena Possibly the in-body stabilization is moving your sensor for some reason. Try turning it off when it's on a tripod and see if you notice a difference. Also, it could be caused by just vibrations in the room -- if the floor is wooden for example, and people are walking around on the set.
@TomWhoASMR2 жыл бұрын
This is likely caused by image stabilization. If you have the camera on a tripod, you can turn that off on the lens and/or camera.

Hey Bryan, thank you so much for this amazing Video. It helped a lot to set up my Canon R6. I came across an issue and struggle a lot and I hope you have an answer for it :) I use for filming an external Monitor and when I use the Face or Eye Tracking Autofocus while Recording a few (3-5 People) sometimes it happens that the two Arrows appear and disappear randomly and sometimes it happens (while people are dancing or quickly got out of the frame and come back again) that the Focus loses the Object and I cannot put the focus back and need to stop the Recording. Can I re-arrange the Focus with an external Monitor while recording? Thanks in Advance!

Unfortunately the camera does not transfer AF info via the HDMI cable so you cannot use an external monitor for focus aides. Thanks so much for the comment and have a great day!

Hey Bryan, did you mention which lens you were using in this test? It's my understanding that the Canon USM lenses tend to autofocus overly quickly in video scenarios and the STMs tend to be more gradual and less jerky.
@DeafDirector3 жыл бұрын
Hey Britni, I used the Canon 16-35/2.8L III lens for these tests. I found that I was able to get a pretty natural shift between points if I lowered the speed. I haven't gotten the chance to test between the USM and STM, but that would be interesting to see the differences.Thanks for the comment!

I can't thank you enough for your very informative videos. So helpful! For the second time I will be using my R5 on a shoot next week as a B-cam to my C70 for interviews and for B-roll. Some of the B-roll will again be a large conference table with a number of people sitting around it. The last time it worked out well for what I needed and I don't remember my autofocus settings. I was wondering if you have any suggestions for a situation where I might be panning across a few faces at the table. Any experience with autofocus on the R5 when you want to smoothly switch between people like that? Thanks again! Love your channel.

Thank you for your effort. I am a canon R6 user and from my experience I can tell you that canon AF is unreliable. If i have a family gathering and shoot with tested settings I still find later many signs of hunting in the footage in post. I bought a Sony a7siii and the AF on that thing is perfect. I am disappointed in many KZbinrs arguing how good canon AF is compared to Sony. No comparison…. Sorry. Canon might be good as a stills camera but so far I don’t like it for video. My opinion and everyone can disagree.
@DeafDirector Жыл бұрын
Hey Sammy, I have gotten a chance to see the two systems side by side, and while I think you can tweak the Canon to get really good results, I would say that, out of the box, the Sony system is terrific. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
@richardstirling57993 жыл бұрын
good video - thanks - shooting at 1.8 gives you a very narrow depth of field - I would shoot 4 or 5.6 to give added focus depth to cover whatever the locked auto focus misses - you can crank the ISO on the R5 and R6 and still not get much noise - you can blur the back with ND filters
@vaskoobscura_3 жыл бұрын
FYI you're doing your focus tracking wrong. When you put the R5 into tracking mode you have to tap the back of the screen to tell it what to track. You weren't doing that and that's why you lost focus on the cup and the kid. You'll know it's tracking the object you selected when you see the double white lined box around the subject being tracked. For example you have to put the R5 in tracking mode, make sure to disable eye tracking, than tap on the cup on the back LCD screen and the R5 will have no trouble tracking the cup. :)
@DeafDirector3 жыл бұрын
This is a great point. When I did these tests I was really testing out the R5's AI and internal tracking capacities in camera, but I definitely use the back screen touch selection method when I am out shooting in the field. Thanks for posting this tip for others to see. Have a great day!
