Very true. Been detailing a while now and have many good clients. The money is in regular every day clients, not dealerships, not even in fleet work really unless you find a unicorn. Dealerships hit me up from time to time and I turn them down because I know exactly what it is and I don’t have anything to gain from them at this point.

I detail for three “dealerships” One is a non profit with a car donation program- love working for them, they pay good One is a car dealership, they give me some of the toughest jobs out there and don’t want to pay anything for them.. One is a wholesaler who gives some of the toughest jobs to me and Absolutely doesn’t want to pay me nothing.. but I does give me an opportunity to buy some cars from him for cheap. And I have

Do you agree that dealerships are the best places to learn the art of detailing?

I’ve been detailing a few years and working on detailing as a business owner in the next 2 years. I currently detail for a dealership as an independent contractor and have to supply all my own tools and chemicals. They only pay me $125 for a full detail including paint correction . I try not to think about the money right now because it is my second part time job but it’s exhausting sometimes . 90% of the inventory I touch is disaster details

@brandongraham5565 I totally feel that. Think of the training you are getting. It won't last forever! Best of luck Brandon!

Used car dealers usually end up taking advantage of you in the long run. The amount of cars that end up detailed free from the volume discount vs your time won't make any sense and they won't care.

Hi, is there any chance you could answer further on this? I ask because in the mid 1990's I worked for Daytona Potntiac lol.I was an in house detailer. At the time, they very much cared for how a new car, used car etc. was handled and paid accordingly based on the job. Times and products have changed, as have I with them (products and time) but I detail now as a side business and charge quite a bit. I just got a new car in the past few weeks and it wouldn't have made it past quality control as delivered to me. Not in my time anyway. I'm trying to understand what you're saying, and am okay with whatever the answer is. I look at that car/minivan shown in the video, and would have been paid the equivelant of 8 hours to do it. Maybe 20 because it was a minivan. At the time, my hourly rate being 20.00 per billable hour. The whole world has changed but it probably would have been a 5 hour, maybe 6 for me and that's a win back then. New car preps were paid one hour, they took 25 to 30 minutes. We (the detailers) would grab them the second they came in, and make them beautiful. Honestly cared, but back then, they came pretty good from the factory. Other than a white car, none needed clay to make them look great or anything, but you took the good with the bad. What they did do (Pontiac I mean) was gave us top shelf product to use. There was training when something new came out.I only mention it because though not a dealership anymore, they changed with the time, and there was training. They wanted us to switch from Carnuba to Synthetic wax (back in the day) because they knew the synthetic/polymer would actualy last longer in the Florida sun. I want to start business right. But I don't know how you were paid for that vehicle. If I was doing the work as a subcontractor, there's no way that's a 100.00 thing or less lol. You had to kill yourself on thatj job. Though we didn't see the end result, I'm sure you did a great job on it. Should someone take dealership work?Thank you very much for the post and hope to hear an answer:). Have a great rest of your weekend.

Hey there, I can only give you the advice from my level of car lot Detailing. Our car lot sells cars that are years 2000 to 2015. In the older vehicles you are dealing with years and years of mistreated cars. Coming clean in many cases is not attainable. But you can put forth the best effort. I just started Detailing 2 years ago at this same car lot. I've watched as many videos as I can find on the subject. Many times it does come down to the expectations of the Dealer you would be working with. I have been turned down for dealership Detailing by a few places because I didn't meet their "standards". And yes dealerships have changed. Buyers aren't really into a clean interior but will buy more on the Exterior look. When I moved away from car lot pay I created my own dealership package to offer. I do know from the inside what goes into the used car sales. So I try to be fair. I've been charging $100 per dealership Detail for a year. This includes interior Detail the best I can, Exterior rinseless wash, and an engine bay wipe down. Because times have changed even new car dealerships have laxed on their way of Detailing. Sadly. If I were to Detail a 2 yr or newer vehicle I would do what was needed to hopefully make things as perfect as possible. The newer car dealerships will provide their own products and pay detailers called "lot attendants " or "porters" now an hourly LOW wage and now require much more from them. They do much more, mostly everything else and little Detailing in all. It's the smaller used car lots with older inventory that will hire outside Detailers. And they want the cheapest rate for perfection in many cases. Many are unreasonable about the final result of a Detail expecting a disaster Detail to be perfect. It's not going to happen. If you have to provide your own products to Detail you will find yourself belly up in weeks using the expensive products. I'm talking even lower end turtle wax or chemical guys stuff. The costs will eat up your money, and the time you spend on a car will also. Since dealerships have changed their quality or standards, so have their detailers. It's all about time management and finding creative ways to clean a car. And not one dealership in my area wm accept a 20 hr Detail. It's 3-5 hrs tops regardless of the car or the condition of it. See the trouble? I'm not very sure what your question is but I can, if you go into business and start at car lots, keep working to find legit customers and create a Dealership package with a set price. Work your way out of it as soon as you can. Unless you love it and it pays your bills then carry on. Here is the original video on this vehicle. It was a wholesale car. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIGli6WciLSljcksi=m7GpAggupy2vzIUz
