Corporations figured out there's no money in making things that last anymore. 😔 Planned obsolescence is a business strategy where products are designed to become obsolete or break down quickly, with the goal of encouraging consumers to buy new products. This strategy has been used for many types of consumer products, including: Cars Electronics Household appliances Software Fashion

Hey bud. Have to comment and say you do mechanics proud. Troubleshooting is 9/10 of fixing things. The first thing I noticed and was screaming at the screen was that wire from the battery to the solenoid is melted. The wire is melted as well. I've done too many repairs on things and have seen the same thing. The voltage will be the same, but the amperage will drop. When the plugs are out, the load on the wiring is less, hence the starter spins faster. Put the plugs in, the rotational speed drops, load back on. To test this theory, crank engine over with plugs in and see if that melted wire is getting hot. My guess is that's the problem.

It could also come in VERY handy when buying (or selling) a bike. The spark plug is quick & easy to remove & only takes a few seconds to look inside with a scope 🆚 the much longer process of using a compression guage.

Yet BMWs ALWAYS break down early because of all the plastic parts & gears they use. A plastic gear in the odometer of my Chevy S10 is what broke & stopped the odometer at a little over 100K miles. If it can't last much over 100K miles in an odometer. How is it going to last 100K inside an engine? 😂 Only place it should be used, is somewhere easy to change & that won't damage the engine if it breaks. Also to be used in a sacrificial gear situation that will break 1st & shut down the engine if something else breaks to prevent major engine damage. Instead of metal gears sending metal gear shavings through the engine.

We know that the engine got BEYOND hot. I say pull the engine and disassemble. With the quality level of the pieces we’ve seen used, there is no telling what may have happened inside. You wouldn’t think so, but warped metal pieces due to intense heat could be the issue. Closing tolerances inside may have galled cheap metal surfaces. Maybe it got hot, STARTED having some problems so they changed the oil. Once metal surfaces BEGIN to be affected it may have gotten worse AFTER changing oil. I think you’ll see blue rods and crap crank journals😢

Wish I could find those deals!! lol Merry Christmas!! Just a note, your voltage is not going be the same cranking as it is at rest. IF the problem is compression release, the starter is having to work harder than it normally would. Voltage will drop approximately 2 volts during cranking, up to 3 volts on the initial starter engagement IF everything is normal. If it is cranking slowly the FIRST thing to check is what the amperage draw is. The harder it is to crank, the higher the amperage draw, the more voltage it will use. Voltage and amperage reflect each other. It probably is the compression release, but remember it could also be the starter. IF the starter is worn out due to excessive cranking, the starter itself could be the cause of the excessive draw. Have a good one!!

Great methodology. Covered the basics very well- power, grounding, voltage to solenoid, and starter function. Attacking the engine- Fuel, Air, Spark, Timing. Compression but no decompression....exhaust valves on #2? Stuck valve? Exhaust system plugged up? Something is keeping pressure in the cylinder- cannot be the intake valve or you would not get compression in the first place, so it must be somewhere in the exhaust system- exhaust valve or plugged exhaust system. Since it appears to behave the same way on both sides, I would think it is the exhaust is plugged- check by removing plug from one side and seeing how it cranks, put the plug back in and remove the other, see how it cranks. If there is a noticeable difference, it is an exhaust valve. If there is no difference, probably exhaust is plugged. Air comes in but cannot get out, just my $0.02 worth. Again, great methodology- I loved it! Good luck to you!

No they don't have a decompression mechanism. Also you can take the bracket off with the airbox. I'm currently working on a 800 that is having the same issue. But on the 800 only time it's hard to turn over is when the rear cylinder has compression

My thoughts and experiences, Chinese oil on a molecular diagnosis is sub par. Chinese plastics on a macromelecular level is also subpar. If i had to guess, the machine was cold started and ran hard trying to push sub par cold oil lubricating sub par plastic causing the chain of events.

I would upgrade the battery and starter cables to a meatier gauge. There shouldn't be that much of a voltage drop with the properly sized cables. The starter could be defective. The fact that the battery cable insulation is melted shows high current draw. Is there an oiling spray bar for the cam chain?

Disconnect the power to the starter from the solenoid and then check the voltage. The starter straining causes a voltage drop, that's why the reading is low when you were cranking it.

Nice, way to search out the problem. I would have threw a starter and batter In it and kept trying to start it 😆 I would of thought it was a weak starter from stressing it so long. I had that issue but it was a Honda civic. That's why I'm not a mechanic though.

A $16k payment? Knowing dealers, he probably owed more than $20k after all the b.s. fees and bogus warranties they add on. Hopefully, it's just too high compression, making it crank slow, and it's an easy fix. Decompression mechanism, valves too tight, or timing adjustment might just fix her right up. Good luck. Btw, heated seats? Imagine that while ice fishing. I think this one would be a keeper for me because of the heated seats. Sell two others and keep this one. You might even be able to get your beautiful wife to come with you more often with heated seats.

on harley/ss engines they use electric decompression valves. start button energizes solenoid that opens a small valve in head which bleeds off compression while cranking. when engine starts release start button and compression closes the valve, i have no clue what type of system this machine has but i would think it has some type of decompression system. but... with no functioning water/oil pump..... i have very little hope the bottom end survived.

500 miles no oil or water. Still have high compression. You can only assume bad bearings. But what caused gears to fail? You gotta go till you find cause, or risk it doing it again after putting all the work in. When things fail at 500 miles, could be as bad as motor being built out of specs? Should be some factory help in paying for Repair!!

There is an electrical fault somewhere because the thick cable insulation has melted. A large current was probably flowing through the wire before the fuses. The starter rotor touches the stator. The high current drags the rotor under load. The corrosion is visible on the stator.

One thing I wanted to mention about the starter… Excessive Heat can Severely weaken Magnets, even though it looks like you are finding other issues with this machine. I use to rebuild electric motors and also use to recharge magnet housings, on a much larger scale. I have seen people ruin starters from trying to start machines over and over when there was a separate issue causing a machine not to start.

Check battery voltage while cranking. Check the voltage drop from the + battery terminal to the input side terminal of the starter solenoid while cranking. Check the voltage drop from the battery - terminal to the engine block while cranking. Check the voltage drop across the starter solenoid terminals while cranking. Check the voltage drop from the output of the starter solenoid terminal to the starter + terminal while cranking. Check the voltage drop from the engine block to the starter case while cranking. You won't see poor wiring connection issues with a volt meter (Voltage drops) unless the wire is carrying its maximum operating current.

Thanks for the great video! Is this a non-interference engine? I was worried the piston might hit a valve when the timing chain was removed and it was cranked it over. Maybe you also removed the cam and I missed it. I’ll enjoy seeing if the bearings are damaged in your next video.

By the looks of it that has ran for a long time with no water pump or oil pump working! The engine must have been really hot for the chain guide to melt. I would say you should take the cams out and see if there is any damage to either of the cams or the journals they run in. If there is that engine is scrap and you should probably just look for an engine.

Where you said you had the same problem with another one, There definitely is an overheating problem. I wonder if the port cooling or oil is too small for flow that might’ve got overlooked a little bit on engineering or there’s a problem with water pumps and it was just a water pump that was no good. That would be the best thing I think they should convert these to light aluminum alloy instead of plastic gears even the sound of plastic gear don’t even sound good….And the water pump might be working hard because of parts are too small push ports not parts. What’s the pressure of a water pump while it’s running because of plastic gets too warm while it’s working it will break down. Love your videos, buddy.

He could just do that 2 or 3 times during peak riding season, and it would make for some great content. Something tells me that he doesn't realize how popular he is now in our community. I'm positive that many of us would come together and make it easier for him to plan things out and stuff. He could probably even run across a "unicorn" machine here and there to take back home with him, if he wanted to. Seems like he's pretty happy doing things as is, though.
