Well that sucked! Thanks for nothing! But I guess thats how it goes. While the damage to the boat might seem not to bad, the fact I had zero time to consider the damage is ridiculous. Now that I've been home and thought about it a tad longer it might not have been as bad, but the principle of how they conducted business is what ended this deal. Be strong in your convictions. I visited another dealership on my way back and none of the boats with similar pricing had these issues...used boats have scuffs and scratches...but these completely removed the gel coat. And furthermore they were never disclosed despite several opportunities!

You commit to buying a $48K boat without test drive or even looking at it in person , I can get you a great deal on a bridge in the Keys , just send me a small down payment
@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors
@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
No i did not commit, i was on my way down to inspect the boat and test drive. If everything checked out i was prepared to purchase. Being prepared when you drive 8hrs is a good thing, are you implying that a person should make multiple trips, be unprepared, and waste 32hrs just on road trips....that sounds about as stupid as your bridge in the keys

@@wayneroark4715 hey dumbass...yes before I go to a boat lot that's 8hrs away before I go to a car lot to buy a specific car, before I go to an RV lot I get insurance. Which can easily be canceled. I would’ve kept on going down to the dealership. Looked like a great opportunity to get a bunch of money knocked off. Especially if the integrity of the boat was not damaged and it was superficial. I would have walked out of there with a nice boat and some of the cash still in my hand.

I remember when I bought my first used boat. It was in perfect shape. No scrapes, dents or dock rash. I yelled at anyone tying up too close to my boat to not scratch it, dent it and to use more boat bumpers. After witnessing my tirade a couple times my older cousin Jon reached down in the water and hurled a massive handful of sand and gravel at the side of my boat. His exact quote was "There. It's over. Welcome to the used boat club you F'n moron now let's go fishing already." We still laugh about it to this day, in that boat, which is now laden with scratches, dents and dock rash.

In my opinion you need to calm down. #1 You need to see the boat in person before you buy it. #2 you need to look at everything. #3 if it’s a used boat you need to ask for any prior damage. #4 if you don’t agree with any of these, either don’t buy a boat or buy one brand new.

Hey bud I appreciate the comment. Don't take this as a mean comment it is not. If you watch the vid and the following vids you will see I followed every step you mention....I also want you to put yourself in my position...take off from work....sit in traffic for hours....drive for 5 hours then get pictures you asked for days in advance while they know you are traveling the day before to get the boat, have them flat out lie and say they couldn't see the front of the boat...when they provided a single far off shot a week before, now in your mind all week this purchase and dream is building up....you've squared away what you need in order to purchase the boat.....now they've wasted your time and money...then let me tell you to calm down...if you can skip away happy I'll give you my current boat.

1. I don't have a job, I don't need a job. 2. Where I live there's not that much traffic, unless there is a car accident somewhere. 3. I wouldn't buy a boat 5 hours away, especially if I have to go pick it up. 4. Yes, pictures can help, but I wouldn't buy a used boat without seeing it in person and asking if the prior owner caused any damage to the boat in the boats lifetime. 5. I agree buying a boat can be exciting, and just because I squared away money for the boat and the boat then gets damaged, that doesn't mean I'm a step behind, in my mind I'm one step closer to buying my boat. 6. I've got all the time in the world, they haven't wasted any of my money because I wouldn't put insurance on something that I don't own yet. 7. From the picture you provided all I can see are scratches, no structural damage, just because there are scratches on the bow like someone drove up on a dock doesn't mean that that person rammed the dock, they probably glided onto it. 8. I would be the person to tell the boat dealer that they made a mistake, everyone makes mistakes, but I would say "You fixed the problem, all in all I have a boat that is better than my last one, Thank you". 9. If I bought a boat that is better than my last one, I'll be happy, so as long as that happens I'll be happy. So I'd like to know when you will be giving me your current boat?

If this is the first bass boat you have ever owned or used by yourself, you are going to end up doing a lot more damage than that. I recommend to everyone looking at buying their first boat to buy an older cheaper boat first. Use it for at least a year. You are going to do dumb things and damage it. You'd much rather those rookie lessons be learned on a $1500 lsn special than a new $40k+ boat.

+Dirty Trucker Fishing while I agree, I've made up my mind....however I did ride in a 2006 z521 today that was showroom condition and guy paid under 30k....and it was flawless.....what you fail to mention in your buy cheap experiment suggestion is that without warranties those repairs get costly quick...so a new used boat owner could be shelling out several thousands in mere months to repair an engine, some people are comfortable with that....not sure I am.
@dirtytruckerfishing1218
@dirtytruckerfishing1218 7 жыл бұрын
BeyondTheBounds the repair costs are part of it. I never took my old junker anywhere for any repairs. I learned how to find the part number and order what I needed. Knowing how to replace water pumps, impellers, propellers, starters, linkage, power packs etc become invaluable and will save you money in the long term. I think the local shop here charges $80 per hour just in labor. There are just so many lessons learned though. Even things I'm still learning in my new boat. My dumbass tore off a huge chunk of my skeg a few weeks back. But I will also tell you this. If there is anything you don't like about a boat you are looking into move on to the next. I knew the tracker I bought wouldn't be as fast as my old boat. It's top end is 38 old boat was in the 60s.... But I thought I'd get used to it etc... Nah. Having boats pass you that took off after you in a tournament is just uggghhh. Other than that I like my tracker, that aluminum hull gets into places a fiberglass boat can't and it also works like armor on debris filled TVA lakes. I've had it for a year and looking at trading it in on a 195 model tracker just because of the speed...

+Dirty Trucker Fishing I will attempt most anything non motor related...drawing the line there! Started looking into 2008 rangers...good costs...motors might be iffy though...my biggest fear is buying a 30k problem that costs another 15k to make operational again....since I can afford some peace of mind like this skeeter with a Yamaha warranty till 2021.... The extra costs is justified in my mind but to each his own....2008s looking good

This is some good advice. Be prepared to tear some stuff up on your first boat. Stuff will happen, you will learn from it but the damage is still there. I remember forgetting to latch the trailer to the ball and the trailer came off the truck at about 30 MPH. No damage to the boat but some trailer damage. Everything was still usable but it would have cost $1500+ to fix everything and that is on a trailer.
@mojoriden

Totally agree with you. A motor can be assessed, to the percentage, of its condition if done by a capable mechanic. Structural integrity as well. It takes time but it happens every day. That's how a boat dealer knows what a trade in is worth. Spend hundreds on the assessment to save thousands on the price. My first boat was 12k and 23 years old when i could have bought whatever I wanted. Sure enough I've bounced it off docks and had to learn how to work on it over the years. I've 'rescued' guys that just needed a shot of starter fluid or had a loose battery connection but didn't know their equipment. I understand wanting a new boat. They have some great new features and, come on, if youre buying a sparkle boat in the first place, looks matter. However, sound advice hear to buy used and LEARN on that first boat. Doing your own work and buying right in the first place is how you save thousands...

I hate to say it, but if you want a brand new boat for the the price of a used boat, you're not going to find it. A used boat is exactly that, a used boat. It is going to have some bow scuffs/chips, worn carpet, etc. I mean it is 3 years old, what did you expect? I think you should save up and just buy a brand new boat, if you're looking for a boat in brand new condition. Hell, I would have used that minor damage as a bargaining chip.

The only way to deal with situations like that is to stick it out. You have to do the awkward thing. Look right at the sales manager, and ask how are you going to make this right? If he doesn’t IMMEDIATELY tell you, you want to speak to the Top Dog in charge right now. When you get him/her, ask if there’s somewhere private you can talk. This is when you describe your excitement, your travel time, the insurance you bought, everything ... then describe the situation and ask the same exact question. “What are you going to do to make this right?” Decide while they’re figuring it out what you’re willing to accept. I’ve dealt with situation like that before. If they don’t care to make it right, they’re not worth doing buisness with. If they can’t do enough to satisfy, then tough deal. Move on.

... I believe the point he was making was, if they were hiding something that would be seen so easily when he arrived, what else could they be hiding and lying about that is not noticeable by visual inspection or even a sea trial? The comfort level of the deal was lost and his gut instinct said, "DO NOT BUY IT". .Just a guess.

Brother, I'm going to tell you exactly what that is from. That kind of scratching and pitting in the front of the gelcoat is an angler coming in nose first into dock slip's. If he power pole down close then that front is going to smack the walkway every time. Especially when guys are running late to come back in on time for Weigh ins. The waves are going to smack the boat up and down hitting the front of the dock because the power poles are keeping that boat tight to the front. I know you are super excited about getting a boat but honestly I would hold off. That boat was definitely given to a sponsor angler probably as a demo. It is completely outfitted with tournament style packages, and the fact that it has low hours was to do local tournaments and show off dealership advertisement stickers so local anglers would pick that up when this guy was done with it. I'm not saying the guy beat on this boat but for that kind of money you can get a brand new Skeeter with the power poles and outfitted with tournament grade electronics. If you are willing to drive like you did I would definitely search inventory at other dealers that have online photos. It never hurts to call and ask questions that will save you a ton of time. Good luck brother I know this is an absolute tedious thing to do when you just want to get out on the water. 👍👍

I was lucky. I bought my first bass boat this year in January. But I didn't buy one nearly that expensive. I knew what I'd be getting myself into, that a boat in my price would have lots of chips and such in the gel, and wouldn't be that new. Still I took a chance, no bass boats in Colorado at the time at my price (under $15k). I ended up driving to Knoxville, TN to meet a guy selling his. I got lucky and it was just as good of shape as he showed to me on live videos and such. Just keep looking, there will be a good one found somewhere.

Lol you should see my rig. I fish an 02 javelin with a 200 Yamaha thing has been abused but loved. Always keep up on your maintenance and you'll be getting 15+ years on your rig too. My point is get something you trust and that will last a long time. Any idiot can spend money on a sparkly boat the only thing that separates us from wakeboarders is the fish we catch. Those scratches aren't anything I'd worry about. Then again I wouldn't pay anything near 48k for a used boat. If you plan on fishing shallow water, stump fields, rock piles, standing timber, ie anywhere shallow a fish would hide, you're gonna get scratched. You're gonna take dings on your prop and lower unit, I've been fishing out of boats for 20 years and I still bounce of a stump every once in a while. As long as the motor is reliable and has warranty as well as there being no major cracks, leaks you shouldn't worry. No matter how careful you are as a first time boat owner you'll make some mistakes. If you aren't settling for anything but showroom condition why buy a used boat? I'm with the dealer, this boat is in mint condition. I'm not debating that it's worth 48,000 because it's not. But that boat is in mint condition for used boats in my area at least

Scratches occur on my boat nearly every time I take it out. Everything from rocks, stumps, shallow boat ramps, piers, even missing setting the hook and having a lure hit the boat. Stone chips from the highway! My point is, your boat it a tool used to enjoy the sport. Dont dwell on the boat. Enjoy the sport.

WOW dude that's nuts! It's the worst feeling when you have your mind set up you have your money in hand and all of the sudden the deal you thought you were getting just dissolves right in front of you. The dealership completely neglected to show you the damage the boat had and that is VERY wrong on their part. They prob figured if you drove all the way down there and have money in hand that they can persuade you to overlook the damage, not good! I'm sure it's for the best tho, so don't get down and out keep up the great vids and let the journey continue. (if it were easy everyone would have a glitter rocket!)

BeyondTheBounds I completely understand your frustration. They obviously didn't give the previous owner top dollar. If you can live with the scratches I would low ball, after letting them know I was pissed and had a KZbin channel. Me personally.... I would wait on a scratch free rig. Good luck and thanks for this series. I'm about a year away from doing the same thing.

Sorry abt the boat.. I was going more to the traffic angle tho.. My buddy and I went out of Leesylvania park yesterday (Sunday) hammered then in the morning including a rod breaking snake head.. But holy crap the traffic getting onto and up 95 in Woodbridge was ridiculous.. I don't know WHAT the issues are there (No wrecks, no construction.. Nothing. )but you can NEVER drive especially south in that area without a delay.. Even in the middle of the night.. I used to go from Frederick to Richmond in less than 3 hours.. Now it's most of 4 anytime.. Good luck with your search..

If I were you and still wanted that particular boat (you've invested time and money), I would renegotiate the price or walk away. An honest negotiation would be for them to make the repairs to the gel-coat or reduce the price in the amount that the repairs would cost. That way, you either let them fix it with no out-of-pocket to you; take the cash and learn to live with the damage (looks cosmetic to me), or take the cash and have someone else do the repairs. If they're not willing to work along those lines, they probably aren't worth doing business with and you learned a valuable lesson without spending nearly $50k! Win/win in my book.

I have to agree, your outrage is certainly justified. Too many people are accepting of mediocrity these days. That WAS a great boat, then the scratches made it an ok boat... Value your hard earned money and don't settle for something less than what you deserve In exchange. 48 is a lot to shell out for a boat, but guess what? Your money, your decision... and it sounds like you've decided, so don't let these people tell you how to spend it. Not in the financial position for a new boat, just have an old one that floats, but I have my money invested in myself so sometime soon I can be in your position. Keep up the good work my man, fiscal responsibility is a good lesson to be promoting in your videos. Looking forward to seeing what you decide on and then your follow up vids on how you like it. Hopefully I can take a thing or two from it when I'm ready in 2019

Forget this boat, their are hundreds more like it throughout the US>$48K sounds like way to much money for a used boat, especially for that one.. I would call the dealer and say you just can't buy that boat. Just keep looking, you may snag a pro boat. The top pro anglers get a new boat every year. Think outside the box....you can do it.

+Deadwood Pike you are correct I guess I'll need to clear up the value of this boat for people but it came with a motor warranty till 2021....most prostaff will sell their boats 1-2yr old...they seem to be driven and fished hard. I saw a 2016 bass cat and they wanted 56k for it! And let me tell you that bass cat and its trailer had seen better days. There are deals out there...this was one I liked for several reasons....before I was shown the damage of course. There are different levels of used boats...so what may seem like way too much is really not, higher new boat prices are driving used boat values higher as a side effect

This sort of thing is common when purchases are made sight unseen and a couple of pics are all one has to draw on. Boat dealers are no different than car dealerships. If nothing else, it's a ploy to get you in the door and sell you something more expensive.

Patience will win every time. Never display any emotion towards the item even though this is hard to do for some. Have them sell you the boat, car, home, etc. Give them the impression that you are on the fence, and are looking around and are in NO hurry. Ask plenty of questions, get a vehicle history report. Plenty of pics, of course. And if you are concerned about something like scratches and dings, tell them that. There is no "standard" condition for a used item so what is excessive wear and tear to one, may seem acceptable to someone else.

1st , I never expect honesty from any salesperson , it is a rare and foreign item. Did they say the boat was a demonstrator ? If they did then I would consider it used. Assuming it was new , with the notification of the damage so late in the game I would of turned around , gone home and deposited the check in my Bank. Then looked around for a more reliable dealer and a undamaged boat.

Back out of the deal man, at this point I'm assuming you haven't taken possession of the boat. Back out, take your money elsewhere, be thankful all it cost you was some time and gas, and treat this as a learning lesson. Never buy a boat, car, motorcycle, RV, or any other motorized vehicle without conducting a thorough inspection in person. Really any used vehicle, boat etc should be inspected by an independent mechanic.

So did you get the boat? Hey you have to do due diligence to find the issues on what product you are looking at that could be a deal breaker. For example, I bought a 2016 GMC Sierra Dec 2017. The back bumper had a dent, which I did not see prior to purchase. I bought that dent. I could have blamed the dealer for not notifying me--yes, but I did test drive it look at it, etc. A deal breaker for me was the old tires, so they hooked me up with new tires. Another deal breaker was the heated steering wheel switch was broken, so I got a whole new steering wheel. These occurrences happen when buying used products, but it is up to the consumer to find deal breakers and let the salespeople know. You could have had them drop price by $2500 to get the paint job fixed once you got home. Another recommendation, never write check before leaving home--you may negotiate on the price & get a better deal for a scuff or 2 on the bow!! Good luck.

For that kind of money I want to spend at least 2 hours on the water test driving. I want to feel how it trims out, if it takes water and how much. Walk the entire thing to feel for soft spots, have someone look at the transom, kinda like a transmission may be things that aren't visible to the novice that an expert might see. Then I'll cut a check, but unseen untested, and used no toucby no money.

I wouldn't buy a used boat from a dealer. There I might be something wrong with it and they traded it in or they got it from the repo auction. Those places can be easily touched up by a pro, but that should have already been done.

Was the $48k a negotiated price or just what they wanted for it? Whatever it was, on any new or used sale, I would first inspect the boat and thren make an offer. How did you plan your trip where you would NOT get to the dealership with plenty of time to haggle? Sale of any boat or car or motorcycle or anything of great value, takes time! Good luck!

I was headed down the day before and told them i wss doing so, in order to be there first thing in the morning. 48k was the asking price and given the age, hours, and condition at that time i was willing to pay the asking price. BIG Dealers wont haggle very much on boats, they have the volume. This was probably a great boat looking back the damage was truly minimal, but i had asked for the info several days in advance and they provided it incredibly late in the day and lied about the information, basically contridicting themselves. Overall the biggest thing was i lost faith in the deal...i wanted a perfect boat with no problems...and there is no such thing.

Can't tell what exact model and year the boat is but being a Skeeter, 250 SHO, w/dual powerpoles, 12 inch Lowrance, this boat will retail new for nearly $70K! So is $48K really too much for it?

Yep good ole Marshalls Marine! I bought a 2014 FX new there a couple years ago I "thought" I got a great deal and had nothing but problems. Rub rail was damaged when I got there and drove 8 hours from south Alabama to get it. Needless to say it went back to the factory for repair last year and Skeeter ended up giving me a new boat. Part of me believes they knew about the boat having issues and sold it to me anyways. After 3 years of owning it I reached out to Mr. Marshall himself for help and said he would call Skeeter and personally call me back. Needless to say I never heard back from him. After learning my lesson they are "cheaper" for a reason.

It's not their fault you live 4 hours away its not their fault you decided to show up a half hour before they closed. I think they honestly missed the damage and once they found it they sent you a picture of it right away because why would they wait until you are almost there to send the picture? They would have just not sent it at all and you would have seen it in person. Shitty situation no doubt but shit happens.

Sorry to hear about the situation. I couldn't tell from the pics you sent how deep the scratches are (granted i am watching from my cell phone). The gelcoat is pretty thick on most boats so you might be able to buff that out. The dealership, at the very least, should discount the boat further or repair it themselves for free. I honestly don't believe the deaership when they told you they couldnt see the scratches from the way it was stored. When a dealership gets a trade-in, they go over the boat with a fine tooth comb to find dents/dings to give the seller less of a trade in. I hate to say this because i know you're excited getting a boat, but, if it doesn't feel right, walk away buddy. There're are plenty of other boats out there. Best of luck to you and let us know how it goes!!

On buying a used boat, I would demand a sea trial, (on the water test), before buying. Check that all features work properly, or not, and especially the outboard for idling, shifting, tilt/trim, and top end performance, and finally inspect the bilge, stem to stern for water leaks before making a deal. Scratched/gouged gelcoat is a bummer, but having warning buzzers going off the first time you run it is much worse, and more expensive to repair. Remember, you have the money, you're in the driver's seat.
