Dealerships Just KILLED The NEW 2023 Nissan Z

The new 2023 Nissan Z just got RUINED by Dealerships. The Nissan Z is finally hitting dealerships with the release of 240 Nissan Z Proto special editions. The 2023 Nissan Z Proto Spec offers exclusivity, excitement, and exhilarating performance. With only 240 being built, seeing one will be rare. And seeing one stopped - well, this is a sports car that loves to be driven. That last sentence is where all the problems with the 2023 Nissan Z launch begin.
This... is how Dealerships KILLED the new 2023 Nissan Z.
Nissan is slowly dying, and the release of the new 2023 Nissan Z was supposed to be the car that dug them out of their 6 ft hole in the ground. But as dealers always do, insane markups over MSRP screwed things up for the iconic Japanese brand and completely killed the 2023 Nissan Z launch.
If the 2023 Nissan Z wants to be competitors like the Toyota Supra, Ford Mustang, Subaru BRZ or Toyota GR Corolla... it needs the sales numbers to back it up. It must be a huge win for Nissan. Hopefully we can stop this disaster that car dealerships have created.

The GM Dealerships where I live have TONS of Hummers, that they sold each other so they can sell them used at two to three times the New MSRP. These dealerships are ass holes number 1 and number 2 they are idiots. The New Hummer can't even be driven on certain roads and maybe even in most driveways due to its weight. I worked at Nissan HQ and personally launched the Z back in 2002 (many great stories). We correctly anticipated this and worked with dealers on a joint business plan in the pre-launch phase so that the big markups wouldn't happen. But more than that, we treated Z loyalists as total VIPs and gave them the 'insider' treatment. The result was a 100% successful launch with high customer satisfaction. Sad to see the current team doesn't seem to have followed the same path.

I won't either, but the problem is, most people WILL. And as long as people pay it, dealers will charge it. It's killing the entire car enthusiasts industry. Same problem with the manual supra right now. 10k is the lowest markup I've seen, with most asking over 100k for them. That's more than the porsche that the supra was brought back to compete against. And the porsche is nicer inside. And mid engine... The point of the supra is a semi affordable sports car. But dealers price them out of their targeted customers.

There are a lot of horrible things going on right now, and I appreciate videos like this expressing the frustrations of car buyers. I had this crazy idea earlier this year. I want a new Corvette. The base model, which is the lightest and fastest, is fine by me. I can build one on the Corvette website and for the options I want, $65k. Deal of the century for performance. My crazy idea, which made sense until we entered this alternate universe, was to buy it when the new ZO6 came out, because that is where the interest would be and I could likely get a great deal on the "old" base coupe. I could not be more wrong. You cannot get a new Corvette, unless you want to wait a year with a deposit, or, pay anywhere from 10k to 30k markup. Forget about ordering one. I know two people who have put deposits down well over a year ago, with no car. I called dealerships all over, including those that people have stated would not charge over list. Either they cannot get the car, or they have markups. The big buzzword? Supply chain issues. Right. Supply chain issues for literally years, when there is not one other commodity that you buy that is not available. Barbecues, stereos, computers (what was that about chip shortages?) building materials, tools, and everything else I buy is in full supply. So I figured, maybe one of the hot Challengers or Shelby Mustangs. No, same BS story. Laughably, Dodge is bringing out a whole series of super special, hot performance models, just for 2023, before they completely close down Charger and Challenger production. As I have stated before, unless you have $150k and want to waitlist, you aint getting any of those. I called the biggest Ford dealer in California, and he said I MIGHT be able to order a base Mustang GT, but it was iffy. Sorry, I passed up the Mustang GT level of a new car years ago. I want, more or less, the high end model. I was thinking that the perhaps the Japanese market might be different. But from this video, looks like they are pulling the same BS. There is only one explanation. Manufacturers are gearing up for the stupid EV push. They are getting money from governments in a variety of ways. They certainly don't care about you, the consumer. They'll make just enough cars to get buy until consumers are FORCED to buy EVs, and then they will flood the market with them. Watch and see. There is NO reason not to build cars to satisfy demand. At least Dodge is, as disgusting as it is, being open about it. I think what is going on is a form of "soft fraud". You want to build limited editions of cars and let them sell at high prices? Go ahead. You want to throw big markups on cars? I cannot stop that. But don't you dare put out websites, let me build the Corvette I want, show me the price, and then tell me BS about the dealer selling at whatever price they want. Manufacturers are telling me something is available at a price, and nothing is available at that price. And not just the specialty cars, all the cars. This is the worst time for enthusiasts since the mid 70s when all cars turned to junk and you could not find anything with guts in it. Oh, and that was thanks to our stupid government as well.

Greedy ass dealers looking to fleece potential buyers. Why provide a decent and reasonable buying experience when you can just fleece someone. That 50-100% profit won't be matched even by a repeat customer. Which, Nissan should be stamping out like some of the other manufacturers have when it comes to ridiculous markups. I live in middle TN right between the Nissan manufacturing plant in Decherd and Smyrna. I don’t work for Nissan, but what you are describing is the EXACT same for every single other dealership that I see. Dodge/Ram/Chevy/GM/Ford/etc are ALL allowing dealers to throw whatever pricing they want on those vehicles. The advice I give my daughters is to wait. The vehicle bubble is bursting. The longer you can wait, the better deal you can get. ALSO, If your local dealerships are using “ADM” or “Market Pricing” to justify their exorbitant prices, extend your search OUTSIDE your area. Those terms might as well be short for “You people that live around here are SO damn stupid that we can mark our prices up over and above what folks in other cities have to pay!” So, if that local dealer moves fewer units, they will get fewer new allocations in the future, hopefully leading to their deletion if they don’t change their ways.

Not sure what's gong on at Nissan. After being rescued by Renault few years ago, and not only financially, but also offering much better platforms and helping to reach better reliability. I understand the "Carlos Ghosn problem" situation, but if you evaluate the plus and minus, it was really beneficial to Nissan. Nissan refused to share platforms for the electric vehicules. Today Nissan has only one aging electric car and no hybrid. They have a great flagship with the Z, but killing it. Now they want to split with Renault, and I honestly hope Renault will get rid of Nissan and accelerate the merge with Mitsubishi automotive. Nissan can not survive alone, and would be purchassed by a chinese industrial group to reuse the name to badge their cars, just like they are doing with MG, and partially with Volvo.

I remember when the S2000 was released. I was so excited because there basically no other 2-seat sports cars in the price range of the original MSRP. However, when it hit lots, they were ALL marked up and priced right out of my range. It is easy to blame the manufacturer and the dealerships. But they sold. They couldn't keep them on the lot. Not only that, but people were flipping them for more than they paid for them. Dealerships get away with this sort of thing because at this price point, for an anticipated release such as the S2000 or Z, there will always be people with deep pockets and those willing to spend more than they can afford (whether it is speculators or enthusiasts). If everyone insisted on MSRP (or below), they couldn't do it. So the predatory selling tactics are disgusting and executed by sociopaths, but only as disgusting as the market will bear.

Rounded back, scalloped headlights, classically inspired Z interior....and claims that it would be the "affordable" sports car option to counter the resurgence of the Muscle cars.... What we got was the 350Z that looked NOTHING like what we had been shown for years, and was FAR from affordable! The press releases all said in order to be and stay competitive, the new Z had to be prices under $22,000.....the BASE 350Z that was initially released was over $34k, with models/options that would see it go over $55k. Today's business greed strategy for all markets involving vehicles, property, and most products: Markup prices by 50-100% or more because someone will want the product so badly that they will pay "through the roof" or anything for it and they will make more in one sale that would in multiple low budget sales. For example, I'll use gas prices: Case: Selling gas at $5 a gallon for a car that has a 15-gallon tank versus selling it at $2 a gallon in the same size 15-gallon tank 1. @ $5 a gallon and for one buyer that equates to $75; @$2 a gallon and one buyer it's $30. 2. To make the same amount of money at $2 versus $5 you would need to sell another full tank and a half. 3. The earnings are insane the more you have people ok to and willing to pay the markup. 4. Let's say out of 100 people 20% are willing and able to pay the price of $5. That's $1500 with only 20 people out of 100. 5. At $2 a gallon they would need to sell to 50 people to make the same amount while also controlling supply and demand. Sure 100 people buying at $2 a gallon would profit more but the thought is to eventually to get all 100% paying $5 a gallon because as time goes by, the more people start to give in to the new "standard". Once everyone is on board at paying $5 a gallon which equals to $7500 per 100 people with 15-gallon tank, it's an insane increase of profit verses $2 a gallon and getting $3000 every 100 people with a 15-gallon tank. $4500 profit or 60% increase in revenue. This logic is being used across the board and I thought they were going there with eggs a month or so ago. What they do is introduce an insane price (especially in California) and see how many people are still willing to pay that price. They'll do the math and see the profit margins. They'll provide "some type of relief" later to make the gullible happy but it will never be as low as the price you were paying before the crisis. In calculated time later, they will inject the mark up prices that they wanted all along while most are distracted with some other crises such as Covid. Do the math on everything that is insane in price that I showed above, and you'll see that it is what they are doing. It's going on with everything. It's greed to the max and they don't care as long as that insane profit is coming in and nobody is standing up and fighting it. Like I said before, this is not directed at the top earners or those with deep pockets. You earned your wealth however you did and that's great. I just wish that you guys would show more restraint and not just throw money at everything. Yes, you got it and can do it but how long will this last before prices get marked up so high that it will eventually start affecting you because unless you're in the top 1% of world wealth, there's always somebody with deeper pockets.

Nissan has hit the point where they’re in such dire need for money that they’ll sell a $40k car for double, but in doing so, shoot themselves in the foot, cause they’re only going to sell a VERY small number. They would’ve made a killing if they were selling them for a decent price. Selling more at MSRP would have yielded more money in the long run than selling a few at Astronomical gouging prices.

I have been excited for the Z and even thought about getting one. At this rate, I'd rather just look for one of my dream/cool cars from when I was in high school in the late 90s/2000s and build my own car instead. I was also excited about the new BRZ/86, but hell even the first gen models of those are getting ridiculous markups at dealers. And to be fair, even those 90s/2000s cars I'm looking at online private sellers often have ridiculous markups from "I know what I have" people. No you don't evidently. You got a Civic DX with a blown motor and no passenger door, that ain't worth 7k. But I am voting with my wallet as a lot of people fail to do. I am only making a purchase when the price is realistic and I am not buying with just my heart. I get lusting after your dream car and willing to pay an arm and a leg for it, but in this case the dealers are already charging an arm and a leg, so I hope you guys are all able bodied and can sell both arms and legs for this car.

I think the only way the msrp markup crisis will be fixed is if the manufacturers take control of the dealerships, make every dealership corporate so they can’t markup pricing to pad pockets. I’ve noticed this with Toyota recently, go to a family owned dealer and the prices are easily 10k+ over msrp whereas corporate owned just has shipping, inspection and whatever package fees (if any) so like 1-3k markup which way more reasonable. Now I also get this brings up the whole corporate vs family problems but the easy solution is keep everyone that works there but just enforce pricing.

It was those damn broncos that kept ford from getting me the base ranger 4x2 I ordered last year. See September of last year I ordered a base ranger XL-100A with just a few common sense options ( trans cooler, limited slip locking diff etc). In November I discovered they ordered it as a 4x4 ballooning my 29k base price to 34k ( 5k over my maximum spending limit ). They had to resubmit the order in November 21 and then I waited and waited and waited ( meanwhile my other truck was plummeting in value which I was going to use for down payment if I wanted to buy it out ). Well in January I got tired of nobody being able to give me a straight answer and leased a 2022 Tacoma SR 4x4. Over a year later ford emails me blaming “ production delays “. A year later?!! A year later???!!! Every time I read it I’m glad I called the dealer to cancel and buy the Toyota. If ford can’t meet their 6 to 10 week claim then it’s not worth buying

I was stupid lucky getting my challenger scat pack at msrp. Like I kept asking through every step when someone new touched the paperwork what the price was and I was never told anything different than the MSRP for the spec I had. And then at the signing of the purchase the total cost was MSRP. The sales manager said he watched nearly every dealership he knew personally go under cause they would mark up minimum 10k even on a 12k $ car. Needless to say the Dodge / Fiat / Chrysler dealership I went to is like one of the only ones still open in the area. Granted that was just the sales team, their maintenance staff are notorious for joy riding nicer cars so I never returned after buying the car even for the promotional service prices. Not worth it if I can't even trust the guy who is supposed to "keep it running at peak performance" and he can't even clean the oil off his hands before sitting in a brand new car.
