Dealing with Bitterness

Thanks!! I have a friend strongly struggling with bitterness to the point of latent atheism. It's pure blasphemy but he doesn't want to stop. It went from bitterness to waiving his fist at heaven to sometime a more calmly "I don't know what to do with you God". He has so many problems, my Protestant leaders in Church and unwise counselors confused him and didn't really admonish him to repentance. I'd love to help him. He is not bitter at people but at his life. He is sick and sometimes has pain and other symptoms that prevent him from participating in normal life. - Go to work/study/get an education/formation (At least that is what he says. It could also be laziness... idk for sure) He is now 18 years old.

Often when I am bitter or resentful towards someone in my life, I first check to see if it is my own sin I am projecting on to them (this is usually the case) and when I find it difficult to shake the hateful feelings, I make a list in my head of all the blessings I want God to give me, and I pray that God give all those things to the person I am angry with. The demons usually flee shrieking at that point.

Even bitterness at failing to live up to Christ’s standard is sinful, because it is borne of pride, thinking that we are better than what we truly are, which is dust. Disappointment with one’s own sin is pride at work. It is not the same as contrition or compunction. We can only repent and turn to Christ. We fall because we are weak and frail creatures made of dust. But the Lord knows this and He will energize us to keep His commandments.
