Back at it again with another cosplay tips video, this one focusing on dealing with creepy individuals at conventions. Cosplayers all over have dealt with these situations unfortunately. While I do address younger cosplayers a lot in this video, these tips are really useful for all ages!

For non-confrontational people: if someone's making you uncomfortable by touching you, even if it's just innocent light touch, another good way to get out of that is to say "this cosplay was very expensive"/"this cosplay was really hard to make"/"this cosplay is very delicate" + "please don't touch it". Not ruining something expensive is easier to comprehend for many people than not touching someone who just doesn't like it.

As a minor and a cosplayer, I have dealt with some con creeps, and one of my worst stories was from when I was dressed as Raiden. A guy asked me to step on him for a video, and when I said I didn't feel comfortable with it, he asked why not, and I said "I'm 15." The guy looked me straight in the eyes and said "I know." I then asked him how old he was and he said he was 18. Made a disgusted face at him, flipped him off, and called my friends. Moral of the story: guys please do not ask minors to step on you. please.

As a con organizer I would also like to add: if you ever encounter a creep please report it to the staff even if it's "not a big deal", we usually have a pretty good understanding of who the creeps are but we normally don't have a spesific incident to ban them in good faith, even though (at least at smaller cons) we do keep an extra eye on known creeps. I would also like to mention that if you report and get dismissed PLEASE take it higher in the con. Unfortunately some creeps have friends who for some reason don't see them as creep and they might dismiss it as it's their friend.

At my 3rd con, my father and I stopped to the side to take a photo together to send to my mum, my brother was given the phone to take the photo. During the posing part, I started to adjust my outfit and turned to look at a woman aiming her phone at me, she stood there for a moment before turning away. This woman looked middle aged, by the way, so this makes more sense, I was 14, in Kazuha cosplay, pulling up my socks in what could be seen as a suggestive position. I hope that they weren’t taking a photo but still, it really creeped me out

As to calling security.... unfortunately there have been some cons that are poorly run and security doesn't care, thankfully they are not common but be prepared to go to plan B if security stinks. As to Artist Alley... You are absolutely right - as an artist myself who has done numerous cons we all, at least, have the contact number of the one who oversees our area. Another thing about us, the majority of us are more than willing to assist in these kind of situations. Most of us are more than willing to at least let you into our booth to wait for someone you would feel secure with. Getting behind our tables at least will put a physical barrier between you and the creep. But don't just use that - use the time to call for help and/or an escort. For me, I know I would totally go into "Mom" mode if a young cosplayer came to me frightened no matter what gender and harassment is harassment. Thanks Annie for addressing this - you have had some of the most informative videos and I truly appreciate you.

Ironically I've had that happen. One of my friends was cosplaying Yumeko and I was Runa and we both had some random weirdo yell "I've got candy!" At us when we were walking to an icecream place. Both me and my friend are trans men. It was kind of funny, but at the same time scary. I don't think we're the people you're referring to because I don't think my friend ever posted about and I sure didn't but kind of ironic how I've been in pretty much the exact situation.

Okay yeah I'm glad you developed a bit on some aspect of your underaged cosplayers video because I have gone on several rants after seeing the several comments about enjoying and cosplaying mature media. Especially online and in conventions, there WILL be people out there who will see you in a mature cosplay and either try to take advantage of you or make remarks that could be very uncomfortable. This isn't to gatekeep that we're saying be careful of what you cosplay, it's to protect you from falling into these uncomfortable situations which you might not be brave enough to get out of. I was always seen as mature for my age and it made me feel like I was allowed to do suggestive and lewd content as a minor which looking back on I DEEPLY regret it. I WISHED I was able to stand up to those situations that made me feel uncomfortable. I scream realizing the adults around me never told me that maybe what I was doing wasn't okay because I was too naive to know better. It's truly frustrating to see that so many underaged individuals are missing the point entirely of that video

I’ve actually had a friend who was at a convention and someone thought they were another girl who they must’ve REALLY hated and didn’t say anything and straight up walked up to her and punched her and straight up attacked her. Security and the police were called and idk what happened to her but we never saw her for the rest of the convention. The next day my friend came back with a black eye and scratches all over her arms

I just made this comment on your tips for underage cosplayer, but then I hit subscribe and saw you had this video here so I'll put it here too in case it helps someone: Bathrooms can be a great spot to compose yourself and get away from the person creeping on you. Obviously, skip this step and make a scene or find help if needed immediately, but the bathroom can be a great friend to you in a crowded convention center because they usually have the bustle and hustle of people touching up their outfits/makeup and as a result can discourage someone following you. I've actually gotten help from other fellow congoers in the restroom area before who noticed I was uncomfortable and checked to see if the creepy guy I'd walked away from was lingering nearby. You could also discreetly get someone to send a staff/security member in there to you or call the staff on your phone from there. Overall, assuming it's not an extreme situation, they can be a great place to duck in to calm down and get help.

I'm just starting to get into the cosplay scene as woman in my early 20s, this is such good advice!!! One local group to me had a guy with a history of harassing female members (unknown to alot of members until it came to light). He was one of those guys that's always happy to help and doesn't seem like a creep at all, but was actually dangerous. Had a guy come up to me once and very dramatically ask if I would be his "con girlfriend". I said no and he just went "okay, no problem" and walked away, all smiles still. It was alarming in the moment, but is honestly such a funny memory in hindsight. I wish all con creeps would respect a no as easily as that guy lol.

Some things to add to the list Most major conventions have photo opportunity areas where people can take your picture and are usually well marked and often have a set of rules in place in plain site. Smaller conventions generally don’t have these areas setup and photo opportunities happen in many different areas and this is where problems can arise. Find out if your convention has a cosplay photo op area or not because it might make you adjust what you might do then. There is an unwritten rule that if you get your picture taken with a cosplayer you are not to hold, hug or touch them without their permission and people who are knowledgeable will often speak up if a person crosses the line with a cosplayer. If a cosplayer allows you to touch them keep it clean, keep distance between you and the other person and any time that you feel the line might be or has been crossed speak up don’t stay quiet. As a general rule I make sure my hands are plainly visible at all times and I keep them at shoulder height if I am standing with a cosplayer that allows me to touch them, anywhere else in my rule book is unacceptable for me to touch. Never let someone who wants to take your photograph take you to a quiet area or another room this is a big red flag If you choose to let people take photos of you set the ground rules of what you will or will not do Any time you are at a convention it is always a good idea to see if you can get contact numbers for event security or find out where to find event security is stationed so you know where to go if you feel uncomfortable or threatened. As Annie stated it is always best to be present with one or more people that you feel safe with Most conventions are safe and fun but it never hurts to be prepared

As someone who has gone to 30+ cons i can safely say that creeps going that far is pretty rare, you were just very unlucky to get that experience from your first con. ive only been to one con, and was with my family all the time there. and theres one thing in our safety plan that i feel like is overlooked in tip videos like these, because you usually are safe in a group: come up with a rendezvous spot in case you do get split up somehow. if you find that you lost someone in your group, or lost your group entirely, and cant contact them with a phone or some shit, then youd meet up at the given location. a good spot is the event entrance or your car. you will more often than not know where those are, and they're pretty safe locations.

Once again I'm really glad you elaborated on the "underage cosplaying tips" and "cosplay tips/con guides" you give in almost every other video. My biggest advice is never go in an area without having a way out, and if an area has little traffic, just avoid it altogether. Most con goers have a keen eye for spotting people in trouble or that is getting in bad situations (I developed my sense from working daycare, so any minor that's not attached to a parent has my eye on them like a dog watches a bone). Most offenders are known pretty fast and are typically escorted right out of the premises. I was lucky enough never to have gone in a situation that required help, but doesn't mean it's bad to have a way out wherever I go

I've went to a few Cons and I'm not a cosplayer. Funny thing is, Cosplayers make me feel uncomfortable. They get really into their character and have touched me thinking it's ok. I laughed it off and played along, but I'd prefer not to be targeted by cosplayers to mess with me when I'm trying to enjoy the con. Maybe I'm just a magnet to cosplayers, I dunno. When I see cosplayers in cool costumes, I enjoy from a distance with little communication unless they approach me. I don't understand how ppl creep on cosplayers, that's just really weird.
@AnnieChieDesigns

Oh gosh I am so sorry you had an experience like that. I can hopefully offer you comfort that the majority of cosplayers aren't like that, but doesn't dismiss that the cosplayers that did that to you shouldn't be doing that. Cosplay is not consent works both ways- being in costume does not permit people to mistreat them, but it also doesn't give them permission to mistreat others.

Fully agree. I cosplayed Akane Owari from SDR2 as my first ever cosplay(TLDR, opened shirt to reveal cleavage and a mini skirt, all you need to know) when I was 15, only cus it was a cheap and easy cosplay to put together. I went to a con alone and someone saw me and they were friendly and we kinda just walked around and talked! I was very starved for friends then(plus it was my first con ever) so I was happy! Then suddenly he asked me to follow him so I did and he lead me to sneak into a bathroom??? Like, I don't know WHAT he wanted(i forgot but he looked aorund 17 or 18 maybe) but it was getting to the point not even my introverted ass could sit and watch so I just said I'm gonna brb and left and went to hide in a small room dedicated for members of cosplay masqurade. Luckily it was the first and last time I had a bad encounter, most people are really nice - but remember, state your boundaries!!! It's hard as a shy introvert, I know, but some people don't know boundaries and stuff!!! Some genuienly don't have bad intentions, but maybe are just super extroverted and don't know how differently introverts could respond and stuff. Just keep yourself safe!

Once at a con i was just sitting in a corner of the karaoke room to recharge my social batteries with some of my friends sitting a few feet away. The man sitting in front of me kept turning around and looking at me, and a few of the times he looked like he was looking at my thighs (i have pretty thick thighs and i was wearing shorts). Then suddenly he turned around again and asked me what my name was. I said it was finley and he told me his name was joakim. He turned around another time a while later and said something about the karaoke conversationally and i just nodded. He kept asking more and more creepy questions like where i lived, how old i was, etc. in the end i just told my friends and left the room with them and we hid in the crowd for the majority of the con. (keep in mind that joakim was in his 20s-30s judging from his appearance. i was 14 and there was no way he could've thought i was any older because i'm relatively short and look kind of young for my age in general.)

This is quite helpful because I was supposed to go to a convention tomorrow, but my mom recently just got into the hospital because her back started hurting due to pregnancy, and she was supposed to come with me. I’m going to be taken there with my dad, but I’m not sure if my mom bought the tickets for guardian access (the tickets got sold out recently). I’m 14, and I’m super super paranoid about this stuff. Especially when most of the people I’m going to be around are adults. I’m just trying to find out what to do because this is going to be potentially my very first time going alone in a convention if my dad isn’t allowed to come with me :,)

Cosplayers should also try to stay within a degree of reality and not get overly fixated on their characters and assume that everyone at the CON shares in their mental fantasies. Stay your distance,hang with your group and don't obstruct the paths for those their to enjoy the event. It's usually the semi-clad cosplayers who are the most self-absorbed and obnoxious. I am an underage cosplayer and last year my younger sister and I got harassed at a ren faire by multiple older men in their 50's who had toddlers and/or younger children with them. All of this happened after my guardians siblings, and I decided to split into groups of 4. We all agreed to meet up in a set location at a set time. As I was the oldest of my group of 4, I was in charge. During the time I was with my siblings I heard many remarks about my chest and lots of people stared at it and didn't even bother to look me in the eyes. I wasn't in cosplay that day or wearing anything ridiculously revealing either. I was just wearing boots , black leggings, and a shirt with flowy sleeves and open shoulders. My sister was wearing something similar but thankfully she got much less of those uncomfortable remarks than I did. The remarks didn't stop once the groups came back together either, but they were less frequent. I go to that specific Ren Faire every year and have been going since I was a little kid, but I'm more than a little scared to go this year because of my experiences from last year. Although when I do go, I've decided that I'm going to wear armor and a helmet to cover as much of myself as I possibly can. Simply so nobody will assume my age or my gender and try to touch or harass me. I also intend to make use of whatever tips from this video that I can apply.

I think this is awesome i will mention most of the cons will have a police officer around atleast in the larger cities. Im speaking from my experience in canada so it might be different but ya its not a burden if you call as long as theres a legitimate problem they are usually happy to assist you. This also goes for larger sports or other events as well beyond cons. Oh also appreciated the talk to a staff or security member this can even help with some larger conflicts that arent just creepy people being creepy. Like theft and other problems.

also most cosplayers have a keen eye for anyone in trouble, when i personally see some who looks uncomfortable taking a photo or talking to someone i usually stick a little close by just to see if that interaction will end and they will be ok

I have a question for AnnieChi Hi so I'm an under age cosplayer and I was wondering can you still bring a self defense weapon thing or one of those loud self help buzzers? And thank you for the advice ☺️(Edit: I you don't get what I'm saying just look up self defense key chain)
@AnnieChieDesigns
@AnnieChieDesigns Жыл бұрын
The buzzers you totally could yes. I would advise against anything that could be considered an actual weapon even the key chain ones. If it is questionable if it would be allowed, it probably wouldn't be.

I’m a new, underage, cosplayer. And I saw the rant about underage people cosplaying mature media in the comment section. I really really really want to cosplay Chiaki Nanami. Should I not cosplay a danganronpa character for my own safety? I’m going to PAX WEST and I’m going to be supervised by my dad, uncle, and i’ll be with my close friend so should I be concerned of being creeped upon?
@AnnieChieDesigns
@AnnieChieDesigns 11 ай бұрын
Honestly this could be a great conversation to have with the relatives who will be supervising you. See what they think. Do they think maybe the character's media is too mature for your age? Are they worried that you being this character may attract attention from the wrong age group? All things to consider! Usually being with adults will prevent the creeps, but always good to be thinking about what to do if someone does act creepy towards you with your group.

@@AnnieChieDesignsMy dad and Uncle are completely fine with me cosplaying a character from a mature game, especially since Chiaki is covered up. But I have another, stronger worry, people asking for photos. I’m a bit hesitant about having my photo being put up on the internet. Especially since my sister will most likely be in that photo and I have a feeling people will be arguing in Reddit or something about why she shouldn’t be playing Danganronpa. Even though she hasn’t, she’s only gotten a basic rundown of the game and wanted to cosplay with me. Right, I forgot to mention, My younger underage sister will be cosplaying Monokuma with me and I’ve seen how heated and strong the opinions can be about whether or not a child should even have knowledge of Danganronpa. Which has caused me to stress for a while trying to think about good excuses and ways to politely decline photos without making the person asking feel let down. What are some of the best things to say when declining a photo?

As a teenager who's been to a few amount of conventions, since the first one i've just desided not to take photos whit people outside of cosplays, not (as mentioned in the video, this does sorta go aiganst it tho) that all cosplayers are good people, butdoing that because i had an unclomterbale situation whit two guys where one had asked for a photo whit me and my friend, then the other takes one right after, and we were quite clearly minors (also going as charekters our age). I've never had any adults in cosplay ask for a photo, not even sure if i'd say yes. I'm in all honestly just scared of situations as the ones mentioned in the video, luckly i'm lucky enought to be a part of a group of roughtly 70-100 youth cosplayers, and on top of that have amazing friends who does cosplay outside of that, so it hopefully won't even happen to me nor them

I never been to a con (I only became a gamer last year but prior to that I was friends with a lot of gamers and anime stans) and I already been harassed both online and in person by numerous other gamers and anime stans. I have even been told by someone i know that i deserved to get harassed all because i don't like the game Super Smash Bros. I'm sorry to anyone who loves that game (and is reading my comment) but to me the game got boring. I stopped playing it. I have also been told by the same person that because i don't have a lot of games + don't have a certain amount of hours on a game that + don't rage over games (I'm sorry gamers but i don't understand ragging over a game at all) it means I'm not committed to being a gamer at all.

had a male cosplayer (almost 30) keep repeatedly touching me and insist on touching my feet at one con in 2021. my best friend at the time insisted this was fine and he was just being overly friendly and was also autistic (we all were). the guy got exposed for sexual harassment a few months later and that ex friend was also sexually harassing me, just not with my physical body. safe to say i abandoned both but the best friend is so popular in their community with me being so unpopular that chances of me actually successfully getting them called out as an abuser are slim to none lmao.
