Beginning improvver here! Denial is a thing. I'm just getting to the point where I actually NOTICE I'm doing it so things are improving and learning to agree whole-heartedly with a statement like "You killed all the puppies!" IS difficult. "No, I didn't... er. um. I only killed 5 of them" haha.

Yes, and ideally we should be setting each other up in improv to not have feel uncomfortable with a choice that you have to "Yes And". It can be hard in the moment, but think how you can take part of that idea and make it not so dark or uncomfortable (no one in the audience wants to see a scene about dead puppies). So a reaction like, "Relax...relax...I just did meditative yoga with them all, so they are in a deep, restful sleep." And hopefully your scene partner will not be stuck to their idea!

At lot of those more dark, weird choices generally come from uncomfortable nerves that will start to subside when beginners become for comfortable with the stage.
