After spraining my calf at last weekends Cross country, I share how I deal with niggles to prevent a longer term injury. Despite not being able to run at all this week, I've been using the elliptical in the gym to maintain fitness and after 5 days of sweating it out I'm finally ready to make the return to running. Hope you take away a few tips to apply to your own running and if you enjoyed the video please leave a like and consider subscribing for more running related content.

Glad to see you’re getting back into it! I had a glute strain that I didn’t realise I had because every time I would warm up and never feel it after the warm up until i realised during one session of 200 repeats that I was really quite badly injured. Then due to school pressure to participate and the poor management of warm ups in schools as a general thing, it took almost 2 months for me to recover. Can’t wait to leave school in a few months and not have this issue if I get injured in the future. Getting back into it really well currently though, using all your tips to progress training really helps. Finally going back to the track for the first time on Monday even though I probably won’t be able to keep up but fingers crossed.🤞

Awesome video! Picked up a niggle a few months ago and tried to push through it. It obviously got worse and I’m still recovering atm! Wish I had this video to watch back then! Been loving the content lately, thank you! 🙌💪

Glad to see that you have patience as one of your steps. Pushing it too much in the beginning can make things even worse and I'm happy you've identified that. Well done on your Essex placement!

Good to see the injury has healed. Sounds like you caught it just in time and did the sensible thing. We often try to just push through injuries and often end up worse off.

Great video as always Ben. Wish you a speedy recovery. Funny story, this is how I discovered and felt in love with triathlon. A year or so ago I was (run) injured and did some swimming and cycling as cross training. Felt in love with the sports. Now my run mileage is way lower then before but I am a lot fitter, like you mentioned, I do all my easy aerobic sessions on the bike or swim, plus a few key sessions for those sports. My running sessions are basically a track workout every Tuesday, a brick (bike+run) session on Friday and a long run on Sunday. I don’t think you have felt in love with the elliptical but that was very relatable. Cheers Ben

I’m sorry to hear about the calf but happy you’re well in the mend! I really like this type of content. I’d be happy to hear more in this topic, as this always feel like the largest risk to my programming.

thanks ben, just did an easy 3k after a couple weeks off from shin splints. Used cycling to keep the aerobic progress and now to ease myself back into impact sports. Congrats on the Essex call-up!!

Really good point about accepting the injury, I think sometimes it's easier to just try and keep running in the hopes it will sort itself out.

Had a little pain in the shins for few weeks, maybe because of working in construction and doing the running part little too hard, but definitely gonna use your tips in the future. Glad you're better and keep up with the great work 👊

I just injured my calf on Monday, shame I couldn't watch this video then as I did an easy run on Wednesday and it's now feeling worse! I'm going to the gym tonight so I'll try the elliptical trainer. Thanks for the advice! Hope you can get back to running properly now.

Shame about the injury, hope you're fully healed up soon. Currently nursing shin splints in my left knee, as did a fair bit of hill running in Wales over the holidays, and I think the downhills took their toll. Glad I saw this video, as it's made me realise the elliptical trainer could be a viable alternative in the meantime, as I cannot really afford to fully take time off cause I'll be running the Manchester Marathon in 12 weeks. Thanks for the inspiration Ben.

Nice one, Ben! Great tips too. I took 6 weeks off following a calf strain. I basically spent a lot of time in the gym building up lower (and upper) body strength before getting back out there again. I lost a lot of fitness but regained it and more soon after a bit of patience. I felt the niggle in the calf for a while after yet seemed to disappear after warming up in a run. Now I stretch them properly after each run and it has even helped rid of a long-term plantar fascitis issue.

Hey, I got the exact same injury from my race last Saturday. I was fine until about 5 miles in (10.5 mile race). It only seemed to hurt when I was going uphill. I still went on to finish and luckily won the race but been on rest ever since. I wish I’d seen this blog before and I would’ve done the elliptical machine and see if I could’ve done that also. Definitely affects your mental health when you can’t do something you love and it gets you away from daily life and stresses. Glad you seem better buddy.

I’m feeling with you, Ben. I have had a really solid 2021 in terms of staying injury free, which have let me to aim for Berlin Half Marathon in April. However, I’m suffering from runner’s knee. It is a major set-back mentally and physically. Keep pushing, champ. Running is a injury prone sport unfortunately. Seeing you motivated for cross training is helping me do the same as well. Cheers mate!
