Dealing with Scammers in Manila

I was staying in Ermita, Manila and was going to Robinsons Manila when a Trike pulled up beside me. He said it was 50 Pesos to go there so I rode his tricycle. When we arrived he said it's 550 Pesos! Scammer pala siya! We had a confrontation over it. Here's how it was handled. Sa sunod pupunta na lang ako sa Pulis

why did you pay him more than what was agreed upon (50pesos)? by giving him more, you encourage more scammers and you raise the asking price for everyone else. you are one of the reason why scammer proliferate. scammers multiply and increase their prices because of people giving them more. creating a chain reaction in a block. like blockpink. satoshi does not like this. if it is true that they captured the said guy, they did it only because you are caucasian with many followers. but it won't happen if your subs are below 1000 followers. they probabl;y base their decision by checking the social media presence of the complainant. this has been going on for decades. the culprit are usually foreigners giving more that what should be given raising the price and fueling the scammers like throwing gasoline into the fire. i like the 2 foreigners who refuse to give more to the scammers (another youtuber), they remain steadfast, refusing to budge, knowing full well that giving in to the scammer by an inch will be detrimental to the next target potential victim.

These scumbags needs a lesson and should be reported to the nearest police station or barangay. Poverty is not an excuse to do bad things like this. It makes my blood boil to see my own countrymen behave like this, such a disappointment. Anyways I was thinking what if this happened to a female foreigner who can’t argue with them? scam is considered a job in manila. when i complained to the police, the police got mad at me and just told me to give something to the street scammers. since i am not a white foreigner or/and i do not have more than 100 subscribers, they wont help me. if you are white foreigner and/or with suibscribers more than 10,000 then you can to manila. just show how many followers you have, if you have many, they will help you, if you have more than a million, they will fear you. even if you are an assbutas like a politician senator, the police/enforcer/mmda will answer to you with yes opo sir madam and then bow and repetedly say opo opo opo yes po opo continously ...

You should NOT negotiate with these low-lifes. You should have called the police (or threaten to call the police) to lock up these scammers and teach them a lesson. I flagged a taxi once in Manila to just take me to the nearby shopping mall, about a 2 blocks away only (to avoid the sun and muddy road). I told him not to bring down his meter anymore and he agreed. After the short ride, I handed him 50 pesos and that was it.

That's a fallacy of ignoring probability. It's like saying "you can still die while skydiving with or without a parachute, so it makes no difference". Life isn't black and white and it's not smart to give up on influencing odds in your favor just because 100% doesn't exist. While random filipinos do still try to scam me (and this will never end here, nor will it ever end anywhere else on Earth), I have noticed a steep drop in scam attempts coinciding exactly with my knowledge and usage of Tagalog.

Not always the case, I can still remember that one time I was travelling to a province, a certain local was trying to scam me with paying him 300 pesos, when in fact, the destination would only cost me 10 pesos, just a bit of walking away from the airport to the main road. He just dont know that it wasn't my first time, I just needed some direction to get to the main road and eventually ride the public transport at that time.

There are really many scammers in Manila. I was a victim … the driver even followed me to my hotel. He would not leave until I give him all my money. The front desk people just laughed. I hid in the bathroom and pretended to call the police. He finally left! That was one of the scariest times in my life. This happened a few years ago though

I lived here long enough to know the prices of everything. It happens too many times. Yes a shame but happens to much without the chance of redress in 90% of the cases as the foreigner just pays. He was stupid letting the trike stop to take on additional fares, it's his ride. Rizal is notorious for scamming taxi, trike and horse drawn carriages, even if it's a no meter sir, agreed fee, it's still a scam. I've lived here 7 years in Makati and still have taxi drivers try it on, I tell them STOP, get out, before I do I explain the reason why I have loads of money $$$ is I'm not stupid enough to be scammed, lay it on really thick, call him a c¥nt and leave his car door open. 95% of taxi drivers do a great job and I always give a 30% tip for a no fuss ride.

Even locals, like a Filipino from the province, may also fall victim to scams here in Manila. That's why if there is a jeep, e-jeep, bus, or UV that will take you near your destination, it's better to choose that option instead of a trike. You're definitely being scammed by these people.

I disagree as a foreigner living here in Makati for 7 years. The solution you gave is a typical filipino response to a problem, say nothing and move on. The Rizal and Intramorus areas are known for taxi, trike and horse drawn carriages scams. The police should monitor the situation and it should be easier to report these scammers. 95% of taxi's are good guys, even the ones who say no meter Sir, 200php which is kind of a scam but OK if you agree the price. Nothing will ever improve when society just shrugs its shoulders and say oh well, that's just how it is, he he.

Damm, I regularly stay in Ermita when in Manila for vacation, but usually stay right across the street from Robinson's mall so I've never taken a trike. But I do always confirm the price before getting into a trike and usually give a little more than the agreed upon fare. Im shocked that you actually paid them 250 pesos. You should have just walked away after giving them 100 pesos. By giving them more you continue to encourage their scam because they did get 5-times the agreed upon fare. Plus, you should have put them on this video, clear face, and let all of your subscribers know exactly who they are. That would have been a better deterrent.

PH Pres Marcos, Mayor Lacuna and Chief of Police should solve the problem of these petty crimes like scammers, snatchers, holdapers. and drugs. Govt Official should start implementing zero crimes by 24 hrs police foot patrol, once a week saturation drive in all the squatter areas. Also PH is a 3rd world very poor very populated country and I hope the Govt should find jobs for the poor people so they wont think of doing crimes. Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Taiwan are very ahead of the PH in terms of economy,infrastracture,health care and peace and order. We want a BETTER PH not a shameful PH.

What if you just put the 50 pesos down and took refuge at one of the establishments or mentioned the word "police"? I know it's easier said than done, but just a thought. So sorry about your experience. Sometimes even locals get that bad treatment, too!

As a solo traveller, I could say that it's not only in PH. I experienced scammers in Vietnam and Thailand (Some were successful and some are not). Even here in PH. Most of then are in the form of transportation (Tricycle, taxi, tuktuk). Good thing I am not Caucasian or pretty sure I will be more targetted by them. My rule now is, if someone apparoaches me for their services, I dont trust it. It should be me looking for their services or be the one to approach them.

I had similar stuff in Bacalod because my dad is white, but my mam is Filipino from Bacolod, before I was born my Tita would go ask taxi drivers for a ride and then call my dad out so they would already have a deal on price so he couldn't be scammed, now my Tita has passed on my mam doesn't hold back, it's funny but sad at the same time

Im sure he appreciates the Philippines and our hospitality (the good) enough to be here and take the bad… much like Filipinos accepts the good from living in Australia, the Middle East, etc where we’re not even treated as equals. I know we should look at the other side of the coin instead of just blaming these scammers, the government should do something about it. This wouldn't happen if they don't have any reason to do so . I'm from Zamboanga del sur. Nagwork din po ako sa Manila at hindi po ako sumasakay kapag pinipilit ako. I ride jeep instead. You can report them to the nearest Police Station. Huwag ka din pong makipag-usap sa mga pulis na naka duty sa street. Mas favor yan sila sa mga scammer like they don't really care kasi may tip din ang iba.

A good thing also to remember when in the Philippines is when you get ripped of or need help from a Pinoy with something like this often you will NOT get the help you are expecting because...you have to remember that the scammer and the person you are seeking help from are often from the same location and you may leave but the 'helper' may face repercussions from the person that you needed help from in the future once you have left :(:( So just remember that you may not get the result you expect if you ask for help the person may not be too thrilled in helping a foreigner against another Pinoy :) By the way Dwaine hello from Logan City Queensland :):):)
