Dude, you hit the nail on the head. Sometimes social progress interferes with personal progress. That has been the major definition of my life lately. I chose to seclude myself so that I could undo many of my awful habits and people just don't understand. The choice to hangout in moderation has improved my life and emphasized the value of my time and how I spend it. Also in that personal development I found your videos. Which have been amazing to watch.

It does seem so. This "social progress" often emphasizes things quite the opposite of personal progress. Instead of growing in compassion, we're told to "look out for number one". Instead of developing resilience, we're told to just buy things or take pills to make us feel better. Instead of cultivating health, we are told to eat junk and get a prescription when our bodies begin to fall apart. I hope that collectively, we're beginning to see the importance of fostering both individual resilience, and a strong sense of community. Thanks so much for being part of this channel! =) Kenton

Heck yes brother! The connection to self and the connection to others are fascinating and important relationships to mind. We have to make sure we cultivate the right things in both of them. Thank you for making this channel. I hope you feel the encouragement we are all wanting to send your way.

Hmm, i feel more like a hermitic druid … and seeing wolfs are generally pack animals, a 'lone wolf' may well be a contraction in itself. Though i guess there is a period in which young males find a family and thus pack for themselves, and when a older wolf is chased off from his pack by another they may well be lone for some time... Also the BS about Marxism clearly shows the effect of years of brainwashing from the Capitalistic Elites, Former Aristocracy and Slave owners of this world. Both are extremes that sell people lies for power. Socialistic Democracy, aka. a middle road, is probably the best of all evils...

As Victor says in another comment, that "band of brothers" ideal has largely been lost. We might band together virtually to battle aliens on a co-op game, but seldom do young men get a chance to hoist packs and venture into the wilderness, to test their courage, their skills, their strength and creativity against real-world stresses and dangers. The military gives that sense of tribe, of depending on each other during duress, but right now I believe that less than 1% of the population enters the military. So this does indeed seem to be missing . . . =) Kenton

I have been close to many different groups in my life, but always felt on the fringe, not truly a member. I have very few people I consider close friends. Luckily, I enjoy my own company, but there are plenty of times I feel lonely and wonder just why people don't seem to like me much.
@ReWildUniversity
@ReWildUniversity 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. That's much what we're speaking of here. That feeling of being either totally on the outside, or even just marginally on the outside. It can have a profound effect on some people. Being able to enjoy your own company, however, gives you a great bonus -- you're not then totally dependent on the opinions/acceptance of others. =) Kenton

I'm content being alone, more so than being surrounded by others. I work alone, and usually spend time outdoors alone. It takes awhile before I need some social interaction, but I definitely crave it from time to time. This behavior was formed growing up out in the woods alone, because everyone else wanted to watch movies or play video games. I once had a friend that liked going out on adventures with me, and I was surprised how I enjoyed having company since I was used to being alone when out in the woods. Social media does provide a shallow and minimal interaction, but I don't think it can provide the proper level of exchange....like you said, on the internet everything is great, everything is perfect, but it is an outlet to share experiences (with limitations, because only what you want them to see is shared). Awesome video and discussion Mowgli, keep up the good work!

The requirement for banishment/social exclusion before was much stricter than it is today. Before you had to actually endanger the tribe or show lack of loyalty or something along those lines. But as long as you were on their side they were on your side. Today the only requirement is to hold a differing opinion on an emotional issue since you can live perfectly fine as long as you have money. I have always played Devil's advocate for pretty much every issue just to understand the world and people. At this point I don't even want to be socially included into any groups. That would only limit my life experience. Especially considering every time I have tried to become part of a group I immediately become disinterested and bored. Would rather feel a little lonely than bored and fake. The only good tribalism is based on family and friends, not views and opinions. People can change their opinions over night, can't change the group you were born into. In an ideal world the only things people are emotionally attached to are their close friends and relatives.

In an ideal world people are emotionally attached to every living thing and the world at large, with a particular personal focus on their close friends and relatives. Why exclude the rest of the world from your tribe, it seems in contradiction to your opening statement?

Dutch, we are still biological and therefore we are far more reliant on plants, animals, bacteria(even non living stuff) and the rest for our ecology just to survive. We should care if our forests burn down or all the animals are killed. In that sense yes. I'm talking about emotional attachment as in seeing commercials of starving children on TV to suck money out of you to give them food so they over populate their countries. Or someone calling your favourite movie or sports team stupid or something. No one should be emotionally attached to things that would have little to no effect on the world if they disappeared. People are so worried about topics like abortion, weed, gay marriage. But will any of those things actually cause harm to you or your tribe? If not, why get emotional about it?

I found myself in a tribe of narcissists. And when I tried to distance myself, there was quite an unfortunate uproar. One of these was my next door neighbor. Whom I don't speak to anymore. I feel so awkward whenever I see her, because we have so much in common, yet because I won't be a sheep and follow her every whim... Well let's just say, it's better that she's not in my tribe. ... One of my other friends enjoys having a pity party everytime we speak. She seems to think that if I ask how she is or how things are going that it's time for her to dump all her problems. When I leave, I feel as if a dump truck dumped a load onto me. Every time we spoke... It got old after five years. Another friend started losing patience with me, yelling and showing me a lot of anger/meanness, which no one deserves. After bringing it to his attention time after time, I had to ask him not to come around anymore. There are more, but now that I've been away from them for over a year now, I've discovered that I really hate being around negative emotions like anger, frustration and manipulation. And the older I get the less I am willing to tolerate abusive behavior. ❤🌅🌵

ReWildUniversity, I think the reason everyone had such a temper tantrum was because they were surprised that I could live without them. After they realized that I had stopped accepting so many invitations, they started threatening to cut off all ties with me, which was funny because in my mind, I had left those relationships months ago. But I learned something... Somehow they confused courtesy for weakness. For example, if I was invited for tea, I would let the hostess choose the flavor as I really wasn't coming for the tea, it was the social aspect. But somehow she took that as being indecisive. In new relationships I will have to choose more. I realize that by choosing, the other person gets to know me better. 😉💝☀🌵

I consider myself lucky to be an introvert, often introverts are pitied, but in todays divided society it's been a godsend, I do not fear my opinions offending others, I do not fear my personality offending others, I am who I am, and I don't care if someone does not want to be my friend because of it. My only fear is today society is getting so divided it's coming to a point where things are becoming violent, people are being censored, or services denied to them based on their identity exclusively. This does worry me as it would force me to change who I am just to gain access to my human rights.

Your suggestion to volunteer is a good one. People are always happy to get free workers and will be happy to see you when you show up to volunteer (pretty much guaranteed! If not, find another charity.) By choosing a charity that you have interest, you will meet others with the same interests. And you will be helping someone. So unlike meeting people in a nightclub, you have three positives before you even walk in the door! ... Another place to look for healthy friends might be special interest clubs or guilds or even church, like quilting guilds or camping clubs or bird watching societies that count migrations. We don't hear much about them, but do a search and you'll find all kinds of like minded people getting together in real life to share an interest and skills. ❤🌅🌵

I got quite some experience with social exclusion during pre-school and high school, basically living two lives in a sense, the home life where i had a tribe and a group of friends, and the school life where i was basically an outcast. In my current life i think most people would classify me as somewhat of a hermit, mainly because i have very few friends left. Thing is, i'm ok with that, i have been so used to 'being on the outside (of social groups or society) looking in' that i'm not sure i actually want these 'obligations to belonging' to a group anymore. Now i will say that i went through this soul searching and finding my true self to become truly comfortable with it, and i do not shun people nor social interaction. It's just that i find so many things interesting and seen for myself how 'groups validate themselves not by what all the individuals share, but what they can all accept to reject', that i just don't want to be a part of that process. I much rather share with an individual what i have in common, then be a part of a group based on what i might reject; which i guess is mostly groups and groupthink, so hmmm, contradiction interminus there i guess. Simply because i found that as an individual there isn't really something i reject (my main values are freedom and respect, for every living thing (unless they act disrespectful in which case my respect for said individual is lowered, sometimes to a point of simply ignoring their existence, but always with the notion that they can also increase in respect by doing things that warrant respect), and the only thing i find myself truly rejecting is groups 'that reject others based upon some (generally pre-conceived) nonsense'. I might still respect individuals in said group to a certain extend, simply because the only thing that lowers my respect for them is this rejection of others based upon something i find complete non-sense, while on the other hand they also do things that warrant respect. But obviously as a group they are opposite to my main values, even though some groups 'pretend to share these values' (yeah, only when it comes to those within their group). So, i find great value in social media, or 'the internet'. As i can be a part of many different groups based upon the account i am on... Here i can be a survivalist/bush-crafter, while on another account i might be an avid gamer, or engage in high level scientific discussion, yet on another I might talk sports, or say merely fishing without the context of survival. You name it... and the great thing is that due to the focus of many of these 'groups' on a specific topic, it's generally focussed on the topic that's shared, not the thing they all agree on to reject. And due to having found a basis for my being, i can pretty much be the same person on all of them. And even within these groups i find people that align with my thinking and being, and those that are opposed to it, great thing is that seeing it's not in person you don't get the awkwardness of conflict that comes along with opposition of thought. And as long as you stick to your own convictions of interaction (for me respect), you find out soon enough whom you can agree to disagree with and have interesting discussion, and those that are just disrespectful regardless, and you are best to just ignore. And i know this is a bit opposite to what you advocate in the video, but i wrote it down because it's clearly another option. Yes it's great to find a place to belong, but it doesn't have to be 'one group', nor 'in person'. It can be many, on the internet... Though the thing i do agree with, is that finding your true self is probably a pre-requisite for that choice too. Because with it, i don't feel lonely, i feel a part of the world and acknowledge the freedom and respect the existence of every living being, i share this planet and life in general with them and they are all around me, so how can i be lonely.

Such good things to remember here -- first, we appreciated the reminder that often groups are just as much about what they reject as about what they promote -- which is part of what can make many groups damaging in the sense of making us into "followers". Secondly, we love that your reminded us about the benefits of social media. The way you are using it seems very conscious. For instance, your comments here are always thoughtful, adding great value to these videos and the discussion. You truly seem to be using this tool wisely. =) Kenton and Rebecca

Well it takes quite some time to write a good comment and the will to be constructive and positive, and even that doesn't always come together. Actually deleted various bits and rewrote some stuff to get to the post that i found contributed the most to the topic and to people reading it (seeing as i am but a mere human myself). It's another thing i like about media like this, i can walk away without hitting [post] and rethink what i wrote, heck, i could just copy past this in some word thing and continue on it tomorrow (as this video will still be there to respond to), because maybe i am tired and grumpy now, or something has me really worked up because i'm really emotionally invested in it or maybe my blood-sugar is just low or i'm stressed out due to w/e. As it's so easy for your general mental constitution to translate into how you respond, on here you have all the time in the world, IRL maybe not so much (though i do try to be aware of it) ... So yeah, i do use this very consciously :) , not just in regards to my accounts topic wise, but also in regards to my privacy and the way i respond. Though one main thing never to forget in relation to it, it's that the written word is the least concise way to communicate, as it leaves room for interpretation from both the writer as the reader.

Team work is a collective ideology that works to make individual survival easier. But being alone is an important step to realise that which people call altruism. Friend are usual a part of a team which only respects you when you leave them. Friendships have a half life of 10 years, real connections are not friendships and last forever. The tribe is not so important when they consist of people less mature. Which makes growth and experience the true meaning of life. The moon dictates how much we need others or the importance of a team. It comes like a tide. Happy are those who require just to breath

One amazing way that I have found to increase my positive social interactions, help others, and make friends is being a Couchsurfing host. Couchsurfing is an awesome website/app that connects travelers with local people who are willing to host them. It is a great way for travelers to get good advice on what to see from locals, and its a great excuse for locals to go on adventures and make new friends. It might seem a bit scary to invite a stranger into your house, but between the review system which works excellently and the type of people who use the site I have never had less than a stellar experience.

Amazing video, I really like the way you guys are talking about potentially difficult subjects. I myself have been struggling a lot with this lately. I'm (luckily) quite content with solitude, but lately I've ended up isolating myself a lot because the people I physically interact with on a daily basis simply don't seem to be, as you say, "the right tribe" for me right now. I don't know if it's anything you (or anyone else) have an idea how to work on, but my biggest issue atm. is simply nihilism. You speak of "finding value" and figuring out what's important in your life and which values to live by etc. but finding any such value is increasingly difficult. Perhaps it's because of feeling excluded from society (not that that's anyone's fault), or maybe it's something else, I don't know, but perhaps someone here has experienced something similar or is experiencing something similar right now, and can maybe share some advice or ideas :) Thanks again, please keep up the amazing videos!
@collinblazer6427
@collinblazer6427 6 жыл бұрын
I really see myself in this comment, as I too have recently started becoming much more comfortable with isolation than I have been in the past. Nihilism is really hard, for me just because it's so easy and comfortable. I have found that practicing empathy and gratitude in small ways is very helpful to resist the hopelessness and nihilism. For example, I always try to think of a few things I'm grateful for before I eat or drink, and I know that it's hard for me to feel empathy for other humans, but I can always practice empathizing with animals, insects, trees, anything in nature. For finding value, I have had to work hard to cut the addictions and habits out of my life so I can do what I care about instead. Video games, youtube binges, and boredom eating are the biggest ones for me. I've found that the more you can escape those addictions and habits, the more you will naturally want to spend time doing what you love. I hope this helps you =)

Well, my views were pretty nihilistic, and to some people they might still feel this way even though in essence they are not … i value 'Freedom and Respect' most (and strive for knowledge; my most valuable possession are fond memories of loved ones), and from that i found that i have had to adjust a lot of my thinking and attitude (still struggle at times, so work in progress) towards others and sometimes even myself (mostly work out kneejerk conditioned responses to preconceived notions and complete BS). Nihilism may actually be a great basis, as it gives the ultimate freedom, as there is nothing that's a reason to restrict you. And while nihilism may seem disrespectful, excluding respect is restricting your freedom, now you may not care about respect due to nihilism, but then, *why care to not care. It's all the same* … your choice basically. And that's what's meant in finding your values or what's important in your life, it's your choice of what you find worthy to care for. (f/e in a means to find out which items i cared for most, i imagined my house to burn down, and then gave myself the opportunity to risk my life to get something out of blazing inferno; I found that the things i was willing to risk my life for were things i had an emotional attachment to, why? because they unlocked memories of loved ones that have passed away. So what did i truly value? … consequence, i value my memories, and have become even more nihilistic towards material possessions. In regards to other values i choose to go for respect, mainly because i'dd like others to also treat me with some respect. But then why exclude other beings? Why would a snail or ant's life be less valuable than a dog's or a human or w/e (except maybe musquito's and blackflies and the like ~ though in a sense a work in progress); so that statement may seem pretty nihilistic to humans that think their life is worth more than that of an ant, but is it really? If you are viewing it from the surface of the moon, you can but only make out our existence by the anthill like structures shown by lights at night. Specs of dust, without any real value in the big picture of the universe, but a reason to respect them less? Or to deny them freedom? To treat them mean or from a position of egoistic power, do note, you are but the same spec of dust, from the moon smaller than the bacteria on your mouse (though do clean it at times!). And i take it you want freedom, the freedom to do w/e, so if you do, then this means you likely want the same for others, heck from a nihilistic pov. why even care about what other people want. Where it becomes harder is when they want say something religious, and nihilism is pretty much diametrically opposed to religion, but if nihilism is also ultimate freedom, and care less about others, then should you not respect those people for their different choice? shouldn't they have the freedom to do so. What about other things you are opposed to, maybe political views, or sexual oriention (not saying you have to join them, but naming just a few obvious ones that seem to generally lead to conflict or extreme rejection). Now i'm not saying you need to agree with everything, but what about their freedom and respect. And possibly how much respect they have for the freedom of others, in their attitude towards others. OR maybe to the planet, or to other living beings… how much respect do they disserve, can they redeem themselves? So, asking yourself a lot of questions in regards to your stance to things, probing your mind and heart with mental experiments. What if A, B or C would die, how would you feel. Do the burn your house down in your mind (Not actually burn your house down!!), and you may find the same thing that i did. What about general social interaction, social norms, when you break it down... so actually become more and more nihilistic, what remains, and what does nihilism actually mean, what does it give and does it truly 'take' anything? (personally liked the 'why care not to care' sentence i wrote earlier, because of how it relates to nihilism and this subject matter so much. So perhaps ponder on that. :)

Watching this. Now, in 2020. In times where social exclusion is ordered upon us… It scares me. No, I am not allowing myself to be scared. It upsets me. What is happening in the world right now is so cruel. This cannot go on. We cannot continue to "obey" to do this to ourselves, us, as social human beings.

It's really tough, isn't it? A virus is unlike so many other challenges. In most disasters, we humans can come together to literally give each other helping hands. With a virus, that helping hand can sicken or kill us. Because we humans are so social, and those connections are so vital to us, this virus hits us in our hearts.

New question: Do we have goodness in our hearts by birth, or is it learned from our mother, friends, etc? Can we give goodness and compassion without receiving (tasting that feeling) ourselves first? And are schools and social structures designed to give us that? Or are we downplaying this important aspect of us, maybe deliberately? Putting too much responsibility and pressure on families (again individual unit approach)? I think compassion is like an empty vessel we born with but it has to be filled. Would like to hear your thoughts on this as well if still not mentioned. Best :)
@ReWildUniversity
@ReWildUniversity 6 жыл бұрын
Wow, I love the questions you ask! I like your idea of it being an empty vessel we are born with, but it needs to be filled. It does seem much like that to me -- that we have vast potential for compassion, but depending on how we are raised, that potential will or won't manifest. To me it seems that humans are inherently good, but we are brought up in an atmosphere of distrust, sometimes of abuse, of being told that we aren't inherently good. And we begin to believe it. Our ego-self gets in the way too -- when we feel we have to defend our ego, we often aren't our "best selves". Lots to think of here -- thank you for asking such powerful questions! =) Kenton

Excellent topic, kudos to whoever suggested it! How apropos, chickens and the topic of the pecking (picking) order... How do I safeguard my soul from slipping into a conformity that demands sacrificing morals? I must trust in God for my moral compass. Likewise, I shouldn't throw someone under the bus because he disagrees with me on one or more 'non essential' beliefs eg.political etc. . I like to use the term Truthseekers for those whom I seek friendship with. We all have intrinsic value as human beings, regardless of whether or not we like someone. Unfortunately, our throw away society cultivates that same disregard for one another "divide et impera"
@ReWildUniversity

Throw-away indeed. So tragic when we apply it to humans. God is obviously strong in your life, and it makes me think of Jesus who saw the "throw-away" people as just as relevant (or perhaps even moreso) than the "important people" at the top. =) Kenton

Thanks for this great video. The older i get the more i realise that tribal needs are powerful and sometimes problematic. It sometimes has felt to me like to be a member, you have to not only support the tribe, but also blindly oppose the perceived opposition. I felt this just recently when i was praising Trump for meeting Kim Jong Un. I really think Trump is a fool but a broke clock is right twice a day and all that. My tribe are lefties and were uncomfortable with my praise for him. i felt like my commitment to the tribe was being questioned. It's a suffocating feeling. I have huge respect for your friend for stepping away from his group of friends to get his head straight, its a bold move.
@ReWildUniversity
@ReWildUniversity 6 жыл бұрын
Paul, I'd LOVE to see us begin to think like this -- not classifying people into groups and then closing our minds to other possibilities. That was very open-minded of you, when you view Trump in a certain way, and yet could see some positivity in one of his actions. It doesn't mean that you are suddenly pro-Trump or that you've gone "right", but just that you are observing someone's actions and seeing something positive in them. I feel like we do this with people convicted of crimes -- they become "criminals" and are unworthy of even the slightest benefit of the doubt, while the truth is that many people convicted go through powerful changes and end up doing beautiful things in their lives. I have two friends who are felons (meaning they were convicted of a felony at one point in their life), and both are people I would trust my children with. If I saw them only as the box society has put them in, I would not have those friendships, and I'd be missing out. Thank you for your compassionate, open mind. That sort of thinking will change our world. =) Kenton

Hmmm. I copy-pasted it and maybe that's the problem. Here is what I had replied: As Victor says in another comment, that "band of brothers" ideal has largely been lost. So this does indeed seem to be missing . . .
