I absolutely adore those old radio shows like Orson was describing. I love to listen to the Martin and Lewis Show and the Shadow and all those wonderful old radio shows any time. It is a real shame that there aren't more stations doing those now days.
@JakeMabe17 жыл бұрын
Martin Lewis If you mean few stations are airing the original shows from radio's golden era, you can find them on several stations coast-to-coast, both terrestrial and Internet feeds. If you mean it's a shame nobody is producing new scripted radio shows, I agree, but it's a lost art. "The Adventures of Harry Nile" is the last one I know of, and it just didn't work. Same thing with the "Twilight Zone" audio dramas. Fun, but just a bit off, partially because they rehashed television scripts and the late, great Rod Serling was long gone. Elliott Lewis, Norman Corwin, and others correctly noted (I recommend listening to their interviews with John Dunning and/or Chuck Schaden online) that radio acting is a lost art, especially done well, much more nuanced than what is required for film or television. Himan Brown, though, pulled it off with good, if uneven, episodes of the "CBS Radio Mystery Theater" from 1974-82, as did Elliott Lewis for the "Sears/Mutual Radio Theater" during roughly that same period. But both came from a radio background and were helped for awhile by the '50s nostalgia boom in the 1970s. Advertisers eventually became skittish -- Sears even dropped its sponsorship of Lewis's ambitious program. And, sadly, attention spans have now dwindled to about eight minutes, maybe less, even among older adults. The BBC still produces a bunch of well-crafted scripted radio, though. Nothing beats the "theater of the mind," that's for sure!
@martinlewis22797 жыл бұрын
Well put. That is exactly what I meant. I am glad to see that someone else understands and appreciates the art of radio drama. So many people now days do not, it;s true. One of the few things I have found that were like that at all in the last decade was the radio drama version of 'The Screw Tape Letters' which I thought was fairly well done. Thank you for the reply, its good to know that some one else understands where I am coming from.

Wonderful entertainer. I have to say that Juliet Prowse seemed to be all over him though, to the point of just about being inappropriate, in some shows, especially the one with Bob Hope. Dean had his arms crossed, typical defensive posture. Have seen that tendency with several female entertainers, he is just so attractive and fun to be around, plus gorgeous. I get it, you just can't do it on stage. I think that Dean's "philandering" image may have been driven more by women going after him than the other way around. He is what you'd call 'cuddly', warm and affectionate. A human capybara.

There is not even a single credit here for music director/ conductor, arrangers, or musicians. Those guys are not an option in this show, but a requirement.
@ianjones99615 жыл бұрын
Eh, that was just the way of it back in the day. Credits used to be way shorter, due to a combination of fewer people being involved in productions and it not being a rule that everyone who worked on a thing got credited. Go back and watch a black and white movie and there'll be maybe 10 people credited at the end. I remember the first time I took my grandfather to see a Marvel movie, and told him we had to stay for the credits because they always put an extra scene afterwards. He spent the next 20 minutes being increasingly flabbergasted and exclaiming things like "Did everyone in the world work on this picture?"

I like the show, even tough I’ve personally never been cared that much for Dean’s personae. Was any of the show actually performed in front of a live audience, is it only canned laughter or, like many shows a mix of the two, i.e., they will either fill-in laughs in dead spots or layer laughter on top or mix in pre-recorded segments with a laugh track with live studio audience laughter? (By the way, I’m not asking for speculation, so please answer only if you actually know the answer.)
