These are treasures and thank you for sharing them with us. By the comments, you can tell how much everyone treasures Martin and Lewis - the greatest act in show business. They were something beyond show business, as a matter of fact. What's fascinating here is that Dean already seems to be transitioning into the "Dean Martin" he becomes with the Rat Pack, the drunk act, and the TV show where you rarely catch him being as natural and normal as he was with Jerry. And here's the Rat Pack act itself - except here it has real humor and heart. And there's true chops going on - from the great singing, the terrific "Pardners" number, and everything that made them quite literally perfect and great. They were already long broken up before I was born, and I didn't know anything about their prior success. As Pamela puts it below, they need more people of today's generation to know more about them. A book that analyzes - and celebrates - what they did would be a start. Jerry's book was great, but maybe something more? The only other question I have is: they made the last Colgate Comedy Hour in November, 1955, and it's worth wondering why they never made any others leading up to this, March, 1956. I wish they could have found a way to work together on occasion - they would have been right back at the top in films and TV. I mean, they were on top separately too, but their act together was on par with the best ever. You don't see anything even approaching it today. Thanks again for sharing, sorry for the long comment, lol. Can you tell I'm a fan?

@jerrylewisthekid547910 ай бұрын
They were not allowed to work separately. Jerry had asked York Production (their production company but half managed by Paramount) if he could make a film on his own but Paramount didn't give him permission. If I'm not mistaken in 1955. They were bound by Paramount and that idiot Hall Wallis to work as a couple. The only way they could make separate films was to break up "Martin & Lewis". Jerry tried in every way to break the contract with Hall Wallis but there were too many reasons that tied them together. Wallis wanted them together.

I really wish that Jerry’s widow Sandra and the Stabile family would be willing to release much more of this material. And hopefully from a more harmonious time In their working relationship. Watching this is wonderful and yet very sad. By then they knew it was over, we’re not talking and Dean thinking Jerry was a dollar sign. Yet they made it to July as the consummate professionals they were. At least they were on speaking terms at the end of Dean’s life. And Jerry knew how important this gig was.
@jerrylewisthekid547911 ай бұрын
They made up after 14 months of this show. They were often in contact by phone, they met at public events, when Dean's father died, Jerry went to him to offer condolences and those present said that they hugged each other like old times and much much more. It's not true that they haven't spoken to each other for 20 years. At least until the end of 1967 they spoke to each other. Their own children were friends. And months before the 1976 Telethon they were in contact again (it seems that they wrote greetings for each other's performances on the dressing room mirrors with red lipstick as they did when they were friend and before officially becoming a team). The 20 years without speaking is a myth that both of them wanted to carry forward, no one knows why. But their contacts and meetings are well documented with photos and videos as well as scoops in the newspapers of the time.

And when Dean was now old and ill, he confided to his son Ricci that he missed the years with Jerry so much. I have the text of what I'm writing. @@josephpalermo4538 Well you clearly don’t know that Frank was a HUGE M&L fan appearing on their radio program multiple times. I get it though you love Dean and villianize Jerry. Happens all the time. ✌🏼
@jerrylewisthekid54793 жыл бұрын
@@josephpalermo4538 Joey Bishop OFFICIALLY wrote the Rat Pack material. But most of what they put on stage came from Jerry Lewis. Dean Martin brought what he did with him into the Rat Pack. It would be enough to look at the performances of Martin & Lewis and compare them with those of the Rat Pack. I remind you that three quarters of the members of the Rat Pak were friends of Jerry. Sammy Davis was his greatest friend, Frank Sinatra loved Jerry from the beginning, Shirley MacLaine has always been friends with Jerry. It wasn't accepted just because Dean Martin was there. On that stage was the ghost of Jerry Lewis. Only Jerry's haters don't take the idea.

Bla Bla Bla with the Jerry Lewis fan clubbers claiming the Rat Pack took their act from M&L. Horsepucky! It was with the Rat Pack that Dean changed his entire image. He worked hard with Jerry: energetic dancing, physical comedy, mayhem; even his singing style featured his full range on difficult-to-sing songs. All that changed with the RP. Dean developed his drunk, laid back, very cool persona and never again let them see him sweat. The RP was the evolution of diverse personalities and individual talents who riffed off of one another in ad lib fashion. M&L did not invent ad libbing-although Lewis would probably take credit for that too!
