I work on a lot of old homes and unfortunately it comes down to modern building codes. Plus any damage from it being abandoned. 1.5 million maybe cheap but renovations can get expensive. At least they are keeping the profile of the house. It's maddening to drive into an old neighborhood with beautiful old homes and see one or two modern monstrosities built where they just tore the old houses down.

It is extremely hard to get a structure in the NRHP (National Register of Historic Places), that this house cannot be saved by them. It does not matter who lived there, it is the architecture of the place that is determined by them to be unique to a certain place in time. I would hope that somebody could save this house, but I would not bet on it. Very sad.

This house, Dean's house, is located at 1123 N Via Monte, the dividing line between Los Palmas and Vista Las Palmas. Our house is at N Via Norte and W Vista Chino, across the street from the Jack Benny house. We've been following the refit and are happy to see progress on what will be a sensitive renovation of the building. If you observe the developments in the area, you'll know the city is very careful about what they allow. The newly re-imagined house will be much closer to the original than the neglected and sad version shown in your previous video. Not far from Dean's house is the Elvis honeymoon house. That entire cul-de-sac has been rebuilt, with the houses on either side of the honeymoon house having been razed. It's not clear if the new owner of the honeymoon house intends to incorporate that land into theirs, making it a much grander estate.

Hmm, interesting. Either they do demolitions down there differently than in Canada ( where they take in a front end loader type of machine that literally tears it down, once anything valuable is removed, like the copper pipes, wiring, etc. ), or that house is being very carefully dismantled to be moved and re-constructed, perhaps, and not just renovated ? It would be expensive, but there's LOTS of 'money' out there that could /would do it ! Be interesting to see what happens next ! Great video, Scott. Thanks for keeping us posted. When you think of it, the important thing is that the structure is eing saved. Realistically, the house needs to be safe and usable. When a house is left unused, everything deteriorates esp. Plumbing and electrical, but also mold. So some people are advised by the architect or builder to start from scratch, kind of like not putting a new patch of cloth on a rotting fabric. But it seems the bones on this house were good (probably due to the dry climate).

Perhaps Dino wanted a home that was as “fireproof” as practical. It will be interesting to see how the house is rebuilt… if it stays true to original style or is a completely modern in style.
