If Deana really likes to live near the water, you should‘ve checked out the western part of Leipzig (Plagwitz/Schleussig/Lindenau). The Clara-Zetkin-Park and the Auwald are very close too. So, you would combine the best of both worlds there - the greenish parks and the water but also great industrial buildings with nice lofts and apartments. Did you know, that Leipzig ranks after Hamburg and Berlin as the city with the most bridges in Germany. It has actually more than Venedig - even though the ones in Venedig are a bit more beautiful 😜 The lakes south of Leipzig are great too... Especially in summer. Compared with other German cities the rents in Leipzig are super cheap. The city is kinda „hip“ with loads and loaaads of students. It is also quite compressed and not so copious like Berlin for example. You can go everywhere by bike but the Tram system is really great as well. The city is currently booming. Most of the empty places you‘ve seen around the city centre (west of the main station, south of the new town hall, Bayerischer Bahnhof) are gonna be new living space/parks in not even 10 years. With around 600.000 people living in Leipzig it’s not too big but not too small either. If you need more shops or whatever, Berlin is 2 hours away, Dresden 1, Fankfurt around 3 hours by train. The city is soo energetic but if you want it can be super classic as well (the old trade fair arcades, ...). All in all a great city (at least for me 😜)

I'm an American retired educator and have lived in this extraordinary city for 23 years. The love for my second "heimat" grows daily. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be here. I might add that I also have a second flat in Dresden which I enjoy having very much for the last 10 years. When asked about my preference between the two cities, Dresden is stunningly beautiful, but the spirit, general vibe , and university influence of Leipzig is where I spend the majority of my time.

Beautiful city, I want to go back. Looks like you missed the Thomaskirche. It also has a big place in history, it is the home of the Thomanerchor, one of the oldest boy choirs in the world at over 800 years, and which was for over 25 years conducted by JS Bach himself, who composed most of his choral work for this choir. And also the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Both institutions super high on the prestige scale.

You just visited my favorite city in Germany. I live in NRW since my birth, but I visit Leipzig on a regular term for 20 years now. There is something called WGT (Wave-Gotik-Treffen) which normally takes place there (this year it was cancelled because of the virus) and which is the reason why I go there once a year. I fell in love with the city, its people and the whole atmosphere there. It breathes history not only because of the GDR but also because of the many artists and writers who lived there. Ancient and modern bulidings come together for a unique melange you won't find anywhere else. When it comes to the Völkerschlachtdenkmal I recommend to also visit the Krypta next time which is a room in the basement. It actually looks like something from Lord of the Rings with its impressive architecture and huge statues and figurines. And there is much more to explore there. Leipzig has an area with several lakes where you can swim or ride a boat or cycle or go for a walk around them and I absolutely love the variety of restaurants and bars all over the city. We miss our Leipzig since we couldn't go there this year and look so much forward to it in 2021. The WGT is one thing, but we actually miss the city more than the festival, I swear... and that's what I say after experiencing both for 20 years.

Yeah, Leipzig is great, at least for a visit. I am not sure I would want to life there, though. It is in a way surrounded by nothing, which is geat if you love being out in the nature, but I personally prefer living in more populated areas. Plus, while Leipzig itself is Legida free, Pegida is very much active in the surrounding area. But Leipzig itself is amazing, and the people living there very open minded in my experience.

I live in Braunschweig, been for business for few months in many cities in Germany, before I settled somewhere with my family (München, Ulm, Hamburg, Osnabrück, Stuttgart), but Braunschweig I would not change for anything. It's not so big like Hamburg, Hannover or Leipzig,, but big enough to have everything man can have in a big city. It's a city with all advantages of one industrial urban area, but with a lot of green areas, very nice and quiet and fantastic history. It is actually one of the oldest and most influentual cities in the whole Germany. It is also the city with most percentage young people in the whole Germany. Flat and house prices are higher than in a village, of course, not too cheap, but not so much in compare to Munchen, Frankfurt or Hamburg. Der Löwenstadt👍

I visited on wednesday last week for the first time the city of Leipzig. And I was amazed. You don't often find the mixture of small-town-feeling in a major city. The public parks near the central city and the many interesting museums I found were amazing, too. And then the Völkerschlachtdenkmal. One of the biggest memorials in Europe. The City of Leipzig is, as far as I know the east german bigger Cities (Dresden, Halle, Magdeburg, Potsdam, Erfurt, Berlin), my favourite right now. Many young people, all friendly, musicians in the pedestrian zone, many Cafes and Restaurants. Do you have a favourite right now? How about Hannover? One of the greenest cities in Europe. And it is not as boring as many people say.

There are so many beautiful towns in Eastern Germany. My personal favorites are Weimar and Erfurt and - like someone in the comments already said - the historic towns along the Baltic coast: Greifswald, Stralsund, Rostock, Wismar, and Luebeck (which is in former West Germany right at the former border between East and West). These are smaller towns, but some of them are quite lively, thanks to universities and/or tourism. Whenever I am in Thuringia, I pick dishes that come with Thuringian potato dumplings (thüringische Klöße). Love them.

Thuringian sausage is probably the best in Germany. My cousin and his wife lived on the border in Hesse, they would go into Thuringia and get sausage and meat sometimes because of the quality. Their Putzfrau was Thuringian, she worked for them before reunification, already and came once a week to clean for 20 yrs until her husband retired then she quit, too.

Hi Deana and Phil im from Leipzig. You`re Awesome. You walked sooooo much around. Look like both of you walked your Feets totally off. Leipzig is since the 2000 one of the Fast Growing City`s in Eastern Germany now. From 2000 we were only 500.000 inhabitants, now 600.000 like you said...its still growth. Kohlrollanden, never try from the Supermarket...pls cook it from you own...all the Can/Glass bottled Stuff are not worth it buy, and don`t taste good at all. What you`ve not Visited...the big Lakes in the South of L.E. (L.A.) ; )))) the Cospudener See is very big and ALL Leipzig People are go there to the BEACH xD Wish you`ve had seen in, but totally clear that would be too much on one Day. Less than half is true, but misleading as Rostock is less than one third of the size of Leipzig. It does have around 200k but this is mostly because of the outskirts and feels much smaller. It is very nice, though, with the old harbor directly in the city, very walkable, and the nice beach at Warnemünde only 15 min S-Bahn away. There are also some nice pubs etc. and "student culture". But don't expect any big city shopping or clubbing etc.

Hi Deana and Phil, it's funny I've been there as well in September. Woud have been really nice to meet you guys on the street. You should have visited the Zoo. It was incredible. However I was a little disappointed by the Völkerschlachtsmuseum from inside and the little Napoleon Museum next to it. However the size of that building is impressive. In the park next to it is a crematorium with an old cemetary. Sounds weird - but it's really pretty and calm there. The sound in the Thomas Kirche was really great too. I was lucky been there during a choir practice.

We moved to Leipzig 3 years ago. My wife transferred here (I'm retired). As you said Leipzig is the "new" Berlin. It is the fastest growing city in Germany and it was voted the best place to live, in Germany. I am still learning German, but there are more people, than I thought, who speak English, or passable English. I had my reservations about coming. I thought it would be dirty, ugly etc, but it is not. It's very beautiful. There are plenty of lakes, natural and man made. There is Belantis, an amusement park that is next to one of the four lakes. In addition to the park you can walk/cycle around the lakes, picnic, boating etc. Leipzig is pretty flat, so if you like running, walking or cycling you won't beat yourself up getting around. I do like the fact that there are a lot of people who cycle for exercise and shopping. It brings back memories of days gone by.
