Having completed this recently, I can say that this is a tough day of walking! To my mind, more wearing than any single day on the Pennine Way or WHW. Dean, you do stress the challenge and the sharpness of climbs and descents! I'd camped at Osmotherley YHA, having walked in from Helmsley (starting at 3.15 in the afternoon!) Walking from Osmotherley to Kildale is fantastic - fabulous views, a variety of paths and easy route finding - but the first 15 miles is hard on old knees! I could not contemplate climbing to the monument at the end of the day! Well Done!

Thanks for watching Gerard, this day is perhaps one of the best on the Cleveland Way. It’s a tough one but very rewarding if you get the views.

I was looking online to see how long it'd take to walk from Lord Stones to Captain Cooks Monument and found this video - whilst it didn't answer my question, I loved watching it and hearing of your enjoyment of this part of the UK! Hearing of the struggle up Kildale as well... oh I remember feeling that. There's a small waterfall at one point that I wanted to find, I'd never been that way and thought I'd head out on one of the warmest days of the year... heading that way from Gribdale car park was easy enough, but the return journey... wowzers. I've sworn to myself - never again! If I ever do the Cleveland Way, I'm going to skip it. I was just at Captain Cooks Monument today (although I walked up the other side to see the Iron Age structure over that way then had a random walk for a couple of hours before heading back) and have been to Lord Stones numerous times - seeing the shots of these areas brought back many memories, and of the areas I've not walked in between - definitely something I'll need to see for myself once the weather warms up a bit! You've got yourself a subscriber, and I'm going to now have to watch the other parts to this, too.

You put some good miles in there Dean, your commentary is inspiring saying it as you travel the route. I travelled the Cleveland Way in 1993 my first of many LDPs. It brings back fond memories I to remember the strange feeling at Cold Kirby and the bizarre feeling of a sudden drop in temperature as we walked through the hamlet Loved the views over the hills to Roseberry topping and the sea looming in the distance.

Hi Dean, just as a point worth remembering, you could connect the 2 ends of the Cleveland way doing the Tabular hills walk to make it a circular traipse. From Scarborough to Helmsley adding about 40 miles. I like this walk very much , it goes against the grain of the NYM but I liked it very much, not as well trod as the Cleveland way. You would miss out the bit from Scarborough to Filey. But a better walk for the discerning traveler. john M

Another binge watch for me. I just have to ask, you get these blocks of time where you can go away. You talked about work on the Penine Way. What do you do for a living, if I may ask? I've just retired after completing my 43 years of gainful employment at 60 and last 25 years as a psychiatric nurse, so I get the thoughts of failure and low mood after the abortive hike. Nursing a random bad back gives me time to binge, but I have to ask again one supplementary question. How old are you? Your daughter is grown, but you still look youthful. My confusion lies in music and film references. I'd say late 30s, but your film/music puts you later, especially with Cat Stevens, amongst others. I love that you do your own music too. I'll continue my binge. Thank you for giving me content, as well as your narration and orations. Love it. On to the next episode.
@DeanRead3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I'm 38 so you guessed well. I work in the medical supplies industry but had lots of spare leave that year so used it all up to do those hikes. I'm work in the office now 9-5 but I used to work shifts and do 4 on 4 off, those shifts allowed me to have a mini adventure pretty much every week. 😁

Hi Dean, you made #TeamHobNob proud today, what an epic trail, much more stimulating than yesterday's section. @gainesy_walks5 жыл бұрын
forddude1976 I didn't but bivvied discretely, set up late and off early. Just waited and had a brew until everyone left. Had a bivvy bag and small tarp with walking poles. From the monument theres a path below that goes around just under the top. Theres one or two spots under there. I only camped there as there were not many options for digs really close to the path.

Fantastic video Dean, I really enjoyed the route. It looks like a very beautiful walk. By the way, if you don't mind me asking, is this walk fairly well signposted with good paths throughout, or is it necessary to use google maps at points to navigate with certainty. Would appreciate any info. Thanks.
@DeanRead2 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, thanks for watching. The route is fairly well signposted but I would definitely advise using the Ordnance Survey map app over Google maps. It will give you a better chance of staying on route in the places where it's not clear.

@@DeanRead Apologies for my late reply Dean. Thank for the info on the route, it is definitely on my to do list now, but with some proper planning! I hate getting lost! There's something about the bleakness of the NYM that makes them special and just how far you can see on a clear day. Have a look at gary Fisher's channel when you have the time. He's walked the length and breadth of them. Are you ok with company for a couple of miles on Friday ?

Not sure I like this "modern way " of supported on the route method .You get picked up at pick up points and driven to a nice comfy bed ..Thats not the way its done especially at your age. you carry everything you have to and camp .I m, not staying watching you because its everything I don t like about "the modern way. Pretty disgusting . I m 72 and just did the full route carrying full weight pack and wild camping. I find you people absolute frauds , sorry if you don t like it
@DeanRead2 жыл бұрын
I have to laugh at your comment Stuart, I'd have thought someone at the age of 72 would have more compassion for their fellow humans. To call someone a fraud who is out their having an adventure and doing it their own way is a bit heartless don't you think? Not everyone wants to wild camp or rough it, you are creating a barrier to people enjoying the outdoors if you demand that people do it that way. I'd like to think I create content that encourages and inspires all people of all abilities to get out and enjoy the outdoors, maybe giving them the confidence to go out and tackle their first adventure on a trail like this. Demanding everyone does it your way and calling people frauds is narrow minded. Thank you for your comment and taking your time to watch the videos, I hope people see my response to you and know that I don't agree with your views. Happy hiking everyone, walk your own walk and don't listen to those that would tell you that you can't do it
@stuartchester68992 жыл бұрын
Trouble is Dean you have wrecked the Cleveland Way . you remind me of people who use E bikes and get assistance by electric motors .."the modern way " the fraudulent way IMO Cleveland Way has a problem in the moorland section when one has to carry quite a lot of weight from Osmotherly to Skelton .Carrying extra food for two days plus lots of extra water on top of all the camping gear . You can be carrying 13/14 kgs which makes a hell of a lot of a difference compared to your weedy 2kgs in your daypack .. Why don t you watch a man doing it the true way and see the difference how doing it unsupported camping is a completely different task . Watch Haze Oudoors who did it ,( probably a bit foolhardy) in a real heatwave last July 13 /14 when temp hit almost 40 c ..So I say to your people who have subscribed to your wusse way is watch the true way and subscribe to people like Abbie Barnes ( she would nt dream of doing it your way ) Haze or Tim Norton and other proper walkers.. IMO you re far too young to be mollycoddling the Cleveland Way .I hope one day you toughen up and do it again , the proper way..unsupported by wifey picking you up and driving you to a hotel lol..That just stinks to high heaven and your lot make a mockery of long distance footpaths .When I first did the Pennine way back in the 1970 s everyone did it the proper way. And all Youth Hostels made it mandatory to arrive for the night under your steam. Toughen up Dean and stop being so wussy
@stuartchester68992 жыл бұрын
@@DeanRead i will give some respect on your videos in that you are a very good communicator , better than a lot of the KZbin walking gang and you are doing a respectable daily mileage . Personally I ve never attempted these fairly hard routes without carrying a really heavy pack on my back but I suspect 20 miles for me carrying say 2 kgs would be a bit of a doddle compared to 13 kgs .Just try it and see the difference. that would makes . Its a hell of a difference getting up steep inclines fighting gravity carrying heavy weight on your back and also the legs and feet take a bigger hammering . I do train before my LDF s and I can do a fast 20 miles in about 6 hrs walking at a brisk pace.. One day I want to see you with a big pack on your back and wifey left at home and you doing the Pennine Way again all on your own , no hotels or Air B n B s doing it the true way as hundreds of thousands of others have done it in the past..Theres a challenge for you .

@@stuartchester6899 thanks for your response. have a look at my recent videos where I walked across Scotland, carrying everything on my back and camping all the way.
