Two notes: 1) People are asking whether viewers can do anything about the ads they see, and the short answer is "not really." I made a short video addressing it further that can be seen here: kzbin.infoLni4Yp9i12g?feature=share 2) There is a point in the video where I referred to anti-trans bigots as "an insane minority," when I meant "an insanely small minority." Apologies for not quite wording that correctly, it wasn't meant to reflect mental state.

I know OT, Jammie, and the Click, have all complained about the adds that show up on their channels. It is like moving through garbage to see them sometimes. I would not be surprised if they tried going through KZbin directly and being told there is nothing they can do. I hope they see this and share it to others. Even if it feels like you can never block enough before more keep coming. Thank you for sharing this! Hugs 🫂

I seem to recall that issue being mentioned in a livestream some time ago (I think at Clicky), and they said that those advertisers like PragerU will deliberately mis-categorize their ads to circumvent category blocking.. e.g. a recent "educational" video about feminism got tagged as "cooking". They really don't seem to care who gets their blurb thrown at them, as long as it's as many eyes as possible.

Personally I prefer to use the word "crafty," as it acknowledges their intelligence without the positive connotation of the word smart. they don't just make it unclear. They downright don't tell you. Yeah woo there are videos on the platform for how to do it, but everyone knows that most websites CAN'T control the ads they run as often ad space is a third party Ad "congregator" ,wherein a third party distrubutes ads under their umbrella (which can be anything from right wing propaganda to straight up scams or viruses). It's been internet wisdom for a long time that it's simply not possible , so they do not seek out fixes. Even once you do find a solution you have to stay on top of it CONSTANTLY to prevent these things from happening from then on which unfairly places a LOT of work on people who can't afford to pay people to keep up with it.

At this point in my life, those ads are wasted on me. But when I was young, there was a point where I was struggling with ideas from my religious upbringing, and ads like these could have sent me down a darker path. Even now, I find them upsetting, not for what hold they could have on me today, but on what they do to others who are still struggling to accept themselves. Commenting for algoritm. The idea that creators cannot do anything about ads is something I've heard several times, and is smth I assumed to be true myself, so it's nice to hear that it isn't entierly true. So hopefully creators who assume they don't have any control will see this and learn that they actually do.

My brother made an observation that when our KZbin premium lapsed, he, a nonbinary trans man, and I, a nonbinary trans person, got almost exclusively right wing and mostly anti trans ads. I am unsure who chooses which ads run on which channels but my thoughts are 1) if it's KZbin that chooses, they want you to feel threatened, upset, and annoyed so you buy KZbin premium, and 2) if it's the ad creators that choose, not only are they harrassing and threatening a vulnerable population...well even bad press is engagement in their message and opposition to a message can make those who do believe it hold onto it even tighter (just look at the gas stove debate!) And by showing it to people who they know will disagree, they can get that opposition at the same time as they can make that population feel unsafe Whoever chooses, youtube is making the choice to make their platform hostile to minorities by not telling people up front that they can filter the ads on their channel and curate their platform (and also for allowing those ads in the first place)

I think people who consume LGBT friendly content are targeted to receive these videos. I'm pretty sure you can chose the demographic you target when placing ads. So like being a woman around 30 I'm getting lots of pregnancy test/diaper commercials. Even though I'm single and childless. I would bet that conservative right wing commercials are being targeted at people who the think "need it the most". And it almost made me gag writing that last bit.

This should be interesting. Honestly ive seen a bunch of right wing, anti trans ads on all my fav leftist creators lately. So if there is a way to chwnge those on the creators end then maybe this will be a good educational video for them. The creators probably dont even realize its happening. Ive also been getting a ton of right wing recommendations in my feed and i have no odea why that is happening at all. YT seems to be pushing some type of agenda for sure lately.
@Stephen-Fox
@Stephen-Fox Жыл бұрын
I don't think the right wing recommendations is (deliberately) insidious, but just an algorithm designed to drive viewers towards videos that get the best engagement. Right-wing videos tend to get good engagement (and watch time) relative to the number of viewers they get, making the algorithm like them, and they've got their fingers in enough pies that they make right wing leaning videos on any pop culture issue that they think they can get recruits from by harnessing nerd rage and then funnelling people down various pipelines. Angry content usually gets more engagement than happier content, so algorithms that base what they suggest on engagement tend to recommend it more.

@@Stephen-FoxYT needs to borrow some tips on the algorithm from tiktok or something. I don't get much of right-wing things in normal recommendations, but it's really bad in Shorts. I always hit "don't show videos from this channel" without any other engagement besides occasional report, but some days it's still keeps pouring. From 30 videos in a row it can be 10-15 vids with some deep right-wing stuff, and it's not the content I watch _at all_. It gets me back on the fence about whether there's something deliberate about it or not.

@@resstieyes!! Shorts is so bad. It comes out of nowhere and lasts for like 1-3 days even if I scroll right past without engaging any longer than a few seconds to realize their topic of discussion. I’ve gotten really into the “do not show this channel” feature because of that but I almost wonder if the KZbin algorithm takes that as a challenge and just shows me similar content on different channels i haven’t “blocked” instead. Like there’s been times where I get clips of a similar topic or figure speaking on seemingly 10 different channels back to back.

@@resstie I suspect TikTok's relative lack of alt-right content stems from the fact that the alt-right thinks TikTok is China's equivalent of the NSA or some such. And yes, there are reasons to dislike TikTok. There's plenty wrong with that platform specifically. I live in Switzerland where those advertisers don't know we exist, so I don't get too many weird ads luckily. Except for a bit PraherU was advertising on SciShow (but I believe the company behind SciShow has figured out how to block PragerU). I also for a few days got an ad from a specific clinic in missouri that were advertising "alternatives to abortion". That one was definitely a case of ineptitude, cause it was truly trying to get people to use their service. Except they were advertising on the other side of the world. The most annoying ads I get is weird scams. Robot voices reading off ads for "buy these laser goggles used by the military". Or " buy this product that can cool down a room in just 15 seconds (which I believe is just a box that tells you to poor liquid nitrogen into it and then you have to source your own liquid nitrogen of course). By the way, youtube viewers: you can also block ads. Click on the little dots (or maybe it's an i) at the bottom of the ad and click on preferences. Then you can block an ad.

Thank you for the video, Vera! Two points about this problem of unwanted advertisements promoting misinformation and/or hate speech: -Google making the process of controlling ads to be convoluted is very on purpose in order to make hard for the content creators to do so, while, at the same time, the corporation is able to use plausible deniability by saying that the same creators are not being restricted of accessing this option. You see a lot of this kind of ill practice when trying to cancel any subscription services. Corporations want to pretend not to be anti-consumer, so they will try to hide or disguise these practices very well. -The argument "they are wasting their money on the wrong crowd" is very dangerous! As Vera mentioned, if new viewers without any progressive knowledge, especially centrists and/or queer people "in the closet", visit the channels of queer or ally content creators and they see this kind of ad, there is a bigger risk of them following and informing themselves through it because it seems that the same creators endorse the ad. Additionally, speaking as a cis queer person and trans ally, I always feel disgusted when hearing about bigots, such as Matt Walsh and Andrew Tate. I am well aware that I need to inform myself about their very harmful discourses in order to also pushback against them (it being akin to ingest poison to gain immunity), but having to see them intersect with the progressive and leftist content I consume, it definitely has a bad effect on my mental state.

So, this isn't a great solution, but for those that want to not see certain ads when watching KZbin, there's a way to block specific ads from showing up. This isn't a replacement for what the creators should do, but this could help if you really don't want to see something. While the ad is up, you should see an "i" in a circle at the bottom of the ad. If you click it, there should be an option to "Stop seeing this ad" which will give you the ability to not see said ad again... Saying that, any other ads from the same place will still play, unfortunately. It's annoying, but at least it can help you stop seeing things that make you angry. Anyway, this video is such good info and I hope creators see this one. I'll keep this info in the back of my mind for next time I see bad ads on a video, just to spread the word.

I think OT is the kind of guy who would be very receptive to this kind of info. As others have said, he is very tied to his community (he worried a lot that hitting 1 million would cause him to lose that connection) & a fierce ally, having raised 100k for the Trevor Project over the years (of which he has talked about contributing too). So, I think it might be worth a shot messaging him on his discord or something. If he doesn't see it himself, then he has great mods who will no doubt pass the info on to him. Like you said, idk if it is a "looking for the silver lining" situation, I've been guilty of it myself, though I solved that problem by getting YT premium (it was just better for my mental health in the long run), and I have heard other LGBTQ+ creators (whether ally or part of the fam) say the same. Presumably because, as you pointed out, YT seem to have done a good job of hiding the ability to opt out of these things. So it really is info that needs to start getting passed around the community. You also opened my eyes too, because I had also come at it from someone who is secure in their political beliefs, and mistaken it for an attempt at swaying the audience, it never occured tk me to think of it as targetted harrassment...why I really should of given what those people are like who push that kind of bs propaganda. So I do hope this reaches OT and others like him. Because I'm pretty sure they don't like knowing those ads are playing on their channels. And poor OT gets demonetised far too damn often (ironically, especially so on the Ace themed vids) as it is too, because he won't back away from creating the kind of vids he believes in & knows we love. I did have a mini heart attack when I saw the title though, i was afraid he was being accused of some awful thing. Kudos for the admission it was mostly clickbaity lol.

Also, absolutely love the dramatic lashes you're wearing, they look super nice. ❣

I never would have known this was an issue. I've aggressively blocked ads since they first appeared online in the 2000s. Thank you for educating me on the situation. Like/Subbed.

This is so useful to know! I bet a ton of people have literally no idea, I hope this changes how many of these ads make it on a lot of videos.

This is absolutely one of the most important videos ln KZbin. Thank you! It drives me up the friggin wall to get these ads so I'll keep this video and the instructional video to block the ads in my back pocket for anyone who might need it

Posted a link to this video in the community tab on my channel as well as a link to the previous video on the topic. It's good to know that there's a way around those ads. Thank you for making this video. 👍
