I'm not entirely sure of the timeline, but I was doing a lil research into anti-trans athlete grifters & the one who claims to have been seriously injured? 'Partial paralysis'? Was volleyball. So, while I'm fairly certain the issue is just standard transphobia, I'm not totally convinced it's not trying to avoid looking like they're celebrating/profiting from that girl. Like, animation takes forever & I'm sure this went through a nightmare S&P process, so it's possible? Thanks for covering this, finally got me off my ass to watch the ep & it made me cry. & just fyi, since starting T I just DON'T cry, so it was a LOT.

So the incident you're describing was from April of 2023. Production for Season 2 started in February of that year, so the episode would have been pitched and likely written before that had occurred. Now it may well have been in the middle of storyboarding, but if that incident was a reason to can it then again: it should have happened before final animation.

It’s impossible to give across the board advice because it’s going to be completely different for everyone as to what will help it land the best, and not knowing your parents I don’t have much to base advice on. What I will say is that if you reason to believe one is liable to be notably more accepting than the other it may be best to come out to that one first so you’ll have an ally before coming out to the second.

From the point of view of someone who came up in the 60s & 70s, can you imagine all the groupies who went backstage with their heroes and did whatever was asked of them. Most of them didn’t feel like their boundaries were violated if a tongue was put in their ear, let alone other parts of their adored one’s bodies put into other parts of their bodies. Most of them were honoured and excited. Have you ever read any of the books written by former groupies? Those famous guys got away with so much shit, because sex wasn’t a big deal for most young girls at that time. “Love the one you’re with.” Maybe Neil Gaiman is still coming from that place, although he should know where things stand now if he’s taken in ANY societal changes over the years. Right from that first encounter, when he was 25, he comes across as having a schoolboy mentality and not having a clue what to do with a woman and also, one of those people who lacks empathy and so can’t read the feedback he is getting. Maybe that’s why he is a good writer. I’ve known many artists in my time, and they have, by and large, been self absorbed, childish and lacking in empathy. Is that a defence? No. Young people need to be taught that famous and talented people can be just as f***ked up as any person they meet on the street and to stop thinking they need to be near them. They will never be your friend or care about you. Never.

I like the way you handle the topic of dealing with adaptations. To cancel adaptations means that many people lose an important job and the money they need way more than the author, in this case. He probably got most of his money already, its just the money he gets for his showrunning in case of The Sandman. I understand everyone who wants nothing to do with artists that revealed such an ugly face, I really do. I know that if I read The Sandman again I will have to brace myself to not gag. But I read so many books from people who are obviously not good people. I read Ceasars De Bello Gallico. I read many very old classics, and I learned a lot. I read the favourite book of H+tler, more than once, and tried to figure out how those two characters fit together. The problem with the living ones is the feeling of betrayal. I knew what kind of person Ceasar was. I did'nt see what Gaiman was, I did'nt play Sherlock Holmes before I read his books. And after that, when I wanted to know something about the author, I did'nt dive deep. And I misinterpreted the signs that are now so obvious. Will I read the books again? I will. I will not throw them away or burn them, I'm not that kind of human. Will I enjoy them? No. But I will read them for the same reason I read Ceasar: to learn. To understand how those men function, how they think, how they operate and strategize and how they hide themselves. There are many of them and they have power. To not know them, to not understand how they funtion, how they lead and manipulate us, is dangerous. Now more than ever. They have tools Ceasar did'nt have.

Everyone, including me, thought this movie would be terrible. But I’m glad to say it was actually fantastic. Highly recommend. The drama is still weird: the marketing campaign, the Ariana Grande x SpongeBob stuff, Cynthia’s weird freak out (maybe she was just having a bad day?). It’s so nice to be pleasantly surprised. Maybe there is hope for good movie musical adaptations (still sad no one talks about Tick, Tick, Boom). Now we’ll just have the longest intermission ever.

this is why I hate the lack of more episodic TV shows. I hate feeling like I'm probably missing something cool, but the TV show is boring up to the big reveal or whatever. I want more Xena and less Game of Thrones. Also bring back less serious non comedy TV shows. I miss fantasy and sci fi shows that could poke fun at itself (thats why the Orville is so good). In a world where we have an endless amount of media at our fingertips whenever we want, I don't have time to wait for something to get good after X episodes or X hours. I play a LOT of video games and have a massive backlog I want to get to. Whenever I'm watching a show or playing a game that takes a long time to get good, I just feel like I'm wasting time when I could be playing another one of my favorite games again or a new game on my endless backlog. I don't have time to for this shit.

My general rule with creators who have shown their whole ass is that I will only enjoy their product if they no longer profit from it. Because you can think a work is good and let it make you happy even if it happens to have been made by someone whose hand you wouldn't shake in public - but not they benefit from your enjoyment. Also, my heart breaks for the excellent actors and artists involved in these adaptions who are losing out from something they had no agency in.

I am curious...What do you all do with authors and artists who are dead, but who we now know were terrible people? Science fiction in particular has a long history of misogyny, racism, and homophobia. Do we throw out all the babies with the bathwater? I'm not defending Gaiman, Card, or Whedon. They are bad people. But must I stop enjoying and recommending their art?
@CouncilofGeeks
@CouncilofGeeks 23 сағат бұрын
Authors being literally deceased simplifies matters because the concern of them causing any further harm off the back of continued success is taken off the table. Everybody is going to draw their own line on where their comfort level is. My own personal line generally starts from a position of "I won't partake of any new works from them." I'm not above purging workings I used to love but it's a rare case for me to do that (so far it's only really been with Cosby and Rowling).
@lisaboban
@lisaboban 23 сағат бұрын
@CouncilofGeeks Thank you for the gentle response. I do think at some point we must all come to terms with good art created by bad people. I think "American Gods" is a great novel that deserves recognition. I think "Enders Game" has been valiantly used by librarians to entice reluctant readers. And I think Cosby literally changed the face of comedy. Bad men - interesting art. And I do think that needs to be talked about.

I do wanna argue with you on Inside out 2. Riley is clearly bi or gay as she had a HUGE crush on another female character. So if that's the toned down and "less gay" version is madness to me. Also Nimona was going to be disney but they axed it.
@CouncilofGeeks
@CouncilofGeeks Күн бұрын
That’s… not really true of Nimona. Nimona was never intended to be Disney but they acquired it basically by accident when they bought Fox because it was happening under Fox owned Blue Sky Animation. And while the gay content was likely a factor, it would have cost them money to finish the project. A project they probably wouldn’t have greenlit from the beginning.

I've been watching your videos for a while, normally I don't comment on them (or any other videos really) but this video reminded me of my problems. I'm autistic, and for years I've been trying to get my shows televised (if you go to my channel you'll see them). TV stations here in Australia ask for a resume and I'm required by law to put down I'm autistic. Now because I'm autistic the ABC won't air my shows and when fully-abled producers pitch shows with similar concepts, they make them... and I think it's because I'm handicapped and it's part of the minority that doesn't pay taxes, there for doesn't help finance the ABC. The ABC have been like that for a long time, trying to get rid of an actress from a hit show in the 60s after she became paralysed, feeling they're not a charity set-up. Then recently I can't get community access television to air my shows, saying it's the quality... yet if you saw my shows you'd see I had them profesionally made. It wouldn't surprise me if community television didn't look at it and was like "Wow! You made a TV show! Good handicap boy!"

Disney is gatekeeping the episode "the gatekeeper" how ironic. Seriously though since roughly around the 2003ish Disney began to loos much of the imagination and innovation that made it so great. there willingness to swing for the fences and try new things is part of what gave the company its magic and that has been buried by a want from the company to play it safe. Moon Girl was doing some really unique animation by making the sound a big part of the show and animation. The representation as well was being done so well not just for the LGBTQ community but POC as well. Main character Lunella being a girl who is interested in STEM and uses math along with science to help solve a lot of the problems she faces in the series. young girls being into STEM is still not something you see a lot in kide media, never mind as a main character. It is so frustrating that a show with all of this is getting treated so poorly.

It is such a beautiful episode, cannot recommend enough for anyone interested to seek it out themselves. Vera describes all the important plot points, but seeing it play out hits different. Not only is it an important message, but the way it's presented for the show's younger demographic is very thoughtful. Not subtext, but clear, straightforward text, making a real, painful subject approachable without diminishing it. An earnest, well-crafted story sorely needed for all kids, but for trans kids especially. Also the art and animation are just beautiful, wow. The show's art style didn't grab me from the posters, but after this episode, I'm sold. There's way more to it than I was expecting, and it gives me early 2000s cartoon vibes. Strong comic book influence, great use of color, dynamic shot composition. ESPECIALLY in the sequence where the team breaks out. And with the fun video game references to boot?? Immaculate. ...Which of course adds insult to injury for Disney not letting it air. I don't believe for a second that the reason isn't connected to the episode's directly trans story. And yet, undeniably it had to get approval multiple times over the course of development. Letting the crew go through months of hard work just to pull the rug out beneath their feet at the end? Unprofessional is putting it lightly, but disrespectful is exactly it. Disney are cowards, and they're a disgrace.

I wonder how much of this whole thing is marketing. Because this went through the roof, especially within the community. And I wonder how many people knew about this show prior to this outcry. I didn't, personally. So how much of this decision was "before we air the trans episode, we rile up all the trans people to the show?" Because in the end, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Doesn't mean I'm agreeing with their methods, especially if the episode stays cut, because heck, that's one huge cake of an episode children, especially trans children, deserve.

It sounds like the story is that when he was younger, he would abruptly attempt physical intimacy, be rejected, and when he was explicitly rejected he would stop. Because he stops when he's explicitly rejected, he believes what he's doing is okay, and that anything which is not explicitly rejected is consensual. As an older more famous man, he started identifying and creating situations where women wouldn't reject his advances. I would describe the connections he formed with fans, offering to repeatedly meet up with them before initiating intimacy, as grooming. Neil Gaiman is not stupid. He may not have understood that what he was doing was morally wrong, I don't know what his beliefs about consent genuinely are, but he is intelligent enough to understand the power dynamics he was creating. I don't think these situations came about by accident.

I am genuinely surprised that the antagonist's name is Greer. This is the name of a prominent TERF. I'd have thought that Disney Legal or S&P would have objected to this, and it's a *very* small change to make. Did Disney really not take issue with it? Or did they actually not do a pass on the script for the episode? Neither option seems likely to me.
