For 2021, The 30th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog should definitely bring back the chao garden. For years people have practically begged and begged for chao to return in it's proper form, and not just a camo or background reference. It's been nearly 20 full years since sonic adventure 2 which was the last game with a proper chao garden, they have teased and teased us with chao animations, hints and little nods recently, the fanbase have practically mastered the chao raising skills and is ready to raise them in a modern game on next-gen with all new features, breeding, stats and more. Lastly, people actually enjoy the sa2 story with sonic and shadow being rivals and everybody hunting for the emeralds to either save or destroy the world, with a plot twist of gerald robotnik and everybody becoming a team to stop the ark station from crashing into earth. Good. It's still one of the hottest sonic topics even today and even myself would give up on everything sonic if the next game features no chao, and that's not a joke... Who agrees? Should sega make a sonic adventure 3 with new story, heroes and villains, next gen graphics and a whole new chao garden? :)

The entire 2nd half of Sonic's Career has been that listening to Critics who were never going to like the series. Iizuka & Sega of America constantly alienate actual fans & they don't care about Japanese Fans either. Cream has been absent from the series since Sonic Generations despite her being within the Top 3 most popular characters for the Sonic Series in Japan. The series treated itself like a joke for 10 full years because of those blasted critics who wanted the series to feel like a silly animal cartoon. The Just Sonic mentality was always a mistake & it only became the new normal because of those same critics.

The chao garden would be a great way to implement Cream and Cheese as a gameplay style. She could feature a slower more methodical gameplay style where she takes chao along with her to help her fight off baddies, and uses her flight and their numbers to solve puzzles. I could see it as a Pseudo pikmin spin off title, actually. Have Cream and Cheese enlist chao around the world to help them out, with them collecting small animals, fruit, and chaos drives throughout the level while completing objectives. Then, at the end of it all, they would head back to a HUB world styled chao garden where you could use all of your resources to individually and accurately level up each chao from a menu screen. Chao breeding would still be a thing, with stats functioning similarly to SA2 with a lot more polish. The chao racing and karate would still be prevalent as minigames with online functions. Chao could develop a broad range of movesets for chao karate based on their particular evolutions and past lives/experiences, and you could customize those movesets with a power/speed/technical move. Chao would be given one of those three commands, then clash with the other in a rock, paper, scissors sort of engagement. As for chao racing, you could be given a sort of clicker to get your chao's attention, and give them specific commands in the heat of the race (ie: take this harder-to-complete shortcut to get ahead of the competition, fly over this gap instead of trying to swim across, etc.) These components would offer a lot of value to the game, but wouldn't be the major experience. Instead, the major experience would be the pikmin-styled cream and chao gameplay with co-op potential via your friends and their chao in certain challenge missions.

Good video! I'd like to mention some things, though: Like many others, I'm in full support of a re-implementation of the Chao gardens in a future potential Adventure 3 title. I've spent many years playing and re-playing activities there, so much so in-fact that I've actually got a full garden of 24 uniquely maxed All-S Chao. With that said, there are some things that I think Sonic Team needs to be critically aware of going forward if they choose to bring the gardens back. First and most importantly, the stat boost glitch needs to be mentioned. After years of grinding through the Chao gardens time and time again, I can say with 110% certainty that, if not for that glitch just so happening to have been discovered, being as convenient as it is, there's no way I or many other fervent Chao fans would have spent as much time as we have in the gardens. That glitch was a _life saver_ when it came to raising stats. With that in mind, I want to make my position very clear that if ever there were a modern inclusion of Chao gardens, the stat boost glitch would *need* to come back as well -- not as a bug, but as a feature. If anyone were to ever hope to fully max out a Chao -- much less an entire garden of 24 of them -- that glitch is a *must.* Second, I do believe I had heard from reputable sources in the past (Chao Island forums, perhaps? I can't quite remember) that online compatibility for the original Sonic Adventure 2: Battle title on Gamecube was actually intended, and actually partially developed, but was ultimately scrapped due to time constraints on the release of the game. Much like with Phantasy Star Online for the same system, it'd have been _siiiick_ had they managed to make certain facets of Chao raising online-compatible. I think that if Chao are ever re-included in a future game, online features would be a given, especially in today's day and age. Third, I absolutely agree about more Chao minigames being necessary. That's not to say that I want racing and karate scrapped or overhauled into something completely unrecognizable as to what they were before, but honestly, I just want _more_ of them. More race tracks, more interactive capability with karate, more progressive modes, more multiplayer flexibility, and, of course, more minigames in general. What they had with SA2 and SA2B was going perfectly in the right track -- one of the things I'm most afraid of, should Chao ever make a comeback, is that Sonic Team drastically changes something integral to the OG Chao formula, trying to fix something that was never broken in the first place (significantly changing Chaos' pre-existing appearance, scrapping certain neutrality and/or stat alignments in favor of something else, etc). For me personally, I just want what we had before, but maybe with online capabilities and some of the most popular features from current mods and the like. (A day/night/weather cycle in the gardens would be sweeeet.) Anyway, yeah. Just wanted to give my two cents here. As much as I want Sonic Team to bring the little guys back and do the earlier games justice, part of me is just really scared that they're going to botch something that didn't need to be tampered with in the first place. Aside from that though, then yeah, bring on the Chao, baby 8)

Yeah I’ve definitely stopped Sonic and tried moving him around in 3D, it doesn’t feel very great. The gameplay is more about steering him as he goes forwards rather than fully controlling him in 3D.

Possible Chao Mini Games: Rthythm game! Your Chao and the character you're playing as are playing instruments, you get to control your character and an AI plays your Chao. Your Chao gets better from going to school. A card game, something like Go Fish or Uno, where you play against your Chao (up to 3 from the garden). Also based on schooling. Art, you doodle something, your Chao learns it. Randomly your Chao will draw those pieces on the ground like how they did in SA2. (Big meme potential too) Hide'n Go Seek, Chao can hide in more places the higher their stats are. You can hide too, if your Chao finds you they get a big boost in happiness. If they can't find you, they suffer a small, easily reversible hero/dark change. How long they play is based on stamina.

A 3D Chao mobile game would be awesome! Imagine it being like pokemon go, you can choose one of these characters as your "Chao guardian". Male characters being Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Silver! Female characters being Amy, Cream, Tikal, Rouge, and Blaze! You choose a starter egg at beginning of app neutral Chao egg (white and yellow egg with blue dots), hero egg (a white egg with blue spots), or dark egg (dark reddish egg with black spots), and as you travel your Chao can find rings (like how Pokemon find candy when following you on map in pogo), you may use the rings in black market section in the app to get fruits which will increase stats, and the higher stamina your Chao has the more it'll travel with you 👌, toys (for your Chao to play with in AR mode), and accessories like clothes such as hats bows, bow ties, or glasses! Using rings at a "ring well" (similar to PokeStop) you can have a 50% chance to change name, colors of chao body, also in app purchases can get you to change it's name

I completely agree with you about wanting to see the Chao Garden make a comeback in the Sonic games. However, the Chao Garden (and the Chao in general) are NOT pointless - at least not in Sonic Adventure 1, anyway. In Sonic Adventure 1, the main antagonist (other than Eggman, obviously) is Chaos and Chaos is a mutated Chao. Furthermore, the ONLY reason why Chaos stopped being evil at the end of Sonic Adventure 1 was because he realised that humans were treating the Chao with love and kindness. The Chao were responsible for Chaos's redemption at the end of Sonic Adventure 1, so the Chao are literally essential to the plot of Sonic Adventure 1.

6:56 oh my god this brought back memories, Ajax was the name of one of the most powerful chao on me and my siblings' shared sa2 file back when we had a gamecube. he was also a white dark chao. unfortunately after my brother left the disk out on our brick fireplace it got scratched up and we couldnt play the game anymore, so we never saw any of our chao again.

I think Choa make the game have so much more replay value. Every sonic game wants you to replay levels ang get better at them, but if there is nothing to do except practice levels they will get boring. The choa creat a positive feed back loop. Finish a few missions, go to the garden, level up your Choa, go do more missions, get more rings and items to level up your choa. Right now you just play levels over and your only reward is a higher score. It just makes so much sense that playing the game should be rewarded. Not to mention, this seems like streamer gold, raise choa, discover secret types, customize them, name them, then enter them in a tournament against your friends. Get viewers hyped, make training montages, create your own pro wresting style lore. This seems like such a massive missed opportunity on Segas part to not do this. Choa could be bigger then sonic if they played their cards right.

I think a mobile game would be the most realistic, and possibly the most enjoyable option! Ideally, there’d be a Steam version with cross-compatibility, but even if not, I could see the mobile game having tons of fun minigames from across the series in order to get animals and rings, from Big’s fishing to Blue Spheres to Mean Bean Machine! They could add a catalog of all the items for completionists and have seasonal items too!

I actually think it would have been a bit cute if they added Chao to sonic forces, so after you finish saving the world you need to bring it together, you found no ability to help the resistance restore the world. So you go around levels and notice something different, there was a Chao with a key, this opens up Chao garden and you go around places instead of breading chao, your basically doing animal rescue, but chao, (chao rescue/resoration) and like you said, but its with the chao you bond with the most. maybe even with multiple chaos. (imagine bonding with an army of Chao and just attacking the bosses who are expecting just you, but they see a sea of Chao ready to attack.)

Having the Chao's being involved in levels as you mentionned would be pretty neat. Having them being non present in normal stages makes them game feel like it's divided into 2 segments, the main game and the Chao Garde. Making the Chao Garden more integrated into the game and less forced upon you for a ''reward'' to break rare boxes and slow the gameplay by a lot would also help in making people be less annoyed at this part of the game. Chao Drives and animals could also be upgraded, they should hold a way greater limit and could be used in X10 or X100 quantity or anything to make things faster, Stamina is also the worst damn stat to raise so any help towards that would be welcome. A Sonic Adventure style game where every characters have their own Chao like Cream and seeing the Chao's grow along the story would be a good way to reintroduce Chao's. Any small scale story with the Chao's as it''s center point would be good, could be a little RPG or a Roguelike where our Chao changes to modify it's moveset. Chao's have the highest wasted potential in the Sonic franchise. With the new additions to the series, Wisps could be used either as power up items in races or to further customize Chao's. Black Arms would also be a good way to customize them with a space theme.

I think one solution could be to greatly expand the Chao gameplay so it effectively becomes its own game, something that is addictive and fun but simpler to build than regular Sonic levels - perhaps a roguelike dungeon crawler? The existence of an ever-changing "chaos dungeon" fits in well with Sonic's world's aesthetic and lore. Maybe you could find Chaos Emeralds in there... I like the idea of bringing the Chao along with you into levels, but instead of just carrying stuff (which shouldn't really be a core mechanic in a Sonic game to begin with), what if Sonic and his allies could absorb their Chao temporarily like the Wisps to boost their abilities? Maybe the best use of it would be to integrate it with the Boost formula and have the Chao's stats impact the properties of the Boost - speed makes it faster, strength lets it break through more enemies, flight can make it easier to control, and climbing/swimming could improve its endurance/recharge speed.

I'd rather they DIDN'T make it a mobile game because while I admit mobile games can still be full game experiences, they usually aren't because they're always held back by some form of heavy monetisation. That being said, I absolutely wouldn't be able to deny playing it what with my deep connection to the Chao Garden and how even today I still revisit it with the same joy. Ultimately though, I really do hope they work hard to add it to the next main game. Not only would it please fans but it'd truly prolong the length and relevancy with actual meaningful gameplay padding. While unlocking new Avatar costumes in Sonic Forces was nice, I didn't care nearly as more for it and still just blasted through the game for the sake of completing it. Had it a fully realise Chao Garden instead? I'd likely still be playing that shit today and even be softer on the game for it's shallow main gameplay.

Man i spent so many hours in SA1 building up rings and animals for my chao babies Its a big reason why i want a remaster of SA1 and 2. Chao gardens really encourage replaying levels to get items for them. The fact we havent had 1 since sonic advanced is CRAZY.

Given that I've been replaying the Sonic Adventure series on my channel, I'm genuinely happy to see you talking about this again. The Chao Garden offers by far one of the best replay value features in all of video games. The creatures are truly lovable, and the system is so intricate and beautiful. While seeing this in any format would be nice, my preference is not for mobile, but an official game. Honestly, I'd like to see SEGA give the Chao Garden the same treatment that Chao World Extended did for SA2, but either way, I'd just like to see our favorite adorable creatures return to the game and done right as well with an intricate and in-depth system providing hours of fun and replay value. Can you imagine online Chao Races in a current day official Sonic game?! Given the Adventure influence we've been seeing in Frontiers, maybe that day isn't too far away. Let's hope for the best!

Incorporating your Chao into actual main gameplay would be so cool. Like depending on their stats/evolution alignment, they would have a different playstyle. Power Chao would attack nearby enemies, while flying Chao could fly around your vicinity, picking up rings and other collectibles, etc. They could help find secrets and alternate routes. Very cool stuff. Chaos have so much potential, and I really hope Sega realizes how many of their Sonic fans want the Chao Garden gameplay back.

If anything I would absolutely recommend them using the same format they use for Phantasy Star Online 2 in both the regular and NG versions where you get the full force of a paid game for free, but you can also have the option to go Primium if you wish, because there are people that have played PSO2 bsae for years without spending a dime. And why stop there? From what I know, they can even implement a import feature to have your Chao be a MAG form for your character by importing it's form in a transformation device for base PSO2 and a form for NG. Back in PSO for the Xbox I had, I saw so many versions of the Sato (it looked like a cat) MAG in so many colors, so why not the same logic in PSO2 to only show how you raised your little buddy, but bring'em while you're fighting monsters?

I totally agree that they should make another game with the Chao Garden, I practically raised Chao my entire life! It's my favorite feature in the Sonic Adventure series! I agree that they should make more features for the Chao besides racing and karate, but I don't really care for the feature that allows us to control them, since they're supposed to be virtual pets and have minds of their own, so controlling them would defeat the purpose. While I like the idea of a Chao following you around when you're on a stage, because of Cream the Rabbit's existence I can't completely get behind the idea. Since the Chao would no doubt do things that Cheese can do, and at that point, all you got going at that point is a "Anything you can do, I can do better" scenario. Lastly, I don't think that they necessarily have to make another Sonic Adventure game to have the Chao Garden feature. They just have to make a Sonic game with an open world feature, with a Chao Garden as an optional location. If Sonic Team needs any ideas, my brother and I would be more than happy to help. 🤭

One game I've never played in the Sonic series would be Heroes, and I was really surprised that it never added a Chao garden to be improved on from SA2's, and that's probably why I haven't touched a Sonic game since SA2, since I had only played SA1 and 2 only lol. Hell even 06 could've redeemed itself somewhat if it had a proper Chao garden at the very least.

When you comment on changing the appearance to "personal taste", I disagree, one of the things that "caught" me about the chaos was the feeling of "surprise, or reward", I liked that lack of "control". If a chao was born with a cool face that you liked it was all a satisfaction, the same applies to the "visible statistics" of the gamecube version, the lack of "linear progression" that the dreamcast version had, that lack of transparency, that lack of "control", that "chaos" gave him a touch of uncertainty that again, took him out of the monotony and played with your expectations and imagination. If a new chao garden comes out I would like them to keep that, "BUT" with something even more chaotic and unpredictable to calculate, because committed players always end up calculating those things in detail and spreading them on the internet. Online would be excellent. Humble opinion;), God help us with this, so many years have passed

the Generation remake seems like it would be perfect for a new Chao Garden, since we have Sonic and Shadow both playable, which is a system the chao garden depends on.

it would be neat if we got a stand-alone Chao Garden game for PC and Mobile (maybe Called Chao Home or something) and then every game had little chao gardens that connect back to it like some kind of hub. you could end up with game specific eggs and accessories that way.

Instead of just adding just one new alignment, why not make it another pair of alignments that can overlap with Hero/Dark? Effectively this could make it work like D&D's alignment system, where you would triple the number of total alignments from SA2's garden.

I agree; it would make an excellent mobile game. I never know about the Chao. I guess it was because they were so short-lived in the franchise. Make a video one day in the future about Doctor Eggman! I would love to learn more about him lol. He transforms animals into robots right? I always wondered what the animals inside the capsule at the end of sonic 2 are there for. I’ve just purchased the Gamecube version again, this is by far my favourite sonic game, not only is the gameplay fun (I hate boost games with a passion) but the chao garden was so amazing, I could play the PS3 version but there was a port issue with the two tone chao so I’d rather play the gc version again

I must be the only Sonic fan who vastly prefers the Adventure formula over any other sonic game play style...and yet doesn't really care at all about the Chao Garden. I never used it. it just seemed kinda boring to me. I don't mind if it's brought back, I don't want to deny anyone else of a fun time they enjoy, but personally I honestly don't care either way if it is or isn't....

Sega and Sonic Team had MANY years to bring the Chao IP to the world with their own game but they never ever did and lost so much because of it. Not to mention its all about Sonic nowadays and even then they still couldn't get Sonic right save a very few games so them making a Chao game in this day and age I would have doubts if it would be good at all. But hey hopefully one day we will all get surprised eh?
