I get it ...... But Filing Taxes and Paying Taxes are two different things [ At least for me it is]. You started by asking this question - "Why we have to file the return when tax has been already paid by the employer via TDS"? And then you went ahead with an explanation [at least sounded like an explanation/answer to your own question] comparing numbers of India and US; which doesn't seem to be the right answer to your question. For sure it a great answer to the question like "Why we should Pay the Tax"

Why we should pay the tax when only about 1% of the population actually pay tax and that too because it is deducted from their source by employer. Guess what there are much larger group of people should fall under taxpayer bracket but simply dont pay because govt system fails to identify and enforce them to tax compliant. So ultimately those 1% taxpayers dont get anything in return. As a regular taxpayer I can say the system is only tighten for the one who already pay tax and useless to identify the non compliant. Moreover I dont feel govt has any good intentions for the wellbeing of its taxpayer class specially private sector because not a votebank margin. Such a shame.
