A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in.
Both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, DEAR EVAN HANSEN is a new American musical about life and the way we live it.

Every single time I sing this song, I sing this part. I mean, obviously. It’s part of the song. Anyway, I sing it, and my dad overhears the part, and he’s like, “Didn’t you literally just say that you have nothing to say?” And I’m like, “I SANG it. Anyway, didn’t you say you had to do something that isn’t annoying?” Savage.

Annalise Wedewer YO! I’m an extrovert... but I’m an extrovert who thinks really hard when alone and loves time to reflect on life. So an ambivert, I guess? Lately though, it seems I can only have solid friendships with introverts, because all the extroverts that I think are awesome and try to talk to tend to get overwhelmed by me. Really fast, too. Because I’m random and very deep (I’ve been told)? ANYWAY! People like you are literally awesome and refresh me so much. Yeah, I do appreciate being the life of the party sometimes... but when the other people there don’t really want to contemplate the meaning behind things or spend hours chatting about complex life questions, the introverts are always ready to step in. Like, always. And it makes me so happy that you and people like you exist on this earth, because y’all have the best ideas and the best things to say. Love you all. 💞
@ferrin6326

@@sophiaredwood5825 usually introverts form families where an extrovert adopts them all. This is usually how friend groups in elementary schools form. A really weird extrovert or two adopt(s) a bunch of introverts and it just kinda happens. Sometimes extroverts bring random extroverts into the group though, and if the wrong kind of extrovert worms their way in and refuses to leave, this special bond can be broken. So yeah. Forgive my ramble, internet stranger... Also, you're more likely to find introverts online than anywhere else because lots of us get really anxious in social situations with unfamiliar people. Ah, I'm rambling again. But yes, if you would comment something you want to discuss in an intellectual conversation, I can do so while effectively quoting memes
@sophiaredwood5825
@sophiaredwood5825 4 жыл бұрын
Annalise Wedewer Woah, mind blown, I literally just realized that that is exactly how my friend group formed. And it makes perfect sense! Aaa!! Also, don’t apologize for rambling. I’m a writer by nature, I read and write without stopping so I’ve surely burdened many who try to read my long comments 😂 but I will usually never be bothered by a long comment to read. ESPECIALLY if it’s sincere and interesting. So you’re perfectly fine 😊 As for speaking intellectually? Hmm, lately I resort to thought-provoking questions or hypothetical situations (some stupidly fun, others actually super interesting)... Like... “If all of a sudden you met your future child and they were your age because of some time-related thing, and they knew you were their (younger) parent, how do you think the conversation would go? Any interests you think you both would have? How would your friends react if the same thing happened to them?” Also stuff like, “What is a donut without a hole?” or “Why is hot chocolate called what it is despite its actual temperature?” and stuff to that effect, haha. I also tend to think a lot about people and interactions and identity and stuff but that could be a bit long 😂
@ferrin6326
@ferrin6326 4 жыл бұрын
@@sophiaredwood5825 A donut without a hole is still a donut. They come in all different shapes and sizes, but holes made them easiest to cook so it's the most common and well known type. Hot chocolate is called so despite its temperature because... I don't really know, haha. It was hot originally, so it is always hot chocolate. But then, why don't other things not change names in relativity to temperature? Hot cookie, cookie, cold cookie, frozen cookie. How does that stuff work? The English language is just one big "Well yes, but actually no."

“Step out, step out of the sun” “If you keep getting burned” This line is my single favorite line in songwriting. A beautiful analogy that exactly represents anxiety. The sun, being the spotlight, is referring to being seen, to putting yourself out there. But what happens when no one responds to what you say, or when you find yourself in an awkward conversation, suddenly empty on words, struggling. There’s a point in time, after failing so much, you just never risk standing in the sun again. For why step into the sun if you keep getting burned?

I haven't had it as hard as Evan, but the first time I listened to this musical, I sobbed. I've never had suicidal tendencies, but I have suffered from anxiety my entire life. I've experienced the crippling loneliness that feels like no one would notice if you vanished into thin air. When I heard this, I couldn't believe it. I felt so seen. And it helped me realize I matter just as much as everyone else. Thank you, Dear Evan Hansen.

Maybe add autism to that. With the slight difference that in my case The Mistake isn't just something I imagine, it's something people have deigned to scream at me for my entire fucking live and then somehow they are surprised almost 70% of autistic people have social anxiety as well? Like, I could probably analyze my entire life into this song, but maybe that should be reserved for English class.

'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass I'm waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass I'm waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? We start with stars in our eyes We start believing that we belong But every sun doesn't rise And no one tells you where you went wrong Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned, because you've learned On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass Waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass Waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving? I never picked up on the thought that Evan's broken arm was due to a failed suicide attempt. This really puts things in perspective. He's socially awkward, he attempts to fall and crash, but it fails. He follows the suggestion to write himself mail and it then gets taken as a suicide note when one actually commits suicide. His therapy for the parents turns his own life around.

I’ve got ASD I’m in college now. I’ve found a circle of people to call my genuine friends and I’ve never been surer of that in my life. Hearing this for the first time and this gave me flashbacks to middle and high school when I was too afraid to connect, too busy wallowing in my own self-pity, afraid my differences only inconvenienced those around me or made them uncomfortable. Now I’ve grown and I’ll always be grateful for that.

When you have seen the show and the verse, "When you're falling in a forest, and there's nobody around, do you ever really crash, or even make a sound." Has so much more meaning, and it kills you. **Spoiler** Evan tries to kill himself prior to the start of the show by climbing a tree and letting himself fall to the ground, hence the cast.

** ADDITIONAL WARNING FOR MORE MAJOR SPOILER TALK ** One of the things I love most about the book of this show is that there are all these little subtle details that make the emotional moments hit even harder... like the fact that it's not that Evan consciously or actively jumped from the tree. And the fact that he spends right up until the end of the show in denial to even *himself* that it wasn't just an accident. The implication is that he really did start off climbing up the tree just for something to do (or at least convincing himself that was the case), and at some point along the way it got a little trickier to climb, and instead of keeping going or climbing back down he just kind of... let go... gave up. And, for me at least, that kind of resigned passiveness in it hits hard. Although I've thankfully never been suicidal myself, I've definitely had my fair share of mental health issues that I've spent a LONG time being in a whole lot of denial about, and I can't help but think that if I ever had reached that point.. that's probably more along the lines of how it might have come out for me too. Something where it could be easy to be in denial about it even having *been* what it actually was, and something that could be easily passed off as "nah, it was an accident". Aaanyway, sorry that just got awkwardly personal! But the point is, yeah... the particular way it's all revealed is SO well done and honest and gutting. And you don't even realize until after it's revealed how much the show has been building up to that moment, either!

Dear Evan Hansen, Thank you. You have helped me more that you could know. And I know you're just a character from a musical show/book but you really are something. You feel real. Your story feels real. Your troubles feel real. Because I can relate. Watching this movie and listening to this soundtrack has made me realise I am not alone. There are kids like me that struggle everyday and there's kids like Connor who are unseen. We go unnoticed but that doesn't mean we aren't there. We aren't alone. Non of us. No one should have to suffer in silence because we exist, and we will get the help we need. We will see the light again. We will be found. Thank you Evan Hansen For everything.

This is honestly what it feels like for me sometime when I try to interact with people. I have anxiety in general and a huge part of that is social anxiety and even though I have a lot of friends, I realize most of them prefer to talk to someone else more than they like to talk to me. This feels like when I'm trying to be heard over the others. I know no one realizes it but they still ignore me sometimes, and it still hurts.

LYRICS: I've learned to slam on the brake Before I even turn the key Before I make the mistake Before I lead with the worst of me Give them no reason to stare No slipping up if you slip away So I got nothing to share No, I got nothing to say Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned, because you've learned On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? It's like I never made a sound Will I ever make a sound? On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass Waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass Waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? I love that Hamilton has become such a gateway drug for so many new musical theater nerds! :'D Even as someone who's been a lifelong musical theater lover, I'll admit that after the amazing 2006-2009 years (where we got Spring Awakening, In the Heights, Next to Normal, the Gypsy and HAIR revivals, etc.), I'd hit a bit of a slump with the Broadway scene. Other than maybe Book of Mormon, there just wasn't much I fell in love with between about 2010 and 2015. Hedwig and the Angry Inch was actually the one that started pulling me back in, but then Hamilton sealed the deal, and with Waitress and the Color Purple and Spring Awakening revivals last year, and DEH this year, I'm quite sure we've hit a new wave of amazing Broadway years!

If you ever find yourself waving through a window, just remember: No one deserves to be forgotten, no one deserves to fade away, no one should come and go and have no one know they were ever even here, no one should flicker out or have any doubt that it matters that they are here. Even if you’ve always been that barely in the background kind of guy, you still matter. Even if you’re somebody who can’t escape the feeling that the world’s passed you by, you still matter. If you never getting around to doing some remarkable thing, that doesn’t mean that you’re not worth remembering. Because even when the dark comes crashing through, when you need a friend to carry you, when you’re broken on the ground, you will be found. So let the sun com streaming in, cause you’ll reach up and you’re rise again. Lift your head, and look around. You will be found

The "Falling in a forest part" really makes me think of someone with suicidal thought, ready to jump off a building (The whole falling in a forest), question if they have, or ever make a sound either way, feeling like no one cares enough about them as up to this point they feel like no one hears them, and no one is waving back at them. But right as they're about to it, someone intervenes and stops them, the first time they managed to make a sound, the first time someone waved back at them, hence the full sentence finally being said "Is anybody waving back at me" Idk, it's probably not what it's all about, but this is my headcannon and I like it!

3 years later and I read this from the song: “I’m tap, tap, tapping on the glass!” - I’m asking for help. “Can anybody hear me?” - Is nobody gonna help me? “Watching people pass.” - Nobody is helping me... “Is anybody waving back at me?” - Is anybody trying to help me or even bothers?! “Do you ever really crash or even make a sound?” - Is what I’m saying... Even heard? Is anybody gonna stop and help me?! I loved this song because I felt that way. “Waving Through A Window” is a beautiful song and I’m grateful to have it.

*SAD STORY TIME* (it's related to this song, don't worry) So... even though this happened a year ago, it's still rough to talk about... here goes nothing: Basically, I went to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp last year, and met this incredible lad. His name was Austin. I doubt he's even still living. Let me explain. During the time we were there, he told me about his life, and how it was absolute SHIT. Like, it was terrible, honestly. He attempted suicide multiple times, and did once at the camp (I stopped him tho). But the main point for this comment was that he showed me this song and sang it to me for practice, for it really resonated with him. A LOT. Especially the bridge, where Evan Hanson talks about his suicide attempt and how nobody cared. It was the same with Austin. My name is Evan, so it reminded him of his favorite song from his favorite musical: *Waving Through A Window, Dear Evan Hanson*. I gave him my number, but to this day, he hasn't called. Or maybe it was one of those various random number calls that I've grown to immediately deny out of instinct. I have PTSD from my friends attempting suicide and me being the person to stop them... Welp, I'm just glad that I finally got that off of my chest. Thank you to anyone who cares enough to even read this... anyways... *stay glad my lad.*

" On the outside always looking in, will I ever be more than I' ve always been" is the line that resonates so much with me. I 've never lived my life according to society's standards. I 've struggled with crippling anxiety, depression and often times have felt I m just not where I should be in life. I am just a bit different compared to others... when society and culture tell you where you should be in life by a by a certain age and that I m on the "outside looking in" and watching everyone else live a normal life and achieve happiness. I m in a better place than I used to be thankfully but this song really hits home for me. I just love it.

Yep, that part (and the fact that they recall it at multiple points throughout the show) becomes extra heartbreaking when you listen back to it after having seen the full show

[EVAN] I've learned to slam on the brake Before I even turn the key Before I make the mistake Before I lead with the worst of me Give them no reason to stare No slippin' up if you slip away So I got nothing to share No, I got nothing to say Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned, because you've learned On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? It's like I never made a sound Will I ever make a sound? On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass Waving through a window, oh I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass Waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? (Ooh) Is anybody waving? Waving, waving, whoa-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh

Dear Evan Hansen, This month, I will have been a year clean from self-harm. You can do it. You are not obligated to take all of your friend's burdens on yourself while trying to balance your own life. Your friends will not benefit from you being unhealthy. Help them in ways you can afford. Help each other through things. Vent to your friends. If they are truly your friends, they will listen. Your problems are just as valid as theirs. You don't need to prove that you aren't okay. I love you for who you are. You are a beautiful human being. I can't afford therapy anymore, but my friends have helped me through tough times more than any therapist ever could. People care about you, even if you haven't met them yet. Sincerely, Me (edit: 2 years!! still going strong, you can do it!)
