I get that it's not the same and that it's hard to suspend disbelief about him being the age of a high schooler- but for me it was worth having Ben Platt in it for his incredible vocals and seriously powerful acting. And I can understand frustrations when comparing it to the original- but as someone who isn't comparing it to anything, doesn't want to watch an illegal recording, and can't afford Broadway, this made the show accessible to me- and I found it really deeply moving. @cammm0632 жыл бұрын
The issues that most people (including myself) have with the movie mainly have to do with Ben Platt. He’s a good performer, a great singer and a fine actor, but he’s way too old to play Evan. It’s not even just that it doesn’t feel believable, but that you have to highlight how young and naive Evan is for the audience to feel sympathetic. Another issue is why Platt was cast in the film. People who work on the film have said that they were going to cast a younger actor to play Evan, but that they just couldn’t get rid of him. That seems a little sketchy when you realize that Platt’s father was the producer. That’s called nepotism, and it’s not cool. The vocals are also autotuned to no end. Plus, it butchers the original story to an insane degree, adding things that mess up the nuance of the story and taking away things that are almost essential. I’m not here to tell you to dislike the movie. In fact, I’m glad you like the movie, because our world is full of too much negativity, so it’s nice to hear some positive things. I’m just letting you know why some people have issues with the film.
@luna-mo3ol Жыл бұрын
@@cammm063 Honestly he's not too old to play the character though. I think what people need to realize in regards to that is there are actually high schoolers who look like this, as in, way older than they are. I'm a senior in high school, and we definitely have some students even younger than me who don't look like high schoolers. So I think that criticism in particular falls flat because it's just not true. I think the real issue is not how old he is but just how they made him look in the film. They must've put a lot of heavy makeup on him or something, that mixed with the hairstyle. It just doesn't look flattering. It doesn't necessarily make him look too old, just not flattering. How he looked in the Netflix show The Politician (where he also played a high schooler) is how he should've looked in this film. That would've made it much better I think. Of course that wouldn't have gotten rid of the changes they made to the story or the weird direction and way some of the scenes were shot.
@cammm063 Жыл бұрын
@@luna-mo3ol i understand that argument. I’m a junior in high school (Evan’s age, actually) but everyone thinks I’m in like college or something. However, I still think the directors should’ve taken into consideration the fact that, if this were anyone but a high schooler, they would straight up be a terrible, irredeemable person. It’s called directorial discretion. We sympathize with Evan because he’s young and naive, and is trapped in these situations where he feels the only way to get out is to continue the lie, and that makes more sense if the character looks the part. A real life adult wouldn’t do that. And yeah, the makeup they used on him just made it worse. He literally looks like a forty-year-old. Even despite that, though, even if there were no makeup or prosthetics, if we’re looking directly at this guy (who’s real age is 29, btw) for two hours, we’re gonna notice that he’s older than the character he’s playing, making it much harder to sympathize with him. If they had just gotten a younger actor (or maybe just kept the show as it is- a stage show), I’d have a lot fewer problems.
@luna-mo3ol Жыл бұрын
@@cammm063 Again, he does look the part because there are genuinely 17/18 year olds who look like that. If you mean it would be easier to sympathize with him if he didn't have such a mature look (which some kids have), then that would make sense. Since of course, one usually would assume that more mature looking kids would also be more mature in general. It's also important to note that in Pitch Perfect, the first one, he was literally 18 in that film. And he looks basically the same then as he does now lol
@cammm063 Жыл бұрын
@@luna-mo3ol i think we’re making the exact same point but in differing ways and it’s getting confusing lol. yeah, if Evan looked less mature, i could sympathize with him a loooot more, because he would feel more innocent and like someone who would fall into this mistake. but the way it is now is making it difficult to do so. anyway, i hope you’re having a great day! god bless 👍

I don't understand why so many people are hating on this movie. Sure, Ben is a little old to be playing a teenager, but I thought that his portrayal of Evan made up for it. Maybe people dislike because they are mad about songs being cut, but I think that the movie had what it needed. I've listened to the cast recordings, as well as the bonus tracks, but I probably won't be able to see the play, at least not in the foreseeable future. I'm a little bit sad about the songs that they cut, but it's an adaptation. They wouldn't have been able to keep everything. Also, if you aren't a fan of the movie, why are you here? I've seen reviews hating this film, hating on Ben Platt because he doesn't look teen, and one review even said that he looked like a creep and anxiety doesn't even portrayed well, BUT I disagree. The film, though I feel like it's lacking something, but the scores were great, Ben's delivery was great, so powerful that he bring people to tears. He pass as a teen. Not all teenagers are wrinkle free or whatever. I'm so glad I've watched this film and discovered an underrated singer as well. Ben Platt is such a gem!

Why is everyone complaining about Ben Platt playing a teenager at the age of 27, when the dude who played Connor is only a year younger than Ben Platt

I just saw this movie for the first time last week. I never saw it on Broadway and the only song I had ever heard was You Are Not Alone but it was from a cover. I only knew Ben Platt from his song, Imagine (which I love). First, I never thought he looked too old. I had no problem believing he was a teenager. I know lots of people who look older than their age. Also, I think it is silly to hate on him for that because many adults play teens. Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Luke Perry and Gabrielle Carteris on 90210 were much older adults playing teens. I have watched this movie four times and can't stop listening to the score. It is incredible and Ben sings it so amazingly. Waving Through a Window and For Forever are my top favorites. Sincerely Me, was so funny and wonderfully entertaining. I love this movie and am so glad to have finally seen DEH. I recently watched a bunch of Ben's performances on Broadway and heard him sing in older interviews and I think his voice is even better now in the movie. I prefer the movie soundtrack to the Broadway one.

I loved the movie and "Evan's" voice is so good. I know it's the same actor from Broadway but it still doesn't mean his voice is any less beautiful. I actually cried a few times and said things like "Were was this when I had anxiety?" "That's how life is." and "It's just like my life...in a way." My anxiety wasn't as bad as Evan's but I still had it. I mean I didn't want to kill myself I still have anxiety today I just don't get a lot of attacks from it anymore. I get one every once in a while but before I'd get one like every two weeks.

This song resonates with me. To those experiencing Depressive Disorder with prominent anxiety.. Always looking in.. Trying to signal ie waving through a window... Feeling nobody waving bavk at u..Avoiding stressful situations ie Stepping out of sun with fear of getting burnt.. When falling in a forest ie the pitfall of Depression.. Suicide.. Nobody hears u even.. Isolation. This song captures all that perfectly I DON'T CARE what others think of the musical / film. I can relate well to it as someone who had been in that pitfall myself.. Fortunately my mum, and several others were there for me.. They understood at least when i 'fell in the Forest'.. This poor kid wanted someone to care for him.. Not to patronise him with a detachment as his mother does.. For her own ease.. None of this justifies fabricating based on Connors death mind you. But in a way initially he wanted to make Connors mum happy. Ultimately when through the lie he got attention he went on the web of lies.. However it came at a cost. It ended up worsening his internal turmoil.. Ultimately in the end his mother realises the isolation he goes through and turns to truly support him.. I too was a bit taken aback at the end initially.. But no this musical is more down to earth.. What adolescents should learn is even if no one surrounds u and cheer u. u should try and keep on at what ur best at. Evan could have got the same appreciation he did without lying to Connors parents and everybody telling about Apple trees and all.. He has good imagination.. And good writing skills.. He could have written an essay or article to a paper about suicide.. What drives ppl to it.. He could have started a blog with his friends.. Ppl do that nowadays.. He could have expresed how he was really feeling.. While ppl criticise social media cutting off ppl from emotions, there is also a trend that ppl are more freely expressing themselves and their experiences through platforms such as KZbin. Ppl create blogs.. Actors, singers, artists, come out with their Depression, Social Anxiety.. I wish the show encouraged young viewers in this respect.. For instance if it portrayed Evan in a dilemma of what to do, but instead of lying expreses his own experiences through a blog.. This show highlights the negative aspect of using social media to boost ur image.. If it had shown that the otherway round.. Being urself expressing urself.. And the long term benefits it has on ur well being than just being some 'popular image'.. Additionally the show also highlights a major flaw in school systems and parenting.. Schools should not favour a particular stereotype of students such as eg, 'Sporty', 'Studious' these two are mostly perceived to boost their image so they favour them.. But schooling should be catered on individuals.. Each and every student has unique talents. If students are neglected they either take it out on others by bullying like Connor or bottle themselves up in isolation like Evan.. Parents should stop comparing their children.. It is said not to undermine both the extremely 'bad' child like Connor as well as the 'too nice' child like Evan.. If Difficult temperamental kids like Connor get the Strong attachment they need they from parents will not be that harmful to othrrs. If kids with too easy temperament like Evan are ignored that they don't 'mind' anything they are likely one day to culminate in Depression due to overbearing.. Such kids express emotions more subtely. It's a responsibility of parents to be aware of any hidden danger signs and reinforce proper communication with them from start. These kids are far High in risk of Depression if not properly understood. In the film Encanto, Louisa is an example for this. The song Surface pressure highlights this. So yeah i totally appreciate the awareness this show / movie brings. But at the same time if the underlying factors beneath the tip of the iceberg and alternate usages of media to be genuine and express urself rather than impress others is highlighted it would have been in level of Supremacy.

I've learned to slam on the brake Before I even turn the key Before I make the mistake Before I lead with the worst of me Give them no reason to stare No slipping up if you slip away So I got nothing to share No, I got nothing to say Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned, because you've learned On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass I'm waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass I'm waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? We start with stars in our eyes We start believing that we belong But every sun doesn't rise And no one tells you where you went wrong Step out, step out of the sun If you keep getting burned Step out, step out of the sun Because you've learned, because you've learned On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass Waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass Waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? Did I even make a sound? The only people saying it's a bad movie are those who are jealous Ben got to star in a huge film that his producer dad made happen. But too bad; he won the Tony absent of his father's influence so he wanted to star in the film adaptation. And he got to. Doesn't make it a bad movie but according to the Internet, it does.
