Thank you so much for this series. I was just Chrismated into the Orthodox Church this past Sunday, and your series has helped me to better understand the Orthodox Church's teachings regarding death and afterlife issues. My husband passed away after an agonizing six-year battle with colon cancer. He suffered intensely at the end of his life. There came a point when he was receiving hospice care, and we had moved a hospital bed to our home. He was literally trying to climb out the hospital bed at the end because they wouldn't give him morphine to get the pain under control. I truly believe this was because he was on Tennessee's government health care insurance because he had a pre-existing condition. They would not pay to give him the medication. This experience was absolutely horrible. I finally had to insist that he be taken to a hospital to get the pain under control. He slipped into a coma as soon as he entered the hospital and passed away two days later. I truly believe that too much was done to prolong his life. I didn't realize that so many organs could be removed from a person's body and that they could still live. After his death, I had erroneously adopted two of the views you mention in the videos: I wanted to just go to sleep and not wake up or I wanted to die a sudden death. I think I adopted these views because of fear of what I had witnessed my husband experience. I know now that what I need to do is prepare for death so that when it comes I will be ready. I really appreciate your comments at the end of the series regarding confession. I now have a deeper appreciation for this sacrament. Thank you again for this series. I have watched it several times. Thank you for your sensitive way of handling these issues. Your messages have been a blessing to my life.

This is an example of the damage trump and sessions have done with the complete removal of pain management from healthcare. Even terminal patients can't obtain pain relief! This is barbaric and cruel and was only done to fuel the illegal drug trade. Trump, Soros, Gates, Pelosi, Biden and Harris, Obama etc. All are elite sociopaths and Sadists and are certainly going to Hell. I'm so sorry this happened to your husband, may he enjoy the eternal bliss of God's love 💗💗💗💗

First off, Thank you, Fr. Jeremy for this series. You don't get information like this on a Parish level and I have heard countless different answers, even within the Orthodox Church, which conflict with one another. Your explanations were canonical, as far as I can tell , and made a lot of sense.....until you got to the end. If I am understanding you correctly, it seems as though God is giving both the the Righteous and the Unrighteous Eternal Life with new glorified and deathless, indestructible bodies. The only difference is that the Unrighteous will be separated from the Righteous and alienated from God. But if that wasn't what they wanted in the first place, how would that be torment or suffering to them when they didn't believe in God in the first place? The only difference is that in the New World, "Free Will" is no longer an option. So are we, in effect saying that God made a mistake the first time around by giving Man "Free Will" to begin with? So the Good, will be incapable of error or sin and the Evil ones will be incapable of repentance or positive change. The Righteous will be living in a dimension close to God, but in a rather bland world devoid of marriage, food, procreation, children, possibly even pets, and with no goals or purposes to work toward. If we are created "In The Image of God", then it is OUR heritage to be "creators" just like God. And it was child bearing that allowed us to be "co-creators with God." And it is precisely earth changes like volcanoes and earthquakes and seasonal changes and challenges that necessitated Man having to become creative to survive those calamities and problems What will man do daily and even nightly if there is "no night"? He won't be raising crops or practicing animal husbandry if there is no longer any need for food. And I suppose that there will be no need for education if we no longer need medical science and no longer practice any kind of commerce. I had thought or perhaps hoped that the entire purpose of THEOSIS, was that God wanted to take life to all of the most distant parts of the Universe and wanted to use His glorified Sons and Daughters to travel to those distant planets and establish life all over the Universe. But the New Heaven and New Earth that you seem to be describing might even be a genderless world with no purpose other than a never-ending Eternal Liturgy. And I question why would God want to give the Unrighteous and even cruel unrepentant individuals like Hitler, Eternal Life in new and deathless glorified bodies? It doesn't seem either sensible or just. And even IF some of them undergo some kind of mental suffering as a result of being alienated from God, wouldn't it be more merciful just to let them stay dead, rather than resurrect them only to have them be eternally unhappy? Even our criminal court cases of today do not end with murderers being given ETERNAL LIFE SENTENCES. Please help me and others, who find some of these concepts a little bewildering, to see things from God's viewpoint and not lean on our own understanding. Respectfully, Bob, a Russian Orthodox parishioner in Connecticut

I have to point out that everything he described in the section about temptation and accusation at the point of death is the point and purpose of the tollhouse analogy. Not that there may or may not be literal tollhouses, but that we will face temptations and accusations at death and even there we will have recourses to the love and mercy of Christ

Thank you Father, you have answered so many questions for me though towards the end the monk that seemed to be accused by demons on his death bed sounded a lot like the toll houses you earlier disclaimed. If you can explain that interaction.

We need to be complete in order to repent: to be a soul united to a body. Therefore, the resurrection should be a new opportunity for repentance, especially considering that we will see God and His glory, and with a much more perfect, renewed body. The idea that there is no possibility of repentance after death seems radically opposed to the idea that God loves us and want us to be united with Him. This is why so many Orthodox today believe in an eventual universal salvation.

@@youraveragejoe123 when Jesus quoted Chapter 3 of John it was before the resurrection so your point is mute. The same is true with the argument of the thief on the cross that was done before the resurrection while we were still under the old Covenant. The word sleep means more than one thing and there's your dilemma you don't understand old Greek and you're lost in the translation

Hey this question is a little late to the show. But I heard him say “great chasm” between hades and paradise, one cannot go from one to the other. But since the great judgement hasn’t happened could those in hades be resurrected to life, and those in paradise after judgement be in hell? Because how could there end be determined without a judgement. Also how would that initial resting place be determined? I know you have a negitative view of toll houses, but under that ideology umbrella could this be what Russians refer to as particular judgement as a model meaning based on life choices you will be “pulled” or “gravitate” via angels and demons to that temporary resting place, to await final judgment and then the permanent resting place? I was hoping this question would be asked but never heard it asked, this would help me fully found out my theology on the topic. God bless.

The following is a response (not mine) to an article about the possibility of repentance after death and I believe it is correct, despite what Father Davis says. ''Despite the misguided opinions of more than a few saints from the Imperial period, the Church’s teaching on the Harrowing of Hades makes it quite clear that not only is repentance possible in the intermediate state, it is also highly probable (see 1 Peter 3:18-20 and the Resurrection Icon of the Church). The distortions of the Gospel that entered the Church in the early Imperial period due to the prevailing Platonic and pagan philosophies regarding natural immortality, led to further distortions by the clerical and government classes to control the masses. These traditions, like no salvation after death and eternal torment, are harmful baggage that need to be discarded to enable the Holy Apostolic Tradition to shine forth as a beacon of love and hope in the 21st Century.''

The Resurrection of 2nd Corinthians ch.15 is not concerned with individual body resurrection or physical resurrection. It is concerned with the corporate body resurrection of the Body of Moses which passed away in 70 AD at the fall of Jerusalem, and the new Body of Christ (the church) was resurrected. The Old Covenant law (Torah) was know as the ministration of sin and death and the New Testament was written during this era of sin and death. If they sinned under the Old Covenant law, they died, but this was spiritual death, or a separation from God. This is why Christ sacrificed His life, to put an end to spiritual death and when the New Covenant was consummated, there was no more spiritual death. The New Covenant is the ministration of grace and life and the ministration of sin and death (Torah) came to an end in 70 AD. This was the spiritual death that Christ came to defeat. Old Covenant Israel was under the ministration of sin and death and the Resurrection was the end of the Body of Moses (Torah) which was resurrected into the Body of Christ. This has nothing to do with individual bodies coming back to life. This was a corporate body resurrection of sin and death (Torah) resurrected into grace and life (Gospel).

Well Jesus came back to life bodily. He wasn't just spiritually resurrected from the tomb. He physically returned and was recognized and walked and talked with his disciples. His resurrected body was changed, in that he didn't need to eat and could pass through walls, but it was still a body. That's a prefiguring of what is in store for believers after the last judgement. They won't just be souls, but their souls will be united with their bodies in a new and transfigured form. That is the standard dogma of the Orthodox Church as Father Jeremy has outlined in these talks.
