Let me make myself clear.Chuck Schuldiner is in my opinion one of the most original guitarists since Jimi Hendrix really.He made Death Metal a legitimate form of music and made people take notice just by way of his playing.He's in my opinion the greatest metal guitarist of the 90's.The last three Death albums are amazing, You get the feeling he was working hard, learning, enjoying playing ang getting better all the time.

@War Zone Snobs looked down their nose at them because they were not tube powered. The Valvestate was a great amp for metal. If one plays jazz, blues etc, then it would not be the proper amp for those genres.
@crazeyjoe5 жыл бұрын
@War Zone That is why I stated that they are not tube powered. No tubes provides power to the amp. Yes, there is a single ecc83 preamp tube in the amp.
@piotrpiotrowski46814 жыл бұрын
G12-T75s are awesome for classic heavy metal like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, and Valvestate was the backbone of Death's sound, so anyone saying that that gear is bad or sth, needs to get his ears out of his ass.

A legendary guitarist/lyricist/song writer/philosopher and a "human being" who had left us too early... RIP bro...... You're one of the milestones in my entire life. On the other hand, the sound is really awesome in this vid! The tone of the bass and drums are a bit deceptive and overshadowing the true quality of the guitar tone but you've pretty much nailed it. I owned a Valvestate stack back in the day, bought it BECAUSE Chuck used it and loved his tone. Bought the matching cabs to go with the head. The other amp in the band was an Ampeg half stack that had very pronounced lows, so the Valvestate complimented it perfectly on our recordings. Sold it in '08 because I was tired of the problems that apparently couldn't be fixed.

I bought this same head and cab a couple of years ago for my metalhead son, nut he prefers his 1st generation Marshall MG100, so I kept it for myself. Crushing metal tones, but also really good classic Marshall sounds as well. It takes some time to dial it in as there are so many tonal variations, but this and my Marshall Artist 3203 head are my favorites. Marshall is THE sound of hard rock and metal, nothing else comes close...

I wonder how his tone would have sounded through a Randall RG1003H or a similar full solid state amplifier. I love the sound of completely analog Solid State amplifiers and the fact that Chuck used Valvestate blew me away. I feel as if the solid state components definitely tightened up his sound.
@micahj98284 жыл бұрын
The VS8100 is hard to replicate, since it has a tube in the preamp. The Ampeg/Crate Vh140C, GX130C, GX140CH, and GX2200H come close with their second stage op-amp that mimics a tube better than any other solid state, but for some reason are now more expensive than the VS8100. (Edit: I've heard the Crate VTX3500H has the same preamp and is usually under $400, but I haven't found one.)

I love this amp. I always come back to the 8100 and I feels like it understands me: the low end "krowf" it belches on palm muted low strings, and the knife-slice "shing" high end pick scrapes. It's vicious. Not especially reliable engineering (I own three, of which only one works reliably)... but it's vicious. Great recording.

The VS100 is one incredible amp. I used to throw a CS-2 in front of it and it just fucking slayed. Other players at our rehearsal building would knock on the door all the time asking what was making THAT tone... and they always walked away looking quite dumbfounded. I was blessed in getting my JCM 2000 DSL head stolen back in the day (1999). I had no cash and had to "resort" to buying one of these. Incredible! fyi, the Boss CS pedals always make solid state distortion sound MUCH better

amazing amp best gem I found on craiglist ! one of a kind ! Amazing transistor cleans and killer tube distortion .. it goes to 20 not 11 lol I find the OD1 and OD2 with contour can get so many tones.. can get DEATH albums tone all the way to GNR (Apetite) album tone to Cream albums tone . Yes the artist makes the diff too I know but it is so fun getting close to that sound. it lasts like and old Corolla won't die. only bad is the mysterious cycle hum from high distortion. (not bad though but you got to dig for a flaw)

That is very close to the sound, impressive. Were you running something with an X2n humbucker in the bridge. I also have this head, I picked one up as I was a pretty big fan of Chuck and Dime back in the day. I used your settings just now and I like the tone. For anyone out there wondering, an 8100 is imo one of the best / cost effective solutions for a metal tone. It sounds really good on its on. Sounds even better if you boost it with a distortion pedal set to just act as a volume booster and also to run it like a preamp into an all tube power amp (which I believe is what Chuck did on Symbolic VS Individual Thought Patterns....Im guessing a JCM 800).

I have a Valvestate 8100 Marshall, and a Crate GX130-C. They both have different sounds with different settings (of course) but I was able to manipulate them to get the exact same sound out of both for the clean, and distortion channels. It goes beautifully with an Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer though.
