I agree about washing the clothes before handing them to a charity shop. It’s the kind thing to do.

Thank you for the inspiration. When I did my first wardrobe clear out, I kept garments because they'd been expensive or because somebody I care about gave them to me. They'll be going out in my next donation run.

I would wash, iron, put on hangers, photograph and put all those expensive shirts on vinted and sell the lot, with the cash buy a few good shirts that fit you now, someone will get good use of them, or you just end up chucking them in the drawers until you have another clear out and do the same again!

I need to do this badly (heavy major clean up). Having a harder time parting with things these days and really need to overcome that and just do it. My 18 year old cat has kitty alzheimers and doesn't remember the litter box and mostly goes in either the bathroom (waterproof floor) or the kitchen (newly remodeled and all tile) so no harm no foul. I put down puppy pee training pads and she hits those 90% of the time. At 18 years of age and still mostly chugging along I don't fault her for her issues. I guess this defines me as the quintessential crazy cat dad! (And I wear that title proudly!)

Try on the gap shirts before you hang them back up. If they don't fit take them to a consignment clothing shop and sell them. I am doing the same thing right now. Gets easier as you go along and you realize how much you originally had and never wear.

Yes they do it in England. When it was my dad's funeral in 2012 a girl member of the funeral director's staff walked in front of the hearse. She wore a black top hat

Very entertaining Sean.. I need to do some chucking out too.. I do have a nice cosy dressing gown which is lovely in Winter . .Funerals I have been to , the Funeral Director will walk a few hundred yards in front of the hearse and then get back in again for the drive, so it does happen in England as well. Nice tradition.. Hope you got all the stuff to the Charity shop.. Well done ..

This was really perfect for me right now as sorting out possessions is something needed every so often. I'm not moving but while watching I came to the realization that some things I own just need to find new homes so I can just gain some room, use and enjoy what I have. I have some expensive boots that were supposed to be warm but the company lied, just fashion boots not truly useful. I don't have any expensive clothing but was enjoying your way of making decisions. Plus going to look at everything means finding treasures one forgot about.

I went through my clothes like that and did not regret it....I also made the decision to have the same socks, the same brand, in only black (gold toe brand)....they hold up real well......then if you grab 2 socks out of the clean clothes ...its always a pair...I fold them together in 3rds. And roll the top back. to lock them together......simplify. it's easier to give away to thrift store if you picture it just fitting someone who really loves it, and needs it...maybe for that new job they are applying for. Thanks Sean love you humor, and a nice voice.

Good for you, Sean! Yes! I began Swedish death cleaning last spring. Summer in the desert SW of U.S. is like winter elsewhere. You stay indoors out of oppressive and often dangerous heat. I stopped when summer truly hit with high temperatures because the house is hot (even with A/C), and heat makes me sleepy, tired, and weak. Now, we are finally seeing cooler days, and I will be back in the garage getting out boxes and sorting again. Some will remain for a community garage sale in the spring, and much will go to Goodwill or Catholic Charities (as we call them in the U.S.). Wonderful feeling...isn't it?...to get rid of stuff!

When it comes to decluttering if it's not an immediate hell yes then its a no....if you think to much then believe me you will create a scenario in your head to convince yourself to keep it.... watch the minimalists they say "just in case" are the 3 most dangerous words... they also say if the items you're thinking about decluttering were to spontaneously combust would you go out and buy them again...if you wouldn't then get rid.....i love to declutter 😂

Adding to my last comment, I have lived in lots of different places so have duplicates of a lot of things, antiques and books. Planning to download some apps and do some selling. I don't like the idea of death cleaning. No intention of dying until i am 150 lol 😅 xxx

I never knew my grandfather, but I was told that part of his job at the local builders /undertakers was to walk in front of the hearse, and I have a photo of him very smartly dressed in his top hat and tails. His other day job was as a carpenter/cabinet maker. So one day window frames next day coffins !

Loved Zippy at the end 😂 I’ve moved house multiple times so have had plenty of clear outs. We have a 1 in 1 out rule now. If you buy a pair of shoes you should get rid of a pair that are old or you don’t wear any more,same goes for clothes etc. when we downsized we agreed to keep 6 mugs,plates and bowls as we’d accumulated so much crockery over the years. I don’t like a heated bedroom and like you I remember ice on the inside of my bedroom window,not that I want to return to those childhood times. Well done for making a start you can always revisit the clearance another day and question why you’re keeping clothes that don’t fit anymore. I have a friend who made a memory quilt using old clothes,maybe do something similar?

I think its a good thing but i often buy clothes from the charity shop to reuse the fabric and buttons as they are so expensive these days. Cheaper high street clothes always have cheap buttons and zips. Yes, i sew and knit lol. Got jumpers on needles. Some handknits can sell for up to £800. One way of making extra money. Also the extra fabric can be recycled into clothes and blankets and patchwork. Good stress reliever after problem solving for a few hours. Its amazing what people will buy. Especially made to measure xxx
@ellieb393011 ай бұрын
I don't consider the price I paid. It's a 'sunk cost' in that you've already spent the money whether it sits in the back of your closet for the next 20 years or donate it to a charity shop.
@andrewhead6267 Жыл бұрын
Can I say that you made a big mistake straight away. When you said “this is a good jacket - but it might not fit” If you don’t use it, don’t think about how good it is Or how much it cost. Only keep what you use regularly. Not worn or used in last 12 months get rid. On money in pockets, when we cleared my late father’s garage, we found £250 in a pocket of a pair of overalls. Probably cheaper than a home safe! It’s Sevenoaks for Seven Sisters.
