John's death wasn't exactly sudden if you look at it closely. John knew from the get-go that they would kill everyone from the gang, which is why he walked into Fort Mercer going against Bill without any plans at all and drawing his revolver so fucking slow; he wasn't planning to stay alive. Bonnie saving him and looking at her ranch made him think of a better future but unfortunately he already knew they would still kill everyone from the gang once he confronted Dutch. Which is why the last parts of RDR1 are mostly John teaching Jack skills, because he knew he wouldn't be with them any longer. It was already a huge foreshadowing that John will die with how the last missions of teaching Jack is really drawn out for a longer time it should be.

John’s death was totally unfair. He did what Ross has told him to do. Ross promised to let him live the rest of his life with his family if he captures the rest of his gang. But at the end, Ross killed him anyways for his own pride.

Ross saw what happened to Agent Milton when he tried to be resolve things in a civil manner. Milton gave the gang every chance possible and in the end, died for it. I think Ross learned from his mistakes and decided that pure brutality was the only way to handle John Marston, deal or not.

It’s interesting that there’s only like 6 or 7 members of the Gang who didn’t die from being shot. Although Arthur is dependent on his honour & Javier is dependent on if you shoot or lasso him. The ones who did get shot were: Davey & Mac Callander (the former succumbed to his injuries & the latter was put down by Agent Milton after interrogation), Jenny Kirk (succumbed to her injuries), Sean, Hosea, Lenny, Molly, Grimshaw, Cleet (Optional- potentially shot by Sadie), Micah, Bill, Uncle & John. Javier (optional) & Low Honour Arthur if he helps John. Whilst those who weren’t shot were: Kieran (tortured & decapitated by Colm), Low Honour Arthur if he returns for the money (stabbed by Micah), High Honour Arthur (succumbs to Tuberculosis), Strauss (died in custody), Cleet (Optional - hung by John, Sadie & Charles), Karen (unknown- possibly Alcohol), Javier (Optional: if captured alive by John and handed into Archer & Ross… he’ll probably be executed by the government), Dutch (Suicide by Gravity), Abigail (unknown, probably an unknown illness) Survivors: Trelawney (probably with his family in Saint Denis), Mary-Beth (author), Tilly (a married mother in Saint Denis), Pearson (married and shop owner in Rhodes), Sadie (bounty hunter & potentially a security guard in Mexico or South America), Charles (potentially a family man in Canada with the Wapiti tribe), Jack Marston (author/ rancher & lonely outlaw)

When he died I audibly gasped and then in almost quick fire, Lenny met the same fate. That was my least favourite mission. I do love it a-lot though.
