Atmosphere and the animations are so dang good. The little dampened explosions from the pistols and the water implosion after the detonation. Love it. But sadly I think that the level based gameplay loop is not the right thing for this kind of game. If it was more about exploration or a Lovecraftian story line in a changing surrounding, it would be amazing.
@bigblueshoe777 Жыл бұрын
Seriously, the game LOOKS amazing. I'd love a game with this kind of fidelity that instead was about being a scientist trying to catalogue all the life on a reef or something and you have to catch specimens and sketch corals as you explore or something.

From my understanding this is made by one guy. I only know that because he posts in the same game development boards that I follow and post in. Anyway, that's why the gameplay is the way that it is. He's very talented when it comes to visuals and similar things but creating an actual large scale story based game or something similar would be much more difficult for one guy to do.

21:08 I think the fact that the game runs so smoothly with such good visuals is specifically because it's divided into levels and every area you visit is only loaded in/rendered while you're playing in that specific mission. Seems like a good call in terms of performance, even though not so much immersion-wise.

Looks and plays neat. The gameplay loop looks like a tech demo, needs way more, maybe more locations, definitely a boat/bell/cage to base your start/end point from and maybe some more discovery rather than an open treasure-rush.

most of this studio's games look like tech demos. This game looks like it just expanded on their first game, so hopefully DEath in the water 3 will be more of an open world to explore and less "go here collect this kill this be done" gameplay.

There is a compelling core here. I feel like that core would work well in a larger game. Perhaps more realistic treasure hunting mechanics, along with a shipboard element where you have to locate the treasure site. They could add in the deadliest animal: other humans. Specifically other divers from a rival company, armed with similar weaponry. Start adding lionfish barbs to envenom your harpoons or use a dead shark as a meatshield. Also I don't love the top compass showing objectives. Make the player hold out a little sonar locator. See Barotrauma for more ideas on diving + combat (like scooters).

A town or city your selling all the stuff you find, Some shady dealings and 'weird stuff' - like they should go play Cultist Simulator 'cause that has Lovecraft weird stuff in spades and is awesome. I think they need to lean into flora and fauna variety and actual animal behavior. As it is, it looks like every fish is a threat (of varying degrees), which is simply not the case irl. Even sharks rarely outright attack (pre-possession that is). Cautious avoidance and timing could play a much bigger role. (I'm thinking Thief might be a good inspiration). Fish size should also vary (especially with the sharks). It would be really cool if knowledge of the actual ocean and the life in it was rewarded in the game. Also, the ocean here seems oddly ugly because of the lack of color in the coral and seabed. The game does seem to have a good foundation, though.
