Mello is the emotional and darker side of L. Still a genius and a deduction guy however not that complex. Near is simply the calculating and loner side of L.

Mello is very impulsive. He's someone Light did not expect to come for he's used to L's tactics. He has a lot of the initiative that Near lacks. Apparently, L chose Mello to be his successor but he never got the chance to say it. I just read this somewhere but it is a very accurate representation ⬇ Near hides behind the bushes and observes his prey's behavior. Mello instantly jumps on the prey and when it escapes his grasp, he chases it. L, on the other hand, hides behind the bushes with multiple traps set for the prey and when it is in close proximity, he catches it.

Mello to me is the more interesting of the characters between near and mello, very willing to make things happen. Near will speculate and prode and poke but Mello will absolutely swing for the fences to get things happening.

Mello and Near are L's character split into two. Even almost intended as L's children (but the creator thought L would not have been in a relationship enough to procreate). The creator also said that L technically chose Mello as his successor.
