The thing is that Light is the son of the Taskforce's captain. He is a perfect student and by all means a normal teenager. She has no reason to doubt him. Also, even if she was an FBI agent, she is also a grieving wife that would do anyhting to catch the person who killed her fiance. So, as smart as she may be, she is also in a delicate state of mind.

Just to put it in perspective, The woman has lost her husband, her future, and is now on a self-proclaimed hunt for his killer, knowing full well that the people working on the investigation are super secretive. And here, there is a smart, articulate young man who is the son of a case investigator, right in front of her. I think in that moment she sees that as a chance to get involved with the investigation. So I can understand why she started talking to him. She is smart but also desperate.

17:15 If I was in her position (meaning I have information about the Kira case no one else has, and I have a theory based on that information that I am convinced is true), I was trying to talk to the police in charge of the investigation to no avail, and I met the son of the police chief, I would also tell him my theory to get him to either help me talk to his father as fast a possible or at least to get him to tell his father my theory himself. If I wanted to catch Kira as soon as possible I would think that the more people know what I know the better. Otherwise if I get killed that information is lost. In fact if I was her I would have left a note at the police station's reception for the police chief with all the information I have (without my name) and my number, so he can call me. And I would have sent a similar note to my lawyer, with the instruction that if he doesn't hear from me after a few days, he should send copies of the note to the police and the media with my name and the name of my dead partner in the note, so people can investigate and figure out my story is true.

The police on the entrance confirmed Light's identity i.e. the son of chief of police taskforce. Now, if someone wants to convey the message to chief of police, that too desperately, and meets the son of the same chief, anyone would try to explain their theory to the person in hopes that it gets passed to the father. Also, Light initiated conversation talking about his theories about Kira, and it being something that the girl was thinking herself only served as additional validation.

The English dub is a little more "theatrical" which fits the American audience. In the original, Light's voice is more lay low which is can be very intriguing. However for what it is the English dub is ok. The dub company who did the dubbing paid more attention to the project due to the popularity of the show at the time.

Yeah I'd say that's a fair description. I'd also say that as clever as the show is, it's also a rather silly show, very in-your-face and over-the-top with its characters, conflicts, and themes. I think that's a big reason why the theatricality of the dub works so well. But yeah, that's not to say the original falls short in any way, that's just why the dub works for me. And personally I do prefer it, but it's also what I watched first and largely a matter of what I'm used to.

For the raye thing about his fiance, keep in mind this came out in 2006 and that attitude in japan was entirely normal and even considered sweet then. Nowadays especially in other countries, i can see how it can come off a bit clunky, but back then, it wasnt perceived like that. Especially in asain countries. That would be considered protective and sweet. Its essentially him saying "Hey relax, you dont have to work anymore and youre my fiance so you can take it easy now. I got you. Dont stress over me." Times have changed. Thats all.

I appreciate your explanation. My own perspective, which has since changed, as a guy when I originally watched it was that he was trying to protect her from Kira. They had a previous agreement which wasn't elaborated on. There's just not enough information to judge one way or the other, and maybe they did that on purpose so Raye wasn't that "perfect guy." But I can totally understand people, especially females who have dealt with sexism, being sensitive to his comments. I've probably experienced probably a thousand times less sexism in my life than any female has had to deal with, so it makes sense that I would naturally assume Raye was fine. You can really see how much he really didn't want her to be near this with the look on his face when he said to Kyra, "You know about /her/?" He didn't even want her to be in the same country, for her safety. When you're in that line of work, you really want to keep your loved ones as far, far away from your work as possible. But you know, it was funny that commenters were so quick to jump on LM for being quick to jump on Raye.

The dub is very good in this show, but so is the sub. Personally I have no particular preference between the two. There is a slight difference sometimes in how certain sentences are translated, but aside from that both are great. If you ever re-watch the show you should check out the dubbed version, I think you'll like it once you get used to it.

This is just speculation, but there is something that’s mentioned later in the show that suggests to me that the situation with Lind L Tailer (the criminal who died on tv) might have been a deal of some kind that was made with the criminal. Meaning that it’s possible that the man agreed to it despite the risks (they didn’t know for sure at that time what Kira was actually capable of). This would also explain why the man gave such a good performance. It didn’t seem to me that Lind L Tailer was being forced into doing something he didn’t want to do.

The creepy voice for light is the number one reason I don’t like the original. In the dub his voice is much more innocent sounding (unless he is talking to himself or someone who he has just written their name in the dn) which makes him feel much smarter as a character and makes his schoolboy act much more convincing

This was one of the very few issues I had with this show in that there is no way this former FBI agent would just start talking about all this stuff about a high profile classified case with some kid regardless of who they were. To be honest. I watched tbe sub and dub for attack on titan and deathnote. And attack on titan de sub is way better. But with death note the dub is better en more creepy and you get more emotion in the voice lines. And my 3rd language is english so it's not my first language. With DBZ for example i like the dub better aswell. I think it would be better for milena aswell because it's better for her to understand. You can always switch LM reactions haha.

if you watch the english you miss out on the japanese inflections in tone and cadence which often make more sense with how the characters are behaving or what they are saying. a lot of the time, especially for the more campy and goofy anime it doesnt translate into english well at all. it must be experienced through the japanese language as intended if possible.

the Kira investigation is very dangerous, he didn't want her to be involved for her safety, but yea he worded it in a very shitty way. plus this anime was based on a manga that came out 20 years ago. the japanese society is still very conservative today, so it was even more so back then.

Lol, usually when I watch anime that has a good dub, like Death Note or Cowboy Bebop I will actually watch scenes in the Sub and then go back and switch to dub and re-watch it. In VLC you can just hit a couple keys on the keyboard to go back and switch audio tracks so that's what I do, lol - it's just a reflex at this point when I'm watching a show I'll be curious what it sounds like in the dub. There's a character I really like the dubbed voice for but they haven't shown up yet

Raye dialogue to his fiaance couldve been a translation issue coz the dialogue was portrayed weird coz of how he was talking eg tone a body language its or raye is psychopath
