The answer to the final discussion is simple: you would ask the suspect if writing a name in the book kills someone. If they say no, then you say that you will write their name on the book and see what happens. Further, anyone who touched it would be able to see the shinigami, and all you'd need to do is let people hold it to prove it

But that still doesn't really prove that the notebook was the reason the accused died, does it? Correlation doesn't imply causation. It's not enough proof. How would they prove to the court and the public that the magical notebook killed the suspect, and that he wasn't just poisoned or something else by a corrupt system that was desperate to find someone to blame? The Death Note is supernatural, so it's impossible to prove it's the murder weapon with our human means. And the shinigami doesn't have to stay where the notebook is at all times, so the accused could just tell them to stay away and not show themselves. Or couldn't they just revoke their right to the notebook in which case the shinigami would take the notebook back, thus taking away the "smoking gun", and the accused would forget everything they did?

non-spoiler talk/speculation-only: 26:02 let's say they do get a hold of Light's death note without Light knowing about it, just to avoid any damage/tampering to it since we already know he's not against destroying it if the situation demands it. the problem here is not the several names written in his notebook by itself, but the reddest flag are the names specifically written in Light's notebook are all people, mostly criminals, that predominantly died via heart attacks and were all highly suspected victims or Kira, as well as there's literally "DEATH NOTE" written on its cover even with instructions on how to KILL inside. "proving magic" wouldn't be difficult either. since there are already thousands upon thousands of dead criminal's names written in there, L would just write another deathrow inmate's name in the death note just to test it out like he used Lind L. Taylor to bait Kira in the 2nd episode. of course the inmate will die after a few seconds and that's more than enough proof right there. just to be safe, L could write about a dozen more deathrow inmate's names in the death note in court, if they allow it, to prove its power. touching the death note would also expose Ryuk if he's in the vicinity, and as we know he's stuck with Light. he's not exactly on Light's side either like he keeps on repeating so after the initial shock and L asks him questions and tries to barter with the Shinigami for information, especially if he asks for apples which Ryuk is addicted to, he might just spill the beans on Light's plans.

I think the shinigami will happily answer every question that is asked of him, since he has no personal stake here. Finally, the potato chip episode! That's really one of the biggest questions of the series: Did possessing the book change Light? I think every person that age toys with different philosophies, and maybe even entertains all encompassing solutions to world problems. Everyone, at one point, thinks about what the world would be like, if they ran the zoo. If light had power by other means, would he have taken things so far, or did the Deathnote put some sort of curse on his mind? Now, if someone like that had been caught in real life, it would be hard to prove. However, if they figured out how things worked, a simple solution would be to write his name in the book. The loop closes. They can then burn the book before any government gets involved.

Light is the protagonist regardless if you like him villains can be protagonists and being evil doesn't make you the antagonist for example in a alot of vader comics vader is your protagonist whereas the antagonist of this story may be a jedi who is kind hearted in nature death notes not so simple both L and light have dark sides its just most L fanboys/fangirls tend to pretend him and SPOILERS wataris child abuse is normal dispite them literally being the cause of children killing themselves so to to much stress and to high of expectations which is all canon
