They should have just used the general concept and created new characters and settings. A gangster in 1930s America. Or in medieval times in the hands of a learned peasant, who wants to become king but is corrupted. Or just some other new contemporary characters to avoid additional costs related to period pieces. At least this way they wouldn't have ruined already established characters.

my theory on what would happen if anime L went against Light Turner as Kira. First L would figure out Kira's location based on his first victim. And like the OG he would set up a convict due to be executed to go on the news to pose as L, from here Light wouldn't try to kill Lind L Tailor during the broadcast, but Mia would take the death note and do it when Light wasn't watching. L now knows for sure the city Kira resides in, and based on the timings of these deaths also deduct that it's a student. L would also know that multiple people are playing the role of Kira, because for some reason Kira didn't kill the convict on TV but did it later? Kira would know the death would be broadcasted so it makes no sense, L would deduct that during the broadcast one Kira didn't kill him, but a second party did it later. Light doesn't feel threatened like he did in the anime, because L never showed up and broadcasted his deduction, so when he hears the news report of Lind L Tailor's death, he just assumes L is dead and ends it with that. L asks Light's father to join the task force, and Light's dad tells Light that he is working with L and associates with someone known as Watari. Light now feels threatened, and unlike in the movie if this Watari is also using a fake identity, than the death note will not effect Watari. Mia takes and uses the Death note to try to get some police officers to investigate L and and call her number on his real name. The police officers would most likely fail because the anime L and Watari don't give a shred of a hint as to where to find their real names, when L sees the Police officers who died try to find his real name, he deducts that they were under the control of Kira, and using that information he now knows that Kira knows that L is alive, and the only way to know this is through someone who works in the task force. The movie task force only left Light's dad in the task force, L now knows it's Light's dad's son. Despite Light's dad's complaints L secretly plants wiretaps and cameras inside of the Turner's household, and later find Mia and Light talking about who to kill and how to find L's real name. L now has solid evidence who Kira is, and arrests the two and beats the information out of them on how they kill, L finds the Death Note and brings it to court as further evidence. Mia is convicted on attempted murder and second degree murder Light is charged with murder and not taking a potato chip.... AND EAT IT

51:25 actually I want to address that to a certain degree. As a disabled black kid who went to a suburban school when I was younger. Usually the people who are the bullies or the AAA students. The ones that are known to be the smart people and whatever else but some of them might be racist or some of them might think that they are superior than other people because they are parading around like that. It’s the same philosophy with football players and whatever else. Having the the bully kid be light really pushing the stigma of a minority or person who Uncool getting power and then using it for bad things. So it gives people who are conventionally cool or conventionally smart or whatever a chance to call people strange and have a reason why they wouldn’t even give them any kind of an advantage or attention. Who if I let them boost himself up they’ll end up doing something crazy because they were weird for a reason. If they’re different they’re bad and if anybody hangs out with those different people there must be something wrong with them to. That kind of stuff.

Why did they change the title from "This was actually pretty good", to a complete opposite title like this one?

I wish director's would stop trying to 'remake' anime into live action. They can't remake a live action if it hasn't been made yet. They need to make a live action. We don't want an interpretation, we want the anime as live action. There's a huge difference!

The movie is cliché, with good music but that doesn't fit it's tone and a lead character badly written. It's mediocre like a 4/10 But it's even worse if you have the manga/anime comparaison

You guys should check out the Japanese TV drama version. It's a vast improvement.

I wouldn't have too much of an issue with this movie, if it was a standalone thing. It's just NOT EVEN REMOTELY faithful to the anime, which is the goddamned purpose of an ADAPTATION.

What made this movie trash was that 10 episodes of cat and mouse were resolved in 30 seconds.. "You're Kira!" "Yeah, well, do something about it" trash

The fact that Suraj was on board when even the opening scene is trash, just proves that his opinion doesn't hold any weight and it's understandable that he doesn't get certain characters in other shows that require a bit of analyzing to understand

I love the anime but this movie is a camp classic in my opinion. The acting, the writing, EVERYTHING is just so over the top in the worst but funniest way. Honestly a great unintentionally comedy.
