Near was smart, but as Light himself admits, he’s no L. As light said, L would’ve considered the possibility of a fake notebook from the very beginning, and Near, if not for Mikami’s mistake, would’ve walked right into Light’s trap. Near said it too- neither himself or Mello could’ve surpassed L by themselves. L truly knew how to get to Kira’s nerves in a way that even Light respected and feared.
@100sleepeon3 Жыл бұрын
I like to think that L is balanced an overall efficient when it comes to make moves and deducing but that Mello is far better than him to make moves meanwhile Near is far better than him to deduce and manage a case , each of them completely lacking of the other part (Near can't handle himself alone + Mello expose way too much himself), making them overall weaker than L but together overall better. I mean by that Mello is really impulsive and pro active , each of his moves were in a sense better than L's cause meanwhile most of L's moves were psychological tricks to try making Light betraying himself on the long game Mello's one forced Light to think fast cause everything was going on too quick. Every moves of Mello heavily impacted the case cause Kira was forced to act under a real timed pressure and couldn't take his time to think at the best counter measure. On the other hand , Near don't overthink the same way as L did and go straight to the point searching directly a way to corner Kira in a dead way to make himself reveal his identity instead of searching to prove who he exactly is. Kira could've been Matsuda , Aizawa , Mogi , Soichiro , Light... that was the same for him as long as he can find a way to make Kira admits that he is.

Most ppl may not notice it but the voice actress for Near is sooo skilled. her pronunciation is impeccable. She makes everything sound subtly intimidating and passive aggressive in a masculine AND childish way, which is very difficult for females who grow up with more feminine intonations. she obviously put a lot of work into her craft. Love that the very mild pitch intonations and pitch stressors she uses for emphasis are so emotive while still giving off a deadpan “flat” affect. If you try to mimic a phrase in this video and compare yourself to her, you’ll notice how mild her pitch stressing/emphasis and intonation is and I think that’s part of what makes it so effective. She must have learned how to do a “less is more” approach to pitch. She’s a master. And the breathiness of her voice is pretty and ethereal. Cool voice, great acting skill, great speech skill, perfect choice for the character, seriously a perfect 1:1 dub anime voice, she had to be thinking hard and speaking very carefully to be able to do this, and I bet she studied Japanese voice acting a LOT in order to replicate it this well in the English language. It’s a shame I don’t see her in dubs much anymore! So many characters would have been given a new life if she voiced them, especially because good younger boy / truly androgynous voices are very hard to come by, many of them just sound like adult women. Not everyone can do it. Whoever directed the death note dub generally did a good job as well.

Near was a better leader than L, and both were far ahead of Light. Which is arguably why Light lost. Exactly. Mogi and Matt also has more character involvement in the case in the Managua too. There was a moment where Mogi and Aizawa ran into Mello and Matt at the airport that led to them removing Misa Amana from the picture I order to investigate Takada more. Also, Near got more in depth with explaining how Mikami’s own actions backfire against Light when Mello kidnapped Takada.
@Bloooo95 Жыл бұрын
@@IsaacAtap yep! I also think it’s important because Light, in the manga, understands why Mikami did what he did. Mikami did it out of loyalty because Takada *had* to be dealt with to avoid Mello or Near getting a hold of her. Light failed to let Mikami know he can act in emergencies so Mikami felt he was the only one with agency to do what Light knew needed to be done. Light failed to account for that and Light realizes that in the manga and not in the anime.

@@Bloooo95 It actually also helps explain a lot of stuff at 6:18 of the video when Near deduces that Mikami is X-Kira because in the show the skip over the part where Mikami uses that speech as a way to subtlety communicate to Kira that he wants instruction and that if doesn't receive it he'll interpret Kiras words on his own. Near used this to reverse engineer the timeline from when Demegawa was killed to when Takada was named Kiras spokesperson. It's symbolism. It's what the author likes to convey to audiences pertaining a character, including Near. His compulsion to possess and to organize toys to manipulate their positions implies the way his mind works - The attention to details, multiple ways to construct, organize, manipulate and plan, being able to spot anomalies in his toys, being a perfectionist in every block which relates to his ability to be sharp in his deductive skills and constructive reasoning. Basically this is use of parallel symbolism in relation to his investigative prowess.

A lot of the hatred comes from the fact that it was L versus Light the whole time, and people felt that it made L's appearance unnecessary since someone that hadn't been in the show at all the whole time suddenly appears as another match for Light. Making the whole stakes of L versus Light feel pointless in the end. Near could be seen as a scapegoat with how he was introduced in the anime (I don't know how it was handled in the manga). Personally I like Near, but I understand why people were upset with him being added in. If you were going to say that Light existed as "Evil acts with 'good intentions'" and L existed as a symbol of the morally accepted Justice System. It could have ended with Light winning. Light was clearly the bad guy in the series, a tyrant. He managed to create a safer world at the expense of fear, but the world was safer and less deadly. The closest a world could get to "world peace". Meanwhile L stood for the rights of individuals in a Justice System in which people were allowed a fair trial and would live in less fear of one singular entity. It was two ideals against each other, but the draw of the show was L versus Light. So when someone new took over, it just felt pointless. Yes they all technically worked together after L's death, but it still took away from the main rivalry and basically said to the audience "There was never going to be a chance that Light would have won, the narrative was already decided in favor against him by people in the background whom were never introduced before".

He is nearly (pun not intended) the same as Light, an ENTJ, except that Near is introverted as opposed to extroverted. which is what the E and I stand for. They are both Judgers. I think people liked L too much for anyone else to replace him. I like the dynamic between Near and Mello that existed. They were two sides of the same coin that was L. Near was the calculating detective, and Mello was the more emotional side of L that occasionally surfaced itself. People unfairly judge these two characters as L ripoffs, but their designs and character attributes were deliberately contrived to represent both sides of L. A recent analysis I spotted was that Near also could represent the calculating side of Light Yagami without the ego and insurmountable god complex. I find Near quite an engaging character for his purely cold and calculating nature, though L was always more fun for me to watch due to his underlying humanity underneath his cold logic. Near lacks this humanity which, whilst making him an interesting character in his own right, doesn't make him as endearing or fun to watch as L. Much like his toys and puzzles, Near viewed the Kira case as nothing more than a game.

I'd love to like him, I'd REALLY love if there was anything that made him particularly unique or let him earn the victories he got, but there's really not much. He's just a less interesting L and gets his wins for free because the plot demands it.

Things that most people get wrong about Near: He`s not emotionless, it`s just that like L and Sherlock Holmes he sees emotional and romantic feelings as anathema to deductive integrity. Although all Wammy kids were encouraged to compete ferociously for the honour of succeeding L,(Although admittedly part of that may have been his "natural talent")Near didn`t put as much stock in this competition as the others and when Roger asked him and Mello to work together, Near was far more open to the possibility than the hotheaded Mello was. Much like myself and L, he is most likely on the Asperger`s/Autism Spectrum as shown by his dull affect,childishness,repetitive behaviors,Eidetic memory and obsession with stacking his toys and puzzles in an ordered manner much like L used to do with his cakes and sugar cubes. Also like myself and L, he overthinks to the point of insomnia. Near admires L more than he lets on as whilst he initially dismisses L as "a loser", he models his posture,mannerisms,dress,speaking voice(Both as himself and "N" or "Babel" in the Drama) after a younger version of his predecessor.This is even more apparent in The Manga,Films and Drama. Unlike L, he is even more blunt and precise and paradoxically not as overtly antisocial and manipulative as L could be later on in the Kira case which in part led to his downfall. Near(Like myself and his creators Ohba and Obata)is an existentialist. "What is good from evil?What is right from wrong?What is righteousness from wickedness?No one can say.I am no different from you,Light Yagami.I do what I believe to be right and assume that to be righteous.However, the power to dictate with the stroke of a pen what is right or wrong for society and any person who would use such power I see as neither just nor peaceful.Supposing there was a God and his teachings were before me, I would still think things through and decide for myself what I thought was right or wrong."

I always thought it was interesting that Ryuzaki L understood that Kira would have to be someone with a very childish concept of justice. Interesting that it took someone with so many childish traits to catch him. Also, I think Near mainly benefitted from Mello's sacrifice. Like Ryuzaki L, Mello understood that getting involved directly and putting his life on the line was necessary for solving the case. Like Near says in the end, if there had been only one successor to L, either he or Mello would have failed. But Near was able to benefit from someone else putting their life on the line: his victory required the sacrifice of Ryuzaki L and Mello. He could sit back and analyze everything from his safe room, sort of in the style Ryuzaki L used to solve cases like the Los Angeles B. B. murder cases.

Manga Near is much better. In the manga, we see how Near reaches his conclusions and he even gets it wrong sometimes. I wish the anime portrayed him the way he is in the manga. In the anime, he just magically knows everything and I think that's why some people don't like him. I saw the anime first and already liked Near, but then I read the manga and I respected him even more. Plus, the final confrontation between Near and Light in the warehouse is much better in the manga as well. I really like Near, he's my 3rd -favorite character. Thanks for watching!
