Even though the manga's version of Light's death was absolutely perfect and poetic, I sorta prefer the anime's version. And this coming from someone who HATED Light. I loved how as he's running away in futile attempt to escape, he's flashing back to the beginning, when he was a somewhat cynical, but otherwise wide eyed idealist that only wanted to do what was right. And when the two versions of himself cross; the young, clean and successful Light Yagami and the bloodied, evil and irredeemable monster Kira, it's just...so sad. Light was on his way to a pretty well earned, happy and successful life. He would've gotten his dream to be a detective, and even the creators said he would've worked closely with L. But then came the Death Note, and Light threw his life away

oh wow, that's smart. his plan seems pretty stupid in retrospect. Like, a lot of people were killed, and presumably a lot of crime was prevented, but only for five years. I don't think there's a good way of making sure his legacy continued. It seems doomed from the start, and especially sad when he could've done so much more.

While I agree that it’s sad to see how far Light has fallen, I disagree that he was on the path to a “well earned successful life.” At his core Light was a genius who knew that he was smarter than everyone else. He was always in a position to develop a sociopathic god complex, just in this story the Death Note enabled him to enact his power over the entire world. Light was always a bad person at heart, the Death Note was just an opportunity for him to act on his desires and label it as “justice”. In another life without the death note light would have still gone on to use his intelligence to manipulate people and enact power, just not as Kira. Maybe instead as a politician, or businessman, or a corrupt detective, or heck maybe even as a serial killer. IMO, power doesn’t corrupt, but instead that corrupt people seek power.

A cruel reminder of life, is not death that Light is running from (he's been acquainted to it ever since he got hold of the Death Note anyway), but from the cruel reality he is facing as he knows he has lost now. The sadness comes (as it is implied through the cinematic that his life is passing by) when he probably realizes what he did. Running from the consequences of his actions, which precisely by running is the proof of wrong doing again, when people do good they accept death naturally, but here we are seeing a person that obviously was far from good, lost in his own arrogance. Even the Shinigami offers a merciful escape to the vanquished Light, sure it masks it as boredom, but the fact the Shinigami does not want to wait for him to die naturally in a cell, offers the spectator a glimpse of a Shinigami developing a barely level of emotion display, like pitty. Which adds more to the shameful end Light will face. The music is in my opinion, truly according to that, as while listening while watching, it is impossible for me to feel any kind of sympathetic emotion towards Light character.

Maurice Chagall I agree that would be a point of view if considering only the music and what brings to the mind just by listening to it. However, my comment is based considering the music AND the cinematic presented together. The cinematic never emphasizes any right/wrong doing but rather a point of time where Light sees himself as a simple student, The crossroad between who he was and who he is.Therefore, based on whom he has become and what he did is why I said I can't feel any sympathy for him.

Seriously. I watched that scene thinking Light deserved it, but I felt so sad and cried watching the scene because it was so sad. All the moments you spent with the protagonist, and his life has now fallen apart, with the memories of another Light walking past just made this much sadder. The Death Note has corrupted him and a mere scene of him running, crying has made me feel really bad for him even though I feel he deserved it big time

I really hope death note will live on in the history of anime. This is probably the best soundtrack I’ve ever listened to. It fits the original manga so incredibly well that it almost seems like the music has come off the pages themselves. The only other anime that’s done that has been JJBA but even then it feels like some parts are just off. Every bit of music in Death Note fits, no matter where it’s used. It’s almost sickening that this is all were left with for death note, but at the same time I’m glad. This show and it’s soundtrack are just so under-appreciated, and I hope it will remain in the minds of everyone in the years to come.

+Cheerio Totoro I know, but I doubt someone else would've been as capable as Light. Light even said it himself, "who could have gone that far" and "would anyone act as selfless as him". Ryuk and Near said at one point that most people would've been too scared to continue after writing the first name. When you said "all this because of a bored Shinigami..." I thought you were referring to what Light had accomplished: the New Utopian World with Light as God. All that wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't Light. Only Light had the capacity to go that far, evading the police, evading the world's best detective and deceiving the way he did.

The plan was too arrogant, it was extremely uncharacteristic for Light to do so. The Light Yagami that has developed throughout the show would have let Near go on with his plan, sit back and let Mikami write Light's name in the notebook that was guaranteed to be fake (being that Light was aware of Near's plan.) Knowing him, Light would surely let Mikami die for his goal to become the "God" of the world, as Kira. The creators noticed this I'm sure, yet they still went on to completing the entire series this way. I'm very ashamed on them for that, it appears all of the near perfection, ingenues, and incredible plot structure went to near waste, considering how they ended the show. I was very disappointed to see they stooped that low. However, with that still being, this is the greatest television show, anime, anything related to moving picture frames that I have ever seen, by far. To the creators of this show, thank you for the greatness of Death Note.
