You know, I kind of prefer this version. Yes, the anime one was more dramatic, and I love it as well. But this one delves more into the mind of Rem, who I think was sorely underdeveloped and underutilized in the anime. Seeing the event from her perspective added something that was lacking in the original.

A few information tips for those who recently arrived to see the scene: First of all, the movie is amazing, it is a great adaptation and really catches the true spirit and premise of Death Note. On technical aspects: The acting is good (In Japanese standards, a good acting means overacting, the influence of Kabuki), and the CGI is quite good for the time (I will add that in Japan there is a canon that states that Monsters, Aliens, etc... are supposed to not look too realistic, because they are not real, I know, it sounds weird, but that's how it is). On story aspects: It is a great adaptation of the MANGA, the movie was released months before the anime even aired, which means the script was worked on parallel with the manga, not the anime. Last but not least, I will say that in Japan, when aired, both Death Note and the Last Name stayed on top of the Japanese box office, never forget, this are Japanese movies made for Japanese Audience, so at the end of the day (specially during those times) if we liked the movie or not, didn't really matter to them.

Bianca Panzram I actually find YOUR comment lame. You just say the movie is "shit", probably, just because it was not animated. However you have not given a single argument over why it is "shit". For your information I also have seen a "LOT" of Japanese films, that is no argument to say what their "standard" is. The Movie went well both critically and in the box office, and for someone who claims to have seen a lot of Japanese films, I'm quite amazed that you don't get the part of "this are Japanese movies made for Japanese Audience", they do tend to work that way, their main goal is for the movie to sell well in their country, if it sells bad outside, they don't really care that much. It is only in the last few years that Japan studios have started to give some importance to the international opinion.

Rem: Light Yagami, you had been waiting for this to happen. Ever since I told you we'd die if we prolonged human lives. You've put her in danger so I'd have to save her. Now I must prolong her life and turn myself to sand. You've had this planned out all along. You must a real devil to want a god of death dead. And Misa is in love with such a man. Master Keikaku Agreed completely! I don't know why people dislike the movies so much when they are really good even if they do have stupid changes but honestly "there is no movie without a sin". I have enjoyed the movies and while I didn't like them as much as the anime and the manga I thought that it was one of the best adaptation ever made. On the case of Watari I think he was truly amazing and has been a tremendous help for L through his life and has been more than a butler. He alone could give L what none other could which was emotional support. Other than that he was highly intelligent speak in many language had good connection MANY skills and was still in a very good shape despite his elderly age. Imo Watari was a great and sadly a really underrated character who served L with absolute loyalty and who without L wouldn't been able to come that far.

***** Sorry, but you are actually mistaken. There is no ending of Light becoming a Shinigami, that is a misconception created by obsessive fans who think the nameless shinigami from "Death Note Relight: Visions of a God" is Light reincarnated. This is false as in Death Note Manga (and Anime), it is stated: 1- "All humans, without exception, will eventually die.", 2- "After they die, the place they go to is MU (Nothingness).", 3- "Once dead, they can never come back to life.". Ryuk himself said to Light in the Manga "All Human are equal in Death", which means, like any human, once Light dies he will cease to exist. The other ending you say of Light waking up in the Shinigami Realm and forced to relive all the deaths he caused is just a fancomic (A very well made fancomic).
@Kentaruz10 жыл бұрын
***** Sorry, but you are mistaken again, I don't want to sound harsh but... a Fan Comic Ending is still a Fan Comic Ending, non-canon and unnoficial, so no, it doesn't count, no matter how well made it is, sorry, but it is not official. And unfortunately, for Light's fans, those "hints" are merely fanservice, the Nameless Shinigami is not Light, and you are right, when Ryuk says "Right, Light?" he is just speaking to the memory of Light, not to the Shinigami. The series itself, from the beginning gave hints about what happens to humans after they die, Ryuk's line "Don't think that a human who's used the Death Note can go to heaven or hell" is one of the most beautiful dialogues of the series because it causes a quibble, a plot device used to fulfill the exact verbal conditions of an agreement in order to avoid the intended meaning. The first time you hear that dialogue you think "Oh, a human who has used the Death Note can't go to Heaven or Hell", when in truth, after the final rules of the Death Note are revealed, specifically "After they die, the place they go to is MU (Nothingness)." and Ryuk's line of "All Human are equal in Death", it is made clear what Ryuk really meaned with that dialogue, "that not even a human who's used the Death Note will be able to go to heaven or hell, and like all other humans, when that human dies, it will cease to exist". In fiction, as long as it is canon, it is written in stone, rather we like it or not, but once something is made official, unless there is a retcon, sorry, but it will remain canon, that's reality.
@Kentaruz10 жыл бұрын
***** Oh, I'm totally chilled out, don't believe a person is angry just because they write long paragraphs. If we are going to prejudge, I would say you are angry due to your reuse of the "I dont mean to be harsh", I used in my last comment. However I don't want to prejudge, neither I believe you are angry, I think you just want this conversation to end. So, let's end it here, and just worry about enjoying this awesomeness of a series (Manga, Movies, Anime) that Death Note is! :D

From what I recall, L anticipated this and actually wrote his own name down in the book so that he would have a bit more time and also since he already has a destined death date it can not be interfered with by anyone else writing another for him, thus when Light's attempt on his life fails... well, it's pretty clear after that to L why he would say "check mate".

Honestly the show was great; what's funny is people say that the Japanese live-adaptation is just as great and that an American version would be absolutely awful. I'm not agreeing nor disagreeing with that last part, as Hollywood isn't exactly consistent in bringing a true-to-heart adaptation to theaters, but that's not without saying this live-action film didn't have it's fair share of off-canon features to pull at the hairs of any nit-picky fan of the series. Honestly all it would take for an American adaptation to surpass this one is canonical accuracy and exceedingly excellent acting via character understanding and portrayal. It doesn't take race/language to keep the heart and integrity of a good story intact, it takes a good telling of that story and a believable atmosphere. What with graphical technologies these days, there is absolutely no reason why the Shinigami's and their realm couldn't be made to look absolutely realistic, soo-much-so you're legitimately creeped out by them. However excellent graphics would mean nothing if it's not as canonically accurate as possible; you should at least be able to get genders right. I know a lot of people love this adaptation, but I personally have a hard time watching it without feeling disappointed around every corner. To everyone their own!
@mambojambo57649 жыл бұрын
+Ashley Anderson Thank you, finally someone who doesn't like the live-adaptation, but doesn't necessarily bash it nor treat it as garbage. I personally love it, and I find it a great adaptation, specially how they adapted the story of the manga. Could it may have been adapted better? Maybe, but some of the greatest adaptations in cinema are not exactly carbon-copies of the source material, that's the wonderful thing of adaptation, it can expand the story to show you a completely different view of it. Again, I love the adaptation, and I try to understand those who don't, just as you said, "To everyone their own!". I think the real fear most people have with the american version is due to the unnecessary censorship it will have due to being, well... an american adaptation dealing with a story about gods and a man who wants to be god. For example, some of the changes the studio was already proposing was changing Light's objective from justice to revenge and to remove the Death Gods from the story, luckily the Director went against those changes, but we haven't heard anything else after that... After reading "All you need is kill", I remember going to watch "The Edge of Tomorrow" thinking, "this is going to suck *Dragon Ball Evolution-bad*", but it turned out to be a great adaptation, of course, I complain about one or another change they made, but in general, it had a good pacing and storytelling and the atmosphere was completely believable. I don't think the problem with adaptation has to do with how canonically it is made with the source material, it has more to do to keep the idea and spirit of the story, more than the actual facts, that's something I feel the Death Note Live-actions are able to accomplish... see Park Chan-wook's Oldboy compared to the source manga from Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, the initial setting is almost the same, but the stories take a turn that made them completely different, however both the manga and film keep the same spirit, that's what make it a great adaptation.
@artofAshleyBrooke8 жыл бұрын
I hear ya! Probably my biggest disappointment with adaptations would have to be the Japanese live-action adaptation of Attack on Titan. Like I said in my original post: race isn't soo much an issue so long as X and O are intact, but we knew that in the world of AoT it was directly and intentionally pointed out that Mikasa was supposed to be the only Asian left that we were aware of (with the group through S1 & 2), hence why she even became a part of Erin's life to begin with. I felt like that was something of a change too severe to ignore. My OCD won't get over it so I'm already at that point where I can't even bring myself to watch it, which is a shame, because AoT is one of my favorites.

this movie....no....even parodies are made better than this. They changed everything....and the only character that's even remotely perfect is watari....the damned butler....

+fweeenzie 13 um, wow, ryuk-- blah blah blah blah... Can't even dignify that with a proper response. I did see the movie, which is how I can say what I've said without restraint.

1:51 L fell sideways and landed back first without Light catching him which ig is okay since its an adaptation but how does the chair fall face first? It also falls side ways and if it skids due to the rotatable wheels it should technically fall to its back

Terrible actors and terrible CGI. Why did they have to ruin Death Note by making this crap? Not only Death Note, but all animes. Dragonball and Avatar for example.
@Crimson_Tango10 жыл бұрын
I agree this is crap but I don't see how it ruins Death Note, it's still every bit as awesome whether this movie exists or not.

Warner Bro.s are doing the same thing... And they said that L was an FBI investigator and NOT a private detective. Get ready for Dragonball Evolution 2.

This movie is amazing! The cgi is bad and the acting is eh, but they improved on the crap ending Death note had! It's worth a watch =)
@Kentaruz10 жыл бұрын
First of all, the movie is amazing. On story aspects: It is a great adaptation of the MANGA, the movie was released months before the anime aired, which means the script was worked on parallel on with the manga. Last but not least I will say that in Japan, when aired, both Death Note and the Last Name stayed on top of the Japanese box office, never forget, this are Japanese movies made for Japanese Audience.

Wait, why did the notebook catch on fire. The rules say in the notebook that if a shinigami kills a human before he is due to die, only the shinigami will die and disappear, but the notebook will remain.

in my opinion, i think live actions are stupid. they always choose actors that lack good looks, and the animations most of the time are pretty bad. the "attack on titan" movie was horrid. they changed the whole plot and half of the movie didn't even make sense. i really think they should just leave the anime as it is and don't ruin the image that some users have made in there heads.
@samanthakamman22588 жыл бұрын
I agree with you there, however, there is one small thing the movies did that I agree with and that is their decision... (SPOILER WARNING) to have L be the one to defeat Light. After all that build-up between their cat and mouse game, and the connection the two had, it made a lot of sense. Not that I hate the anime/manga ending, though.
@nosoytukasa69138 жыл бұрын
I can't defend the "Attack on Titan" live action adaptation, because well... it can't be defended... however, I have to say you have 2 mistakes about the Death Note Live Actions, first of all, the main cast; Tatsuya Fujiwara (Light) and Kenichi Matsuyama (L) are, to these days, 2 very popular actors in Japan, and they were casted as Light and L, precisely because they could both act the part and had the good looks THE JAPANESE were looking for (Don’t forget, these are Japanese films, made for a Japanese audience). So, saying they casted actors who “lacked good looks” is totally ridiculous. Also, these are 10 years old movies, for their time, the Shinigami effects were quite praised and to these days, Ryuk still looks the part (Not sure if the same can be said about Rem, though). The second mistake is a common one and I don’t blame you for it, but for your information, the Live Action Films came BEFORE the anime adaptation (Live Actions were released on June 17, 2006 and October 28, 2006 respectively, while the anime was first aired on October 3, 2006), please don’t forget, Death Note is, first of all, a manga. So you can’t say they “ruined” it with the live action films, because, in fact, they went into production and were released, BEFORE the anime adaptation (BTW, both films were box-office hits in Japan). At most, if you prefer the animated version, you can say it improved the level of adaptation of the manga, but that is up to personal taste. You are free to like the anime more than the live action, and you are free to not like the live action at all (I myself love the live actions, that's why I can't stand when people bash them on such lame reasons). But, if you are going to comment against them, I think it is better to get your facts straight first.

The movie is pretty good. But it lacks budget. Youd think Sony pictures, with its infinite pool of financial resources would make something spectacular for the Japanese film industry. Tatsuya Fujiwara is a great actor. He was the first Japanese actor, that I took notice of. Way back when he did battle royale.
@TheAwakealive12 жыл бұрын
In book 6/7 you can read that Rem is a girl, when Misa doesn't remember the death notes. I was also surprised.

I think they were talking about in this movie, because in the end L won by tricking Light, and then L change the world took place. :) However you are right, in the anime it was his 'ghost' but in the anime guide book that was only released in Japan: *English translation is online* The 'ghost' wasn't supposed to appear at all, giving the audience a: 'Open ending' whether they chose L worked around his death or was actually a phantom is up to the watcher. :)

this was slightly different from the anime englisj version because rems book doesnt go up in flames but it was still interesting to watch. and the shimigami look better in real life then in the anime, it gives a more realistic idea to the movie
