I can't speak for Jeremy Jordan, but this musical is awesome. Regarding whether it "took off" - it was actually popular in Korea. It did well in Japan, and it's becoming more popular again. Just because a musical isn't famous internationally doesn't mean it's low quality.

Except that Hamilton is in the middle of a hurricane... Light *is* the hurricane. Hamilton recalls how he wrote his way out of a hurricane by writing a letter where he said "The horrors of the night - the prospect of an immediate cruel death - or, as one may say, of being crushed by the Almighty in his anger - filled us with terror." He wrote about God, and how it's His design that brought the hurricane upon them, and he asks for pity from his fellow mortals, for his fellow mortals. Light considers himself to hold the power of God in his hands, and he uses it to kill those he thinks unworthy. So like, they're seeing a hurricane from different sides. Hamilton is inside, desperately trying to write his way out. Light is writing the hurricane into life.

@@KevlarCaviar I'm very new to this story and have never read the manga, and I've only heard about 5 songs of the (would have been?) Death Note musical. So, I'm wondering, is there a way to destroy the Death Note? That seems like the best solution so nobody could use it or be tempted. (Maybe this is a dumb question.) I know nothing about this story other than what I've learned reading comments, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Here's what I've picked up on so far: 1.) Light is the (or a) main character, voiced by the fantastic Jeremy Jordan 2.) Light talks with a teacher at some time, I'm guessing relatively early in the story. They talk about justice, Light pointing out the hypocrisy and inconsistencies in the justice system and refusing to settle for that, and the teacher agreeing it's fucked up but arguing it's much more complicated/nuanced than "let's just kill all the bad people" 3.) Light finds the death note, which capitalises on his black-and-white view of justice, as well as his well-intentioned desire to make everything better, and uses these things to slowly corrupt him 4.) Light becomes Kira, a villain everyone is terrified of (idk what that means, is Kira an alias? does everyone who picks up the death note eventually turn into/go by Kira? is Kira an evil spirit or a form of consciousness that gradually possesses whoever uses the death note?) 5.) L is the antagonist trying to catch Kira, and he suspects Light (it's argued that L's intentions/actions are more pure than Light's, despite him being the antagonist) 6.) Mina/Misa is in love with Light, who is preoccupied with playing L's game ...and that's all I've got so far. I'm guessing Light is caught or killed in the end, which is a shame. I feel like he needed therapy and a hug more than anything. Instead he found the death note (somehow), poor thing.

I love, love LOVE this musical SO MUCH for SO many reasons, but the fact that they use powerful nature imagery for Light (like in this song - he is a hurricane, an unpredictable and powerful force of nature, capable of taking so many lives effortlessly and wiping the humans and everything they've ever made off the face of the Earth) and computer imagery for L (asking whether he sees pixels instead of dreams, comparing him to a line of code, etc.) is one of my favorite things about it!! Just, the contrast between those two in this? Fucking amazing. And better yet, it sort of gives their character a little arc through that; Light, originally enthusiastic about his ideals and ready to make big speeches about justice in the middle of class, having to step back a little and be calculating and cold - and L on the other hand, who usually hides behind the computer screen has to step out and be aggressive and open and aRGH-- I just really like what the musical did with these characters :'-)

I know I'm late to say this, but I mean, the imagery also works because Light is going on the _primal_ sense of justice, punishing injustice because he feels it's wrong, and L fights on the side of the law, a human construction, so more computers vs nature stuff

Some things I've noticed in this song was that when the first verse was played it sounded melancholy as to symbolize Lights initial hesitance towards the death note. The drums emergence also symbolizes the emergence of Kira and it also shows Lights mindset after writing the first name. The drums are played throughout the rest of the song as to symbolize Lights transition from just Light Yagami into the murderous Kira. Hurricane shows both the death of Light and the subsequent birth of Kira.

My all time favorite Death Note song, it magnificently captures the story and essence of Lights character. Throughout the Anime, your not sure if your with or against him, but this song illustrates his mindset and heart. Almost everyone says killing is wrong, but the human nature is sinful. We say we would never kill, but to a sinful human heart, wiping all the evil off the face of the earth and becoming a god-figure is tempting. Like alcohol and drugs, killing is addictive, but nevertheless, this song is SO beautiful and perfectly captures his scene of justice. I just love Light so much, best Anime character in the world. And Jeremy Jordan as him, perfection!
@TheSpectator74 жыл бұрын
It's also tragic how Light becomes a murder purely from his curious disbelief towards the death note itself. Light always saw himself as someone driven logically and scoffed at the plausibility of it's power. only to realize he committed murder by consequences of trying to prove the Death note to be a simple farse and trying in vain to comprehend what he has done before spiralling into madness, and becoming Kira.
@denslow85524 жыл бұрын
David J Thomson very similar to Jekyll and Hyde
@kendahlburk76963 жыл бұрын
Your comparison to alcohol and drugs is very interesting, and in Light's mind it is very accurate. Light sees himself almost as a messiah-like character; he is willing to sacrifice his honor, soul, and integrity to cleanse the world. However, most people around him just see him as someone trying to become god, and that is his goal. So a comparison to alcohol and drugs is shockingly accurate, in that way. And we also see it later, with Soichiro then talking about how anyone with that much power to kill is cursed, which relates to the addiction point. However, my personal take on it is it was more a self-realization. Killing may not be addictive, but rather, enlightening (for Light, anyway). It allowed him to compare his sense of justice to his newfound power, and realize he should use it. Lastly, does Light have a sinful heart, and if human nature is sinful, why are there those who would self-sacrifice? I may not be an optimist, but I see human nature as more forceful than anything else. Arguing we are naturally pure of heart and just is hopeless, but so is arguing we are naturally full of sin. In my eyes, Light isn't sinful, rather, he is forceful. He is trying to use his power to follow what he believes is justice, and that makes him a sinner? Sin is a relative concept, one that only a few things can be wholly classified as sinful, as everything has two sides. Arguably, Light is pure of heart rather than sinful. He is willing to do whatever it takes, in his mind, to do what is right, even sacrifice everything. I don't think we can shame Light for what he is doing; that in and of itself would be sin. Light has a strong moral foundation, and is willing to cross any lines to achieve it. Which, this leaves me with a lasting question, what would L have done if he got the notebook, you think? What would stop L, if he used it, given even Light wasn't smarter than L. Light just had luck, allies, a god commit suicide for him, and a relatively big brain. So think about that, what would L have done with the notebook?

This is probably one of my favorite songs off the whole tracklist. "I am the god of a brave new world" -- it's such a powerful line. I actually think the musical did a BETTER job than the anime when it comes to seeing Light as a morally gray character. Cold, heartless, power-hungry Light who only picked up the Death Note to attain power is breathtaking and makes for a beautiful story, but I really do like this portrayal of him, where his "I'm making the world a better place" isn't a thin excuse but rather a genuine desire. It makes his turn to Kira all the more tragic.
@Rutrakpm3 жыл бұрын
Finally someone who said it, I've been thinking that for months but couldn't quite put it into words, to me, anime Light's ideal of justice seems more like an excuse for becoming a "god", where musical Light's ideal are much better explained both in this song and in "Where is the Justice?"

There's a small detail I noticed in the chorus in how it changes and how that perfectly represents Light's transformation. The first time we hear the chorus he sings "The hardest rains, the coldest winds, are waiting for the hurricane" but the next time he sings the chorus Light sings "I will bring the rain, Iwill bring the wind. I am the mighty hurricane" which I find to be a really insightful little gem in the lyrics. When referring to the hurricane, it's quite obviously an exaggerated description of the power of the death note. Overtime, Light begins to confuse the powers of the death note as his own which leads him to believe that he is a God when in reality he is just a mortal who just happened to discover upon a divine weapon. Light begins to think that he is that weapon as time passes on which ultimately leads to his undoing. It's a wonderful representation of how his ego manifests and is amplified further the longer he has the death note.
@elisabethsun70597 ай бұрын
I noticed it too but I never thought about it that deeply. Mostly just recognizing the change, what it meant, and glossing over it. The musical’s character portrayal is pretty much on point.

I can’t get over how at the beginning the piano (symbolizing Light) is the heaviest instrument but as Light plans to use the Death Note the drums come in and start drowning out the piano, to the point where at the end of the song you can only hear the piano if you’re listening solely just for its part. It really shows how the Light his family and friends knew was drowned out and corrupted by the Death Note to become Kira, the serial killer feared and worshipped by many.

I love the growth of his character throughout the song. At the beginning, surprise followed by the realization, followed by Light talking himself into using this magical Death Note. Next, he begins riding the high of finally being able to make change while making excuses to himself, all while his god complex grows. Finally, he's lost in his own pride, ego, and all-consuming power. This is how you do a musical!
