Honestly the art style looks really nice even today. It's just an issue of low texture resolutions and perhaps outdated animations. If this gets a remaster like D2 did, it'll be a hit.

The in-game art style, yeah. The korean giant-boobs barely-even-an-armor "art" though, would have been enough to turn me off from the menus before reaching gameplay.

Thank you so much for this video! I was Crazylor back in those days, it's so fun to see how you had a similar experience to me growing up, Dark Eden is the bread and butter. Just like you I have a hard time finding any kind of replacement for it, I want to go back to private servers but I think their communities are pretty dead. I really hope it gets a reboot, I can see why you took your time with this too, as a part of the community I really hope this video makes some headway and maybe gives some dev incentive to learn about Dark Eden and lift it into the modern age with some QOL updates and it's core gameplay intact.

According to Namuwiki, Dark Eden 2 was in development since 2009 as D2 Online, however there were tons of internal problems in the studio when Yoo Tae-ho stepped down from involvement in the project and the project had to be restarted, especially after users were getting pissed at the game in the Naver cafe between high system requirements for a 2D game at the time and their ideas being stolen with no compensation in the user development board of that cafe. When the project restarted as Dark Eden 2, not only the development teams were split between that and the first Dark Eden, players pointed out how much of a shitty bargain bin MMO it was in both CBTs and quietly shelved the game.

I remember playing this game when I was young. Before I even watch the video, I remember an entire set of servers dying because so many hackers just kept insta killing players. So many players existed that went out of their way to hack and insta kill them. Eventually the norm became hacker vs hacker and who could kill who faster. It was rare to see anyone play this without hacks.

Gaming made the world community real for me.

A quick correction that is commonly assumed due to a mistake on the wikipedia page but Darkeden started production in 1999 and the first Alpha version of the game was available on June 15, 2000. I love this game, the pvp is really fun especially the bibble war. In my opinion, the problem with the game is that it focus too much on microtransactions and it is full p2w sadly, you need to spend too much money to make your set or play 24/7 and even thn it will take months to make an average set to not die instantly in pvp.

I would definitely play Dark Eden again especially if a group formed. Legend is going to release a classic version based on their server from 2009 but I don't know when. I do like Genesis though and it is cool Koreans play there. I liked how you mentioned that Dark Eden exposed us to other cultures. Originally I didn't even know words like, Sam(Buying), Pam(Selling), Bal(Shortened word for resurrect), were all Korean words. I definitely miss the game though. Started with the original international server, played the Thai server and Japanese server for a bit. Didn't care for the global versions that came later. Eventually settled on private servers and then I quit but I revisit on Genesis every so often. Thanks for the video. Best MMORPG ever made.

Schedule slippage of a lot of Asian MMOs is what led to their downfall. People just feel like the developers/publishers are no longer trying. They see the other versions getting updates and they get disappointed seeing how there's no telling when they will get those updates. I experienced the same with Phantasy Star Universe and Lunia. Inevitably, updates for both games in the west stopped before being shut down a few months later.

This is the video I never thought I would be watching! Thanks So good to know there are more people out there that love Dark Eden as much as I do, it was part of my youth too. I played all the servers that came out - except the Japanese and Korean. I was probably one of the first ones to play the mobile version of this game when it came out too, I still remember pre-ordering this at App Store and I have never done it before to any apps. I spent so much money with the mobile version that, in my opinion, is a very poor version of Dark Eden, only focused on making money. I feel there is very little gameplay in that thing, and very much gambling, like those types of games that you buy a magical box premium and RANDOMLY you get a good item - spoiler, that never comes so you need to spend loads of money. Personally, as I fan felt tremendously disappointed to wait that long and see that Softon again didnt understand their audience to make a game they would actually play for years again. Maybe that was indeed the end of Dark Eden. For now, we continue playing around in the private servers that, different than Softon, has done an amazing job to retain their players and listen to what they have to say about the game.
