#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

Back in like 2005 I had a bunch of friends in the neighborhood who played runescape, so I started it too. I have so many fond memories it's insane. Never had an experience like that in a game, it was just massive and playing multiplayer was new to me at the time, and the items felt like they had real value because you had to work so hard for some things and there was always that crazy expensive item that you really wanted and worked hard to get money for. It took over pretty much my entire childhood and I still play to this day although I don't have as much time anymore. I'll stop before I accidentally write an entire book in the comments but man I've never had so much fun in a video game since then, it frequently makes me tear up thinking of all the memories, way more than any other part of my childhood Even though I still play it doesn't feel the same as a lot of friends have stopped playing long ago, plus a lot of the fun came from the fact that you knew nothing about the game, now 15 years later I know most of the game like the back of my hand and there isn't much new to explore apart from updates

This was my first MMORPG ever! RuneScape Classic launched when I was in 8th grade. I fondly remember staying up all night mining and working my way up to making mithril gear. One night my father told me to go to bed during my freshman year of HS. I bargained by asking if I woke up early enough could I continue playing. Knowing how notoriously bad I was at waking up he agreed. Little did he know my addiction to RSC... That night I cranked my looney tunes alarmed clock & set it for 4AM. The next day I woke up around 4AM to start playing. He woke up befuddled at what was happening. He just sighed & went back to bed knowing a deal was deal while keeping his word.

@@nerdSlayerstudioss it was always a members-only skill... also it was weird that you fixated so much on the "class" system that was only in the game for the first year when it meant nothing and didn't restrict your character in anyway. Andrew Gower just thought it would be a good way to give players who wanted to jump into a certain playstyle or archetype (such as mining) a very (very) slight head-start. It was removed because everyone knew it was basically pointless from the outset.

How we sold lobster in the market, how we killed somebody in the wildy, it was an amazing time, but brief.

Thanks for this. If I recall correctly every account was copied to RS2 when it launched but there was a tool for a few weeks to transfer items back to RSC if players preferred. It was stressed this was temporary because the continued development of RS2 meant the two games would become incompatible. There were items in Classic that don't exist in RS2 and players were given coins for them (like sleeping bags). I think everyone had their runes doubled too when RS2 launched (Runecrafting was a brand new skill). Finally, for many years messaging between players online in RS2 and RSC was impossible. I don't have any online sources to cite for this information. Just first hand experience as a RSC/RS2 player very active at that time.

@@Nukestarmaster The issues with RS3 are way overstated. The whole lootbox thing is kinda annoying, sure, but it doesn't really get in the way of the actual gameplay. It's basically just a way to get more XP if you prefer wasting money to actually playing the game. And while EoC is complete ass with full manual casting, revolution mode fixes it. I play both RS3 and OSRS on and off, and overall i'd say i enjoy RS3 more. All the added content and quality of life features just make it a more pleasant experience. And it looks better, which is a nice bonus. I recommend giving it a fair shot. It's better now than when it launched.

The history of Runescape is a little convoluted, but here's the basic timeline: First, Runescape was created. Then, it received its massive graphical update in 03. The new game was known then as Runescape 2, or just Runescape, since it was the de facto default Runescape game. Later, through a series of hugely controversial/unpopular updates at the time, Runescape 2 became what is today known as Runescape 3 (or just Runescape). Because players were quitting due to different updates than one another, and this wasn't an "all at once" change, it's hard to nail down an exact date. But, most players left after the Evolution of Combat (EoC) update, which was in 2012. It is pretty easy to distinguish between RS2 and RS3, however, because there was another major graphical overhaul between those as well. Since players were quitting en masse starting around 2012 due to new changes, Jagex polled if players wanted to give Runescape a sort of "fresh start", using a 2007 backup server. This was massively popular, and this duplicate of Runescape 2, dubbed "Old School Runescape" was created. Sorry, but one of the few things I'm a stickler about is the fact that "Old School Runescape" never existed before 2013. It's just the name given to the mulligan that Jagex took after they made a lot of unpopular choices and started hemorrhaging players. F2P RS2 was my childhood. I lived this.

The poll was made in response to a RuneScape 2 private server that was being worked on by a third party. It was going to be called 2007scape and was supposed to be exactly how RuneScape was in 2007, no exp boosts or weird content like other private servers, just classic RS2. Jagex saw how many people were interested in this unofficial classic server, so they launched the poll to gauge interest in an official RS2 server, and that resulted in OSRS. This is also why the subreddit is r/2007scape despite OSRS being forked from a 2006 build of RuneScape; the subreddit was originally formed around the private server that was being worked on

I remember playing it in my middle school computer lab whenever I could, and asking my parents to pay the $20 monthly subscription to become a member (They refused, of course). I remember aiming for Black Armor and gear over Mithril, I remember the deserts, the quests, the regions, the annoying magic system that I rarely used, the crafting, the party hat I got legit... all that stuff. I also remember playing ALL of those old games you showed early on when you spoke of old browser games. God I feel old, but.... ah the memories. The only thing I wish... I remember there was one Jagex game that I loved playing, a minor one that I think involved some dungeon crawling, that I could never find again. Excellent video! Slight correction: RSC got phased out for RS2, and then RS2 was updated and rebranded to RS3. RS3 was never a new game, it's still technically the original RuneScape 2 under a new name and ton of new graphics. OSRS was a new game created in 2013 in response to the massive community outrage towards the updates that led to the rebranding to RS3, namely the Evolution of Combat. That update introduced combat abilities and a hotbar like those found in most MMOs, removing the point-and-click nature of the game's combat. OSRS started as a copy of the game from 2007, and has since eclipsed RS3 in popularity.

Great video! As far as Runescape documentaries are concerned, I'd recommend this video alongside rswillmissit's Runescape Historical Timeline video and Jagex's official Runescape documentary. I'll admit this video hit close to home for me because Runescape and Jagex are names I've been familiar with since I was a kid. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next DOAG!

Very interesting video and good job on it @nerdSlayer Studios. One very notable event in history of 2018 was that on May 2018, couple of days later after Jagex made the announcement of the shutdown, users could start preserving the game for eternity using the RSC+ client. This is of uttermost importance because the traditional private servers although claiming replication, are quite off from exact. For the love of the game and reconstructing there are some open source efforts such as Open RuneScape Classic (playable) and RSC- (which is more of POC at the moment), which base of the replays to get as close as possible the RSC we all loved.

I would honestly like to see a death of a game: Master x Master. That game was a gem and honestly imo better than any moba out there. The games were quick, it had everything from 3v3 to the full moba 5v5 to pve content to power up your heroes. but in NCsoft fashion it was another game they killed off

It always depresses me to no end seeing a hobbyist passion projects getting sold out to Chinese mega corps. I know the original devs were no longer involved at that point, but hot damn. Seeing this franchise go from "the free game you could play if you couldn't afford that other one" to "one of the greediest messes online" is really painful to watch.

I remember the free mmo options for 56k being Runescape and Tibia. (I realize that there were probably more options. There were muds of course, and in the 90s there were individual muds with more than 100 players online and active at peak hours) I do not regret my time with Runescape.

It's funny that this game was big during my high school days (when I was REALLY into online RPG's), but I never played it and didn't know anyone who did. I don't think I had even heard of it, believe it or not. The games I played during the early 2000's were usually Neverwinter Nights or...ugh...Ragnarok Online.

How did a group of siblings, create an MMO and run servers, and have them be stable to 10’s of thousands of people back in the early early 2000’s?! Modern triple AAA titles with a billion dollars can barely do that today! That is impressive.

I've been playing Runescape for over 15 years and have over 10000hrs playtime between RS3 and OSRS. It's a sandbox MMO that offers many different playstyles and very diverse content. The games don't really force you in any particular direction. If you want a casual time waster, you can train most skills with low effort, even combat, albeit at lower xp rates usually. If you want story, both games have a very unique quest system where each quest is like a self-contained story and often reward you with powerful items, unlocking new areas, and/ or unlocking new areas of the map. If you like PVM content, both games have a wide range of bosses and raids at all levels of difficulty. Some bosses on OSRS are even defeated through non-combat skilling.

So much of this played on the computers with CRTs in the library's computer lab back between Neopet sessions. I remember when Runescape 2 came out, members could beta test it... but it was too much for the computers at school, so many of my friends still played the original while I played Runescape 2 mostly at home. While Runescape just made me hate quests with a passion, it made me absolutely love grinding, gathering, and crafting. Being able to play it virtually anywhere was a huge thing back then.

Parents wouldn't allow me to have members but I managed to get to 92-92-99-96 level 112 purely F2P (Super Tonny). Also, I had a pure that was 76-40-99 with 95 range (Dead Vegito). Also, about a hundred level 5-40 pkers that would camp North Varrock and castle. Fun times...

So many great memories with this game. Played with my dad who was fighting in Afghanistan one week before he was killed in action. Yeah... the list goes on. I played RSCEmulation for years after they shut this down and was part of that small group who chose to go back to classic when they launched RS2. Funny enough, I chose to play ultima online afterward and (believe it or not) still play ultima online to this day. There's something about the community and gameplay that old school games presented which games have failed to do to this day. Will continue to wait for another game like it/them.

Man I miss those days. My toon's name was BuckFutter0 after the SNL skit. The only couple of things I remember is one time fighting in the wilderness up at the demons at the top right after it went with pay to play mechanics. I never did but was jumped by people who obviously had. I was level 70 maybe 79 and basically all I had skill wise was combat, a little mining, and some fishing/cooking. 2 level 90s, 3 80's came after me. I killed 2 of them before getting to where they couldn't attack me anymore. Good times. That and some guild - the guys name was penguin something. That dude was the crafter who had all the monies crafting adamite armor or whatever it was called. Then I was done playing - gave the toon to a friend - and it got removed for someone trying to sell it.

Im pretty certain that when you say at 14:22 that it would make runescape 2 "old school runescape" which is not true, oldschool was made after the fact from a backup and everyone had to create new characters, characters from Runescape 1 only exist still in Runescape 3. Sorry if someone mentioned this already, wasnt near the top comments.

As a note, rs2 isn't oldschool runescape. Osrs was made in response to the backlash of the changes to rs3 and Jagex released a legacy 2007 server in 2013 that they found and have supported and added new content to ever since. Osrs keeps many of the older game mechanics in tack while still releasing new content.
