I am so Fortunate to have lived in London circa mid 70s. Love British mystery shows. I studied theater many years ago and believe Brits have a superb command of the Thespian art.

I'm from NYC, but lived in London during the 1970's and early 80's and could never get over the quality of the acting in GB. I loved the mysteries, the plays, the comedies. Sadly, we really do not have as much to compare!! I missed it all when I moved back! (My twin was an actress and loved British dramas, etc., too.) Lynn in NYC

The scene in which we first meet the man who gets the Institute job, makes me a tad wistful. I know that pipe smoking is bad for the health of humans, and all other creatures (poor housecats get awful diseases from living with hard core cigarette smokers), but I remember when there were still some pipe smokers about. And pipe smoke is NOTHING like cigarettes - which just smell like burning trash, or cigars. Pipe smoke is usually beautifully aromatic. Smelling a bit of it wafting over on a breeze in a garden of an evening could be rather a delight.

Loved this in the 80s - love it today - good writing, well paced storyline and good restrained acting across the cast - very close to the novel and way better than the Martin Shaw 'Dagleish' stories. Not for those who expect lots of action or depressing Broadchurch-esque thrillers performed by actors who would do well in Victorian melodramas

I started my PD James experience by reading the books. Since I have watched this series and the newer one with Bertie Carvel as the inspector. Although I think Bertie plays the inspector more like the description in the books, this older series is better overall. Each book is presented in much more detail due to the larger number of episodes. Glad to be able to watch it again.

The later movies weren’t as long. They took fairly long books and condensed them into well paced mysteries without all the side stories. These older miniseries tried to encompass the entire novel. They were about 6 hours long. In some cases they really dragged a little. Sometimes reading something is so much better than watching it in movie form. I love PD James’ writing. It’s incredibly involved with a decent tradition mystery at it’s core.

I have read all of P.D.James novels and have been impressed with the depth and complexity of her writings. I think she more than any other writer elevated the mystery from genre fiction to the broader category of genuine literary fiction I am now equally impressed with the quality of the televised mysteries. The problem is I don't remember the novels clearly enough to know if the video representations, however well done, are faithful to the novels I do remember that Adam Dalgleish seemed a kinder fellow in the books. I've been surprised how harsh and unfair he seems on television, even to the extent of humiliating witnesses and denying suspected people the right to an attorney

When Dr. Edwin Lorrimer, a forensic scientist working at a private laboratory is found killed, Detective Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh is sent to investigate. Dalgliesh had been in the area a few months previously investigating the murder of a young woman found in an abandoned car. There are several suspects: Lorrimer's subordinate, Clifford Bradley, who despises him; the new head of the laboratory, Maxim Howarth, who is jealous of his sister's relationship with him; a colleague, Paul Middlemass, who had a fight with Lorrimer. There is also a gruff and likely unethical policeman who was on the grounds of the laboratory at the time of the killing and a local pathologist who is raising his two young children after his wife leaves him for another man. When one of the suspects is also murdered, Dalgliesh learns a key piece of information. - from IMDB

Comparing this version to the newer version with Martin Shaw: everything about the newer versions is different except I don't think Martin Shaw is the tall, dark handsome type that Dalgliesh is supposed to be. I got no advertising on Microsoft Edge ? Only thing that they've seemed to have done right this year ? Yes, yes, I'd rather watch a rerun from Agathie Christie , Poirot, or Inspector Morse, than any newly-filmed movie with a boring plot and poorly-casted characters! When I want a break from writing music, I don't want to watch car chases and people screaming in Hollywood to get attention!! Discovered " A Touch of Frost", some good Irish and Scottish accents, and English Eloquence, Trial and Tribulation, too; I need BELIEVABLE characters and I'm tired of the "unrealistic events" set forth too. Anything starring Michael Caine or Hal Holbrook , Pierce Brosen... TO NAME A FEW! Thank you to those REAL WRITERS ! "One Enchanted Evening, I Found an Old Friend, sung in Italian by Ana Marie Ceuca. For the children during the COVERTS: Devil be Gone With the Wind...for classical, "Opera at its Worst" and "I Ain't no Middleman" FredGold&LyndaFaye. Riverboat Queen, by Phil Bowen ,UK.

Might be your screen? Sometimes the stories are so good, AUDIO BOOK does the trick once you know what all of the characters look like ? @@lyndafaye6748 You are possibly joking? I have an excellent 4K screen and superb broadband. 360p resolution is pityful. You preference as to content is entirely a different subject. As it happens, I share with your taste in british TV-drama. I just wish the uploader could decide on a higher resolution.

Hmmm, talk about poorly-considered casting! Geoffrey Palmer is one of the finest satirical COMIC actors the UK has ever produced. Why on EARTH would his agent put him forward for a modern murder mystery with Roy Marsden, of all people!!! LOL

What is wrong with Marsden?

Personally I think Geoffrey Palmer does a good job of portraying the character,a dull sexually repressed scientist who becomes obsessed with an awful woman . I too am used to seeing him in As Time Goes By .

@MrLyndarenaud nothing wrong with Mardsen. The op is criticizing Palmer.

There's some good music including the catchy theme, but this is clearly no Sweeney or no Morse. Humorless, not particularly bright acting, no terribly entertaining script, no witty exchanges of one liners, no "hidden" lessons about classical music, no white Volvo as the Saint's or wine-colored Jag as Morse's... It lacks a little bit of this and that in nearly all these points. So, no wonder it didn't become a smash hit, no surprise it reached a cult status as let's say The Avengers... So: for me this is an OK series (6/10), but lacking the humor, the action, the glam etc. that could have lifted it to a higher status.

Dalgliesh was a great sleuth.

I think you are overthinking it. P. D. James was not a Hollywood novelist/scriptwriter. Open your mind.

Frank Hodges The Sweeney was an action show. I think Morse and Dalgliesh were along the same lines since they were both mystery dramas.

+Frank Hodges I suggest you watch the newer programmes by BBC starring Martin Shaw. They are excellent.

Moody Morse and Riveting Sweeney...when I finally was turned onto those...I so miss the 60s and 70s...we were so much more fun then.
