Elvis never used illegal drugs but prescribed medication because he was very sick man, especially last few years of his life. He had glaucoma, lungs and liver problems, twisted colon, severe insomnia and other health issues. It makes me so mad when people talking about his drug abuse but never about his health problems and why he was using so many meds

Thanks for showing this; to be perfectly honest, I don't recall suggesting this & I don't want to take away the thanks to whoever did suggest it. But either way, it's another good insight into all the goings on. Before Elvis we were listening to our parents' music -- all the dullness of that era -- & when Elvis arrived, we finally had our own music, much to the horror of many adults. ERROR: Gladys was 46 when she passed away on Aug. 14, 1958 not 42. The surprising thing is that the reporter Jackson Bain was from Memphis & reporting from NBC News in Memphis.

............. more flowers were sent to the funeral via national flower services(Teleflora - FTD, etc) then had ever been shipped to a funeral in the United States - as far as I can determine, that record stands to this date!!!

Yes my brother in law sent me some info about it the other day.... The record for the most flowers sold in a single day in the United States was set on August 17, 1977, the day after Elvis Presley died. Here are some details about the record-breaking day: 3,116 floral arrangements were delivered Some fans sent arrangements in the shape of musical notes, hearts, and guitars Memphis ran out of flowers and had to ship more in from across the country The grounds of Forest Hill Cemetery were described as a "sea of flowers" by an Associated Press reporter

Elvis' mom Gladys passed away aged 46 on August 14, 1958. The reason why many thought she was 42 when she died, was that she and Elvis' dad Vernon had fibbed on their marriage license about their ages. Elvis' parents Vernon Elvis Presley and Gladys Love Smith got married when Vernon was 17 and Gladys 21. They fibbed on their wedding license, though that Vernon was older than Gladys. They'd eloped to get married in the County of Pontotoc and signed that Vernon was 22 and Gladys was 19. That was on June 17, 1933. Vernon was born April 10, 1916 and Gladys was born April 25, 1912. Elvis was born January 8, 1935, making Vernon still 18, 3 months away from his 19th birthday. Gladys was 22, 3 months shy of 23. Elvis' twin Jesse Garon was stillborn. Gladys passed away aged 46 on August 14, 1958. She fell ill with hepatitis, due to her drinking habit and had to be admitted to Memphis Methodist Hospital August 10, 1958, while Elvis was at basic training in Texas. On August 13, Elvis flew into Memphis and went straight to the bedside of his ailing mother, after having been granted an emergency 7-day leave from his army station at Fort Hood. He was just in time, because Gladys Presley died the next day aged 46. Elvis returned to Fort Hood on August 24. After training at Fort Hood, Elvis was assigned to the 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 32nd Armor, 3rd Armored Division in Friedberg, West Germany. He left Fort Hood on September 19, headed for Brooklyn Army Terminal in New York where he and his division would ship out to West Germany on September 22. He spent the next 17 months from arrival on October 1, 1958 in Germany until March 2, 1960 when he left by plane and arrived back in the USA on March 3, 1960. Vernon passed away 2 years after Elvis' death, on June 16, 1979 aged 63.

@@angelosworld01 It was Ginger who went to check on him because he was in the bathroom for a very long time & found him face down on the floor. She called for help. Joe Esposito came up, turned him over & tried to revive him even tho' he said he realized he was already dead. But it isn't just you being misinformed. There's tons of bad & wrong information surrounding Elvis -- it's been going on for yrs. & will never get straightened out. Remember -- only one person knows the truth about his life & that person left this earth on Aug. 16, 1977.

About Elvis' addiction: Elvis got addicted in the army because the brass was afraid Elvis (and other soldiers who had to stand guard in the icy German winters) might fall asleep on watch in the freezing temperatures, so he got his first uppers while serving in the US army. It snowballed after that when he was back in civilian life and showbiz. He had a doctor in every state (and even several cities per state) who would provide him with all the prescription medication he wanted to have and later needed to sort of function. Such a waste of such a fine specimen. He died at 42, but the state of his body/organs was that of an 80-year-old. Very sad. Elvis would sometimes cause an injury or wound to himself to get certain prescription drugs. He had medical books that described all kinds of medications, which to combine with which etc. that he almost knew by heart; he'd made a whole study of it. He did have a genetic link to heart disease, but he undermined and damaged his health by over using prescription drugs for ailments he did not have, thereby causing real medical issues like a blocked colon, hypertension etc. His intestines had been leaking into his abdomen for some considerable time. He wasn't just constipated, his intestines did not work normally anymore because of the massive amounts of prescription drugs he had been abusing for decades. The placebo intervention by Dr Nick was too little, too late. kzbin.info/www/bejne/noPUq6qAf959ock As far as I know, there weren't any real rehab centers as we know them today, back then. His immediate circle of family, friends and employees were all afraid and too uneducated (and probably selfish, not wanting to lose their meal ticket, although very short sighted because that attitude killed their meal ticket prematurely) to do something about it. Elvis' finances were in the toilet at the time of his death. The colonel got 50% of what Elvis earned and all personnel was paid out of Elvis' 50%. Add to that that Elvis was way too generous, even to strangers, and there you have it. Also: people usually criticize the bodyguards who wrote the book Elvis What Happened? But they should also realize that Joe Esposito was a big enabler (and covered up the scene after Elvis' death. He has told at least 3 versions of what happened that fateful day) and Jerry Schilling is totally in Priscilla's pocket (which means going along with falsification of many Elvis facts to suit her storyline; they basically rewrote Elvis history on several points). Dave Hebler (one of the three bodyguards who wrote "Elvis what happened?" recently had interesting things to say kzbin.info/www/bejne/laOWnIOPr9h4irM

I don't think there were rehab centers as we have today. A person who was addicted would likely have to attend a regular hospital or something like a sanitorium. Many great stars were addicted to "uppers" and "downers" and who knows what else. They were encouraged to take these pills to keep them "on schedule" or even diet pills to make them lose weight. Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe. In any event, Elvis didn't want to hear about his addictions and wouldn't have agreed to any kind of rehab. One thing is sure, the "colonel" took complete advantage of him, and practically stole him blind. The colonel was a huge gambler and wasn't really a colonel. Pretty much a con artist. But Elvis was too far gone. He wouldn't ever have gone to rehab. Very sad, really. He was a real enigma. But in the end, he was rather insane. His fans idolized him and many, to this day, don't believe he died on that fateful day. His die-hard fans, and there are lots, would never want to hear anything bad about him. He was quite a tragic figure but he was very pure in his love for his music.

Regarding the book "Elvis what happened?": My opinion on "the book" and Red, Sonny and Dave has always been that I believed them, but that their timing was off as far as writing/publishing their book was concerned. Simply because people would automatically assume the book was the action of employees, disgruntled because they were fired. If they had published their book and had gotten fired afterwards, things would have played out much differently, because then Elvis would have had a lot to explain and people would have started looking at him and his behavior differently, too. Let's face it: Elvis by that time did NOT look good and when he spoke, did not sound good, either. I think those around him would have advised against suing the three, because if Elvis would have had to appear in court (like in a libel case) he - like Michael Jackson decades later - would NOT have been able to convince a jury and a court that what was written about his (prescription) drug abuse, was not true. I do believe that, especially Red and Sonny who had known Elvis since the absolute peak of his life career wise and personal life wise, were internally conflicted on how to try and stop Elvis' downward spiral. All 3 men, Red, Sonny, Dave (and also the rest of the Memphis Mafia) have said they, too, often had to take pills if only to keep up with Elvis. So, in some ways, the people around Elvis saw his deterioration and at the same time knew they were taking some of the same things that Elvis was taking, which must have set off alarm bells inside them "I don't want to end up like him". I've been an Elvis fan for decades and anybody with working eyes and ears and common sense could see the deterioration in Elvis the last 5-7 years of his life. I think many Elvis fans could not help but put Elvis on a pedestal, make their own fantasy version of him that was pretty much perfect. Perfection does not exist and like Elvis said himself "The image is one thing and the human being is another...it's very hard to live up to an image.” The over use/abuse by Elvis of his prescription drugs, the "doctor shopping" etc. changed his behavior and personality. It's actually quite miraculous that nobody got seriously injured, or worse, whenever Elvis (after self medicating) would randomly shoot at stuff, both in and outside the house or hotel rooms.
