Gerhard Palitzsch was born on the 17th of June 1913 in the village of Grossopitz, near Dresden, then part of the German Empire. He was a farmer by profession, got married to a woman named Luise and the marriage produced 2 children - a daughter Helga and a son Lothe.
On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg.
In March 1933, the 19 year old Palitzsch joined the Nazi Party and the SS. The same year he started to work as a guard at concentration camps at Oranienburg and then Lichtenburg. In 1936 he was transferred to Sachsenhausen where he worked first as a block leader.
