Well, that depends on how charismatic & believable he was. You also have to consider the mindset and the thinking process of the people at the time, the way everything is phrased & said, this took place around the time when Australia was still a part of the British Empire and was just a bunch of colonies & a place for the Brits to send convicted people to, they could have assumed the man was a butcher (also given that calling a police officer a “pig” might have not been common until later in history).

This reminds me of a story that was passed down our family, 6 people who were all in the same family who all killed and assisted in homicide, having that been done the family was sentenced to die by a noose, having the chair pulled out. (Background info) the family had been living on a farm where they pull carts full of stuff, by THIER NECKS. (Background info over) 4 of the family members had been hung, leaving billy yank and Sarah yank, then billy had knew he was going to die, he walked up to the stand and put his neck into the noose. The chair had been pulled and the crowd roared, but then, billies leg had started kicking causing him to swing left and right! As my great great grandma said, the man had been smiling the whole time and laughing. (1867)

tips to stay alive during hangings (suicides, executions) 1) do neck exercises to strengthen neck muscles, like rolling head around, lifting weights using head, pullings heavy loads with rope by your head. then you will notice neck muscles bulging out, and your neck would easily be able to withstand the weight of your whole body. 2) as soon as the trap doors open under your feet, fold or extend your legs, this will minimize the drop force by creating an almost levitating effect, this will slow down your fall, while your tough neck muscles hold your body weight.
