note that the second Death Star's superlaser had two firing modes instead of the original DS-1's single mode. Mode 1 was the planet killing super beam which still had a much faster recharge rate than the original. Mode 2 was designed to enable the DS-2 to target large Starships with a much finer target tracking system attached. this low power mode enabled it to fire at a rate unheard of and justifiably feared by the Rebel Fleet as no shield system could hope to stop it. DS-1's superlaser could not engage Large Starships or Starbases as it's targeting system was not fine enough to achieve a lock on such small targets. the overall defense net of DS-2 was far tighter and had DS-2 been completed, would not have been threatened by the Rebel Fleet. the naturally occurring Gravity Well generated by both DS bases was enough to be measured on instruments, but not of sufficient intensity to interfere with TIE Fighter operations or the operation of Capital Ships in close proximity. DS-1's diameter was 120km. DS-2's was 160km. roughly the size of a decent Asteroid.

actually the diameter of the DS-1 was 160km and the diameter of the DS-2 was 200km. Also the DS-1 didn't have 1 mode. It could be used at a lower power as seen in Rogue One with the destruction of Jedha and Scarif.

Basically the Death Star I came from the CIS it was their idea, and they started the Death Star I some. The CIS also had a huge Green cyber Crystal during the Clone wars. Though Imagine if the Death Star plans were not in the hands of Sidious. Imagine that the CIS kept the Death Star I plans, managed to complete it , secure it, protect it and keep it a secret. The CIS would probably put many different defensive and offensive weapons on the Death Star I . Like many Ion Cannons, Quad Turbo Lasers on it, Proton torpedo missle retrackable pods on it, Laser twin Turbo lasers on it, and other things on it. While keeping it well protected. Also have all the CIS droid types vehicles, Hover tanks, Walkers, Tanks Starfighters, bombers, Interceptors in the Death Star. Starwars Legends The CIS faction would have Millions or even Billions Of many unique Space Ships of Corvets, Frigates, Carriers, Destoyers, Dreadnaughts, Battle Cruisers, Support ships, and others) Take Starwars Legends the CIS had over Quadrillons or even Quirillions of droids. The CIS would also create other Super mini weapons. And put it next to their main key planets. The CIS Faction probably would of been smarter and more wise comapred to the empire when using super weapons . To also let you know the CIS did create the Proto type Death Star and did have the Proto Death Star.

"Our cruisers can't repel firepower of that magnitude!" -- Admiral Ackbar (SW:RotJ) For those commenting about the exhaust port being so small vs flying a ship into the second Death Star -- the second Death Star was incomplete, that's why a ship could fly into it. If the second Death Star was complete, it was to not have the port, and the openings large enough for a ship to enter would be limited to docking ports and bays.

yeah you're right about a few test fires. at least in the old canon novel Death Star I'm pretty sure they said they fired it a few times before Alderaan. but that's old news now and doesn't count anymore. but you would have to think they would test it before they attempted to destroy a planet. just imagine if Tarkin and Vader had Leia captive and were for int her to watch them destroy Alderaan and nothing happened when they said fire haha.... awkward!!!

My theory on why the second Deathstar was built faster than the first. The first Deathstar was top top secret, and the Empire had war debt, so it could only be paid for a bit at a time. For the second Deathstar, they had a check from the insurance company for the first Deathstar. 😊

The DS-1 took 20 years to make mainly due to it being completely new technology and the DS-2 only took 3 years is because the Empire basically already knew how to make everything.

Really good in depth info on both Death Star's. I have always had these two questions: 1. Did the Death Star have a hypedrive. I am assuming so since the first Death Star was able to move from system to system (Alderaan and then to Dantooine). But where are the engines and what are the ramifications of moving something the size of a moon through hyperspace. 2. This one is more of a "what if". What would have happened if the Empire used the resources to create the Death Stars to instead exponentially expand their fleet? Seems that would make more strategic sense. They would have been able to dominate the Rebellion and there wouldn't be one central target for the Rebels to attack. Think tens of thousands of star destroyers and super star destroyers instead of 2 super weapons. Maybe crewing all of those Star Destroyers was an obstacle.

Smaller ships can't generate the energy necessary to destroy a planet. A single Star Destroyer can destroy the surface of a planet, but not much more.

Ships a bit longer than the average Star Destroyer, no other weapons but some kind of "super laser" fixed along the center 'spinal' structure. Possibly slap in another reactor and coolant reservoir, maybe a set of point defense turrets. Seeing as it's just one ship, there would have to be dozens that could lock together or have some sort of wireless energy sharing. And these would have no main batteries so they would need either an escort fleet or ship. Or hell, they could just refit existing bellator start dreadnoughts.

Just like Ken Lay with Enron, it's all Palpatine's fault for losing DS2, and his Empire. For Palpatine knew the project was not yet complete, and even with an operational superlaser, was still vulnerable. But despite the high risk, he allowed the Alliance spies to find out where the project was, hoping to lure the Rebels into one gigantic trap, and thus finally crush them. And also likely obtain Luke Skywalker in the process. Yet thanks to the Ewok allies, shield station, DS2, and Palpatine were all destroyed! Just like with Enron, if they had been patient for a few years, kept all operations sound and complete, and not pulled in so much attention before their project was completed, Empire (and Enron) would have been unstoppable!! Face the sad fact people, YOU CANNOT SURVIVE ON BORROWED TIME!

Halpin2006 well said the Emperor acted far too prematurely like a chess player who boldly goes for checkmate and gets mated himself. The emperor was far too impatient and had he waited long enough he could have had the Death Star 2 completed and lured the Rebel Alliance into a better trap with less chance for counter-play and the very things the Emperor accused Luke of applied to him as he attempted to kill him with his force lightning, to pay the price for the lack of vision, feeble skills no match for the light side and so forth. The Emperor underestimated the nature of the rebel alliance and died in the process and the Empire never recovered from it. Plus as others have pointed out, the Empire would have been better off investing in more ships and weaponry so they would be harder to destroy and more dangerous and to save these massive resources for other projects. And however you can’t say that as the greatest fault lay in the leadership of the Empire and for that they lost badly as they did.

I understand that for dramatic effect, The Force Awakens needed a new Death Star-like superweapon, but for all the years of research, development, and work that would go into something like that, we only see each of those three fire off one or two shots before being destroyed. Honestly, it kinda takes the threat out of it all. What about the Sun Crusher, though? That'd be something. One tiny little ship zipping around the galaxy destroying star systems. Now THAT is scary. I think there may be an additional point about the DS2 that can explain the quick build time & it's vulnerability. Namely, that DS2 was deployed *before* it was finished. We know Emperor Palpatine was unhappy with the pace of the DS1 build, so it does not seem unreasonable that he ordered the DS2 super-laser be completed before the base's defense & support systems were completed.

If you read any of the many Star Wars novels the 2nd Death Star is able to fire the main laser every 3 min. at a lower power setting o destroy capital ships. To destroy a planet takes and full 24 hour charge. Also there is a 3 experimental version at a hidden Empire base near Kessel it is hidden in a gravity eddy. The Sun Crusher was developed at that base. Nice video I gave it a thumbs up.

7:35 The Reload was faster but not that much, yes the Original death star needed to reload 24 hours but only after it destroyed alderan with a 100% charged shot. The Second Death Star on the other Hand only attacked with like 5-10% because the targets were capital ships not Planets

Instead of a weapon of mass destruction how about a vacation get away destination, a space cruise ship the size of a small moon. This way the Empire recover all the credits they spent making it instead of just constantly spending credits and never getting any revenue back from their creations.

I like the idea of the final order using star destroyers to destroy planets. Having a fleet of that is way better than just a station. If one star destroyer is blown up, another one is around. Also it makes sense that technology would get better and smaller over time. The only problem is they had the star killed base already. I feel that if they did not have star killed base then the whole planet destroying thing would not feel old. I would not mention planet destroyers in the sequel trilogy except for the final movie.

To be honest, the 2nd one being built more quickly makes sense. They werent starting from scratch with researching/creating the new technology needed to build the 1st one. They had the blueprints, schematics etc of the 1st one and all that was changed was the size and the efficiency of the main weapon.

Everyone mentions the superlasers. But every source mentions thousands of turbolasers. If you fire all the turbolasers that can hit 1 target in 1 salvo, it's going to lose shields and probably die in 1 salvo. Or a DS Base Delta Zeroing a planet, not wasting a super shot. Thrawn could have done so much more with one, after he was ordered to ignore the "such a waste of resources" issue and had to command it.

Orbital bombardment seemed to work just fine for depopulating planets and I can only wonder how many Star Destroyers or Super Star Destroyers they could have made instead. Starkiller base on the other hand, is an awesome 'game ending' interstellar artillery.

Star destroyers don't destroy planets, orbital bombardment doesn't really kill the entire population if there under ground, also take longer for there campaign, and can take casualties from enemy fire, a Death Star is far from the planet and doesn't take as long, Making it harder for the target to do anything about it. If it wasn't for its one weakness in a new hope, then the Rebels would of needed a fleet of ships to take it down, even then wouldn't really do any crippling damage, making it far stronger than many star destroyers.

Joe Hopwood There are several instances where orbital bombardment was used to exterminate all life on a planet and render it uninhabitable in Legends. And apparently it has also been carried over to Disney cannon as well (Base Delta Zero). No, the Death Star also has to get close to it's target as well -I haven't seen any numbers anywhere but Alderaan was huge from the perceptive of DS when firing and the same was true of the Rebel Fleet. Based on the apparent size of the DS targets from it's POV, It is not unreasonable to say that the DS has to be approximately in orbit to fire. The DS can only attack so many targets in a time frame and the vast majority of it's firepower would be wasted as 'overkill', where as an equivalent fleet of Star Destroyers can put all of their fire power on their 1 target. I don't know how much damage a DS can take and remain operational but lets say 50% is the limit. If you lost 50% of the Star Destroyer fleet -you would still have the other 50%, however if your DS took 50% damage -your fight is over; even though you still have 50% of the DS left. Furthermore DSs can only be in one place at a time, which is kind of ridiculous given that the empire spanned a galaxy and it was fighting an insurgency. And then there is the whole putting so much resources, manpower -including scientists/engineers and High ranking officers on an untested system....twice...
