If you want to know what life was REALLY like on the Death Star, read the new Novel "Lost Stars" by Claudia Grey. It follows a small group of Imperial characters, and includes Chapters in which they are living on the Death Star. I can tell you that there were many people on board the Death Star who actually had no idea about the Superweapon! When Alderaan was destroyed, many Imperials tried to find ways to escape the Death Star, believing that the Empire had committed an act of terror. Many of these innocent people were not able to escape before the Death Star's destruction!

it was so stupid how the first death star were destroyed. I mean its a marvel already how an entire moon size battlestation has only 1 exhaust port but also the size of a wombat (or rat im guessing in our terms), also that the missile Luke fires can turn 90 degrees, and go down it which doesn't explode from the tremendous amount of heat coming from that exhaust port or even be pushed out by the exhaust being ejected. Sure there is the force and all but Luke was not as strong then and no way could he have encased the missile in a force shield for so long and for so far away and maintain it. This was before Dagoba so he couldn't even lift an X wing yet. In real life, even if Luke made the shot, the missile would have exploded prematurely and the station would only get a scratch at most.

Christian Quiles yea, but its also effected by distance. The death star explodes after luke is already flying away. He would have to be concentrating the entire time and you clearly see him celebrating when the missile goes in, thus loses the concentration. Plus, he is still so inexperienced in the force. His feat can only be accomplished by a Jedi Master and Luke clearly isn't that good yet.

The size of the DS makes its destruction even more stupid. That is the only thing I never liked about episode 4. The rebels attacked it with only 2-3 squadrons of fighters and bombers. The DS had thousands of fighters on it + the size of it allows it to even house an internal shipyard. However the empire just launched about the same number of fighters to fight them off. If I was the commander of it , I would of scrambled at least a 1/4 of all my fighters to keep them from even closing the DS. With the amount of fighters they had , the rebels should had to fight at least 50:1 ratio , instead ....

mowtow90 Actually, it was arrogance that allowed the Rebel strike force to get so close. The turbolaser operators would have known that they couldn't handle small and manueverable spacecraft. Some TIEs should have been on CAP already and reinforced as soon as the Rebels were detected by sensors. Then more TIEs are launched to overwhelm the Rebels. The Rebels should have been completely destroyed. Tarkin's arrogance apparently had filtered down to the lower ranked commanders. Darth Vader (an accomplished fighter pilot himself) had to order the fighters out and even he couldn't get more fighters launched. Once the Imperials had figured out what the Rebels were after, they should have launched several squadrons of TIEs just to guard the exhaust port and the trench.

The Death Star I was a sound engieer design. people forget that the exhaust port was made to push out heat for the reactor to cool. no different than vents on the side of a powerful laptop. so the fact that two proton torpedos went down an exhaust port which usually pushes air out goes straight down to blow up the station was not the empires fault or the engineers fault. they didn't plan to build a ship that was "force" proof
