DS dialogue be like: deadman: sam, do you know [thing]? sam: [thing]? deadman: yes, [thing]. it's [simple explanation of [thing]] sam: oh, right. For those worried about spoilers. The video does not spoils the story at all, however some minor situational or environmental spoilers are present. Not that any of these haven't been shown elsewhere, or even on the official trailers, but be aware they are here and avoid them if you prefer to discover all the gameplay by your own. You can safely listen to the video without watching and still a great analysis.

Man, that story you told about getting your bike up and running. I opened my video with a similar story and described it as a "cruel cosmic joke", which a lot of people took to mean that I hated the game, that I was blaming it for some kind of terrible experience and I'm like no! It was a legitimately funny joke! Glad I wasn't alone in finding actual humour in misfortune while playing this game.

I think one of the best ideas the game has is their "Game Over". Because Sam is essentially UPS Jesus it's actually really rare one sees a game over screen. The only times I could trigger a fail state in my 100 hour Hard playthrough was getting shot/exploded to death, getting caught by BT's in an area where there's been a voidout caused by you, or breaking irreplaceable cargo (i.e humans). Unless I forgot something, every other instance of failure cause Sam to "Repatriate", a mission being marked as failed for 12 hours, or getting knocked unconscious and moved to another location. Even killing someone or losing the BT bosses, which pretty much creates a nuke in DS universe, causes permanent consequences but no game over. I personally love it; Many games suffer from the problem of save scumming away mistakes, but in DS I never reloaded my save once cause failure feels inevitable in this post-post-apocalyptic world. One more mistake won't matter too much. P.S: I literally shouted "C'MON KOJIMA YOU CAN'T DO THIS" when Sam said that Mario & Princess Peach line, cause I thought the game was gonna end on that note. Also, that email on asexuality was so easy to fix, just say people are shit-scared to go outside and make relationships cause rain and ghost could kill you in a second; The Death Stranding itself didn't mind control people to not fuck, the consequences of it caused natural human reactions and reasons to not fuck.

It's that simple. Game of the year for me, for the extreme quality and courage to be something crazy and different in a industry where few people has the balls to truly inovate and where a big part of the players are whiny spoiled brats. Right? I feel like most gamers pass Kojima off as pretentious and a scam artist, but I just think he is really passionate about video games as a storytelling medium and that he just really wants to progress and move it forward in an industry run by people who copy and paste what sells over and over. I’ll agree that sometimes he’ll get a little self indulgent with his writing, but that’s kind of what gives his games so much charm and quirkiness, because there is something you get from Kojima’s games that you just can’t find anywhere else on the market. His games are just so out there that they put a smile on my face whenever I play them.

I know this video came out two years ago and this comment will be seen by few, but I do want to say that Koji Pro added an addendum in Death Stranding Director's Cut to the "An Asexual World" interview basically saying that what it said was wrong and ignorant. As an ace person myself, seeing that they had added that made me happy. The fact that they didn't remove it and try to hide it shows honesty and an open mindedness that you don't see a lot. I mean, it makes sense with the themes of change, understanding, and connection. Also when I read the entry it definitely felt like it was more connected to NEET culture like you said. Either way, It's very obvious that there's a fundamental misunderstanding of sexual orientations that aren't the LGB part of the acronym. You were definitely right about the "cult following" aspect. I was one of the ones who fell in love with the game, but I knew nothing about it or Kojima and his games beforehand which I feel like gave me a different perspective. Death Stranding made me cry and related to me in a way nothing else had before. DS honestly changed me a bit as a person. Wanting to be left alone, hating everyone, parental absence. Hell, even down to the fear of being touched and the childhood isolation. It's weird seeing someone in a game that so closely mirrors you. Despite the massive age difference (I'm 18...actually played it the day after my 18th bday) Sam and I have had a very similar emotional journey. DS was a big part in making me realize the importance of human connection, along with therapy of course. It's been almost a year since I've played the game and I enjoy it just as much now as I did with it during my first playthrough. It isn't for everyone, but it wouldn't be the same if it was.

I’m going to memorize this video. I will not find a better explanation on why I had so much fun with this game. After a couple of hours in you memorize the terrain. So you can to strategize how to get from point a to point b while carrying the cargo. “So I’ll bring 1 ladder, 1 construction thingy just in case, hemo granades won’t be needed but I will fight some cargo cultists. And let’s carry a bit of metal or ceramics to build that road” Or even zip lining between the dementors like “try to catch me up here lol” I’m glad games are divisive. I wouldn’t want to play games that are always trying to accommodate to everyone’s play style. I loved this game. I thoroughly enjoyed your essay. Also the whole game is an omage to mario....BB is a 1up, a litteral extra life. Sam wears a hat with his name on it just like Mario. Jumping and platforming is a big part of this game as well. Mario64 = main obj is to get from A to B while exploring the environment, using your controls (that are more detailed to control your character then any other 3rd person action game...) Same with DS. The exo suits are mario power ups, power suit = metal mario, speed suit = star mario, etc. There are too many more examples to name, like Amaile is a mix between Maria from Silent Hill 2 (with the color red) and Princess Peach (cuz of the dress she wears)

This game is very special and dear and I really loved it!! I agree with your points and just wanted to comment on the "I brought you a metaphor" stuff cause this is something that's been in my head for a while and I don't see anyone else saying it but... between all the "EAT SOME CRYPTOBIOTE SAM" and the "I'm not that Fragile" scenes... Fragile is really kind of a dork. I had a laugh with most of her scenes.

The more you speak of it, the more it sounds like one of my favourite games "spintires: mudrunner". An amazing game where you drive huge Russian trucks carrying logs in the syberian woods. The gameplay is basically puzzling out the traversal of the terrain So, yeah, I'll probably love death stranding (But I'll have to wait for the PC release if it ever comes). BTW, you should try mudrunner.

This is a comment I wrote in Writing in games video, I copy-pasted so I don't have to repeat my self and because I believe this is a good view I got about the game I want to share with you: this game is great I love it truly, but I understand why people hate it, this game was being sold as the next epic silent hill ex narrative game, not a supply and demand fed ex simulator but I think that's why I love this game, I love games where the mechanics and the world-building are connected to build an atmosphere where a simple job is turn by the world and the demand of you to complete set demand could mean life or death I love feeling the dread of having to scan my area for better pathways while struggling to keep balance, I like to be punished for being reckless but rewarded for being clever, this is a game build for simulator fans like me with the added post-apocalypse futurism I love this game I truly do, but I do understand why people hate it, it was sold as something else to fans of a genre this game doesn't belong in and it sucks that is receiving bad reviews because I want more games like this, I would like a post-apocalypse delivery service in Mad Max, having to deal with a very hostile desert full of environmental hazards and Warboys all while trying to deliver supplies to a settlement that needs it badly I know this is not something for everyone, but one thing that dead stranding does well is making you important without having to overpower you with crazy outlandish things and instead makes you human and makes a very simple job (which in reality is overlooked by people for how important it truly is for civilization) something of great importance

I've been holding off on watching this review as i was maxing out every facility. That being said i'm beyond glad i did so because you hit the nail on the head with this video. Excellent writing on your behalf and i'm going to now make sure i nuke the subscribe button so i can be here for more elegantly executed vids.

I love how these little stories develop on each trip, losing your shit in the river and having to fight MULEs for it, trying to recharge that truck you stupidly tried to take off-road, running to the nearest base barefoot. You've got infinite possible hours of unscripted content as dramatically compelling and as funny as any linear story mission.

Regarding the PCC, just press down on the dpad while you're holding L2. It tells you there right on the screen. Infact any contextual controls are literally always shown right in the center of the screen anytime they are relevant, and you can really only press or hold like 2-3 buttons for anything so theres not that much to try.

@@GreenEyedDazzler not necessarily because the reason is so you can do more actions with less buttons, it just requires clean, calculated inputs. Once you get them you can get quite amazing gameplay going. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipbVgpqpgaZmp5I I really don't see anyone else pulling things off like this, this was my payoff and why I love this game. The action can rival the best KP game if you mix the many mechanics.

@@GreenEyedDazzler he means because in DS you can't do contextual things if the control prompt isn't there at all. So you might try to pick up crystals (square) but the prompt isn't there yet so you punch the air (also square) and fall off a cliff or something.

I wrote this comment on several DS reviews already, but it bears repeating considering Thor’s perspective and the game’s own thematic nature: DS cured my depression, twice. Not like it helped me forget about it until I get better; it literally took it away and made me feel connected to my own society.

I love that the ending *major spoilers* Has Sam abandon the UCA, severing the (at times rather hollow) connections you've been building throughout the game in favor of living outside of society with Lou. Incredibly satisfying after learning how Sam's been manipulated his whole life by his adoptive mother and the government who robbed him of his family.

Great video, glad to hear someone talk about DS being the first real "Walking Simulator" as opposed to one of those... First Person Point And Click Narrative Games? Also I had to laugh at 33:28, you explaining how cinematic and cohesive the game is, while gameplay of Sam carrying Bridget is shown. All fine, but then you notice that Sam is prepared to piss at any moment should a BT show up 😂

The first review of this game on KZbin I've seen that doesn't have the player stumbling endlessly, carrying random, unsorted cargo, driving vehicles relentlessly into rocks, then attacking the game because "shitty walking simulator that takes effort and fuck that". Its infuriating the number of people who will be talked out of trying one of the most unique, modern gaming experiences because KZbinrs are lazy and just want to parrot the opinions they think will get them views. Thank you for actually playing the game and being honest.

What I find funny is that for over a decade, every time a developer announces a new sequel or introduces a new IP, we get the standard "This isn't going to be like the games that came before it" line. And if we're being honest, that's so rarely the case, that I think we've grown number to the idea of someone we are very familiar with doing something different, that we disregard it whenever it’s said. And at least we've learned to see through the that line as "obligatory corporate-speak". It's just something 'they' have to say. BUT, as soon as a developer does try to go off of the beaten path (at least in part, because there's actually a fair bit of Metal Gear DNA all over Death Stranding) we admonish them for not adhering to our preconceived expectations which are totally based off of their previous works. Yet we were outright told this wouldn’t fall in line with them. That doesn’t mean Death Steanding is ‘perfect’, because it’s FAR from it, in my opinion. But it’s something unique, and still OBVIOUSLY Kojima, it just isn’t Metal Gear. And that’s what I believe most people were thinking Death Stranding was. A new Metal Gear game in a post-apocalyptic, Lovecraftian shell. It isn’t quite that... but on its own merits it’s a great game. If you want to call it a “walking simulator”... it’d be far and by the best one (even if that’s completely inadequate and reductive). If you want to call it a “delivery man sim”... it’d still be the best one (it’s probably the only one, even though a lot of games boil down to “go here and do the thing”). I just think that because it’s Kojima, reviewers tried to apply the same scale as grading curve they’d measure any of his other games on, despite the fact that this isn’t like any of his other games... and he said as much. Long Story Short... My Score... 8.1

I platined this game and never got bored. The game is all about enjoying each moment. It kinda makes a point that you should appreciate life a little more in certain ways. The game is very liberating as well after you beat the 1st area. Delivery management/delivering and raiding outposts is 2 different games on their own, there's a lot of game in death stranding. Not a game for everyone and thats what makes it special. Games shouldnt be afraid at not being liked by everyone.

Ha! Nicely put! I like how you play the game like an action hero. That's how I went about it too. If people say it was boring, I'm not out to disprove that- it was their experience. My experience with it though was fun. I got to 100+ hours before finishing the story. Did a lot of exploring, building, and raiding MULE camps, as well as farming BTs for crystals to donate for building upgrades. Whenever I got to the combat, I tried as much as possible to "style" on my foes. Lots of people say the AI is dumb, and I sort of agree. But I still see people choke and fail and I do as well, especially when loaded with cargo. When I do, I laugh at my clumsiness and stupidity- or laugh at myself trying a risky/stupid idea that I tried (i.e. jumping trike over gaps, failing a sprint through BT areas, carrying too much/too little- not correctly forecasting my route, forgetting to bring nades or charging exoskeleton batteries, ladders etc... and the ensuing- "I wish I had brought...")

thing about this game was exacly how it was for me with mgs phantom pain, its super fun for me as long as there is an ongoing story im directly or indirectly working myself toward while doing missions, it makes it really easy for me to immerse myself, becouse i always find kojima world building interesting, although mgs is more interesting than death stranding to me. the mix of fun mechanics, satisfying tech design and really pretty landscapes, mixed together with the plot of uncovering some kind of truth or mystery.

This is the most impactful game I have played, and the sad thing is how it seemed to have completely gone over most people's heads. This game is about all our worries in the twenty-1st century; war, oil, petrolcapitalism, American history (You literally travel east to west, similar to when settlers were first building America), distance (both physically and emotionally), enviornmentalism, labor, radicalization, the anthropocene, children, how we've failed them, and how they represent our future. That last mission makes me cry like a baby, more so on my second playthrough. My wife pretty much watched me play my entire first playthrough, which was tough at times because her mom was suffering from breast Cancer. She did survive and is well! As for the assexual section at 40:00, I feel like it would have made more sense to describe the devlopment of assexual adjacent people as "natalists", since natalism is a real philosophy that exists in response to the ethics of giving birth to children, it would make sense that people would simply choose not to have any when there doesn't seem to be a future for anyone, but I agree with thor that maybe this was a just a weird localization thing.
