NiGHTS or Death Crimson or Lunacy or Enemy Zero or Panzer Dragoon Saga or other games that'll do well in term of SEO with their titles are plenty mysterious. As is the SEGA Saturn in general. So lets talk about it!

Damn your comment activated some nostalgia for me, but in the weirdest way. I'm gonna miss the bowling alley near my house, despite the fact that I don't really bowl. It just closed this January due to COVID. There was something special about it. It did in fact have this EXACT vibe. The weird ass 90s jazzy carpet. The super strange 3D animations when someone got a strike or spare or gutterball. It even had a small arcade in it. The arcade games were all from the 90s-2000s are somehow all in working order until the end. The sound of the people bowling kinda fading into the background as I played Time Crisis 2 or Virtual On is just a fond memory. They also were mostly just straight up Japanese arcade games. There was even cheap, greasy food and a weird ass room that just had pool tables, a bar and dads smoking (when indoors smoking was legal). Shit had a super oddly comfy vibe. ThorHighHeels videos just kinda give me that vibe with the visuals and sound.

The best thing about the "arcade version" of Death Crimson is that aside from the massive controller it's literally just a Saturn with a copy of Death Crimson sealed inside it for all eternity

Funniest thing, but in Japan, people would create "Death Saturns", which were Sega Saturns that were glued shut that would only play Death Crimson. I stumbled across it being a big fan of Death Crimson and it's story, and it's one of the funniest bits about it. Can't remember where I found this link, but I kept it on my bookmarks tab for quite a while, because shit was just really interesting to me: www.hashiyansoft.com/contents/dc/death.html

The awkward part of the Saturn was how Japanese it is. Like, most of the people who would buy one were people interested in weird Japanese franchises. Probably doesn't help that it's killer apps were way too Japanese for western audiences to appreciate at the time so most weren't localized.

One of the best things about Christmas Nights is how the backgrounds change depending on what time of year it is. Also fun is when you unlock the Sonic into Dreams present and get to run around the maps as ...well Sonic the Hedgehog. It's a shame that the Saturn never got a proper Sonic game as Sonic into Dreams and the over world in Sonic Jam showed what potentially could have been.

The first game Thor mentions seems to be referencing the story: Watcher in the attic, by Edogawa Ranpo. I read a manga adapting some of his stories, so I don't know how similar they are, but in the manga adaptation a guy goes into a boarding house, finds a hidden door to the attic where he can spy the others and starts getting over his head with the power he holds over people's lives.

The Saturn was hella weird in so many ways which has given it an enduring place in my heart. While I never really had the pleasure to own one a friend of mine got one back in the day solely on the strength of the Genesis and it was interesting to see the most mainstream gamer of kids stuck with all this obscure shit get his mind expanded. And then of course there was a summer where I watched a friend blow his college fund on collecting all the rarest titles for the system and gained a deeper appreciation for what it could do. Perhaps one day I'll be able to start getting into this scene.

As someone who owned a Saturn back in the day it's super cringe hearing so much criticism for it in the mainstream. The console was amazing. And no, i didn't even play any imports on it. I was going to receive a Playstation originally for my birthday.......but I'm glad I got the Saturn because it's undeniable the different flavour of gaming I got from it. I later had a PS2 and PS3 so playing older PS1 games is not an issue.......but without a Saturn then I'd have missed out. Wow the Saturn actually sounds pretty cool. I never knew, since any video that talks about Sega consoles when they get to the Saturn just kinda say LOL the Saturn didn't have any mainline Sonic game and it sucked, and then move on to Dreamcast and how much they loved it.

Dude, I think youre honestly treating games very much like art. Honestly your exploration into gaming is somehow just very interesting and shows a side to gaming that's kind of awkward but cool. I dunno how I found you when you had way less subs but you truly do kick ass man. Happy to still be watching.

I've never played any Saturn games but I've always been interested in giving it a shot. As someone who loves this era of games as my favorite, specifically the PS1, the Saturn shares a lot of those early 3D vibes I really like.
@cloudtx
@cloudtx 3 жыл бұрын
@The Ninth Heart Stupid comment. The PS1 won that generation for a reason. It had a ton more games and among them a lot of the best games in that era. This is not to say that the Saturn is devoid of quality titles, I'm interested in trying some, but even if you like the Saturn more your comparison is nonsense.

Oh wow. This is the first time someone has made me appreciate some 3D games for the Saturn. 3D was an afterthought so it never stood a chance against ps1 and n64. I recently got a MODE for it, so I’m definitely going to play Lunacy.
