Thanks! I'm using the Suhr Aldrich pickups here. They're extremely hot, and best suited for death metal. I think this kind of material sounds best played through guitars with single coils, but it's really up to personal preference.

stupid question but how do you even hear the notes in this song? when I try to listen to it (I mean the orginal song on their album) I can only hear relentless drumming and few high notes on the 1st guitar let alone the bass line, am I just deaf or am I doing something wrong?
@noobsauce6 жыл бұрын
It's pretty hard to decipher a lot of Deathspell's material. The drumkit is panned over the entire spectrum and everything has a pretty claustrophobic feel. I use decent budget monitors for listening and I use a program called Transcribe to manipulate the track and try to isolate audio as much possible. It still requires a lot of ear work and being able to identify intervals within chords. On top of that it has to make sense on guitar, so that's also a deciding factor in transcribing
@Serfer3256 жыл бұрын
seems like a pretty tough job, I will leave it for ones better than me :P
@EmptyTenementSpirit6 жыл бұрын
I noticed after I learned the song from this video that it was FAR easier to understand the sounds that are going on even in totally different Deathspell Songs. They tend to use many of the same chords and notes across their whole discography, think of it like their musical footprint, once you've figured some of it out it's easier to decipher in the long time. The only one that really fucks with me now is Internecine Iatrogenesis, which has some crazy and unfamiliar things in it to me.
@noobsauce6 жыл бұрын
Limb Legion That's great to hear! And I agree, learning this song was a huge eye opener
@EmptyTenementSpirit6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same. Since I have absolutely no formal musical education, it really gave me a good feel of what sorts of sounds I like to use when I write my own riffs for both black metal and death metal styles, well, I say "write" but it's more like come up with it and never write it down so it just floats in my head. Plus, it generally aided dexterity a lot, especially that crazy section in the middle. I still watch this video way more than is probably healthy to keep inspiration and get some ideas of better ways to move my fingers. Haha.

Can you do a video explaining these crazy chords? I always though they used some exotic tuning but I read somewhere it is d standard, true?
@the_trash_mane58754 жыл бұрын
Not the OP but yes they use D standard. A lot of Deathspell Omega's chords are dissonant/ diminished chords which give the chaotic sounds. Read about dissonant chords and that can explain most of the crazy shit
@noobsauce4 жыл бұрын
Correct, this is played in D standard. I don't think I'll ever go into theoretical analysis on this channel, mainly because doing it properly takes a lot of time that I simply don't have. Also, my knowledge of theory is pretty limited, so I don't think I'm the right man for the job. All I know is what I learned in a few high school classes. Regarding the chords in this song, they're not all that crazy. Often times, they're just power chords with added color tones that are right next to either the root or fifth. A lot of the "magic" also comes from using open string notes in conjuction with fretted notes, and this is where the guitar as an instrument truly shines. It's an easy way to add color to your music without having to break your fretting hand. Let me know if you have any specific questions, and I'll do my best to answer
@the_trash_mane58754 жыл бұрын
@@noobsauce How long did it take you to learn the song? I'm working on this currently and I don't have much experience under my belt yet so this is kicking my ass.

@@the_trash_mane5875 I'm not sure how long it took, my memory is garbage. I think I spent a couple of days on transcribing alone and probably up to a week getting it up to speed. Don't be discouraged! Playing weird chords properly is a huge hurdle in guitar playing, and I still struggle to this day with a lot. Some of Dan's chords in Artificial Brain songs make me want to chop my fingers off, and he plays them with ease. Just keep at it, and be more patient than you've ever wanted to be. Which strings are you using here and would you recommend them for heavy stuff like this (D standard)?
@noobsauce7 жыл бұрын
I use Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt 11's (Not Even Slinky variety), and I'm usually tuned to E standard (or B if we're talking 7 strings). I recorded this cover in E, and pitch shifted down a whole step. I love the feel of thicker strings and greater tension, it forces you to put a little extra into your playing. It turns me off when I see guitarists playing with 9's and just barely grazing the strings with a pick. But there are pros and cons to everything, so honestly, it all comes down to personal preference. My reasons for thicker gauge: - forces you to play like you mean it (good for metal) - easier for you to keep proper intonation when using giant, finger-bending chords Some people have huge arguments about thicker gauge strings affecting your tone (making it sound boomier), but there are so many other factors involved like pickups/amp/playing style, that it's a pointless discussion. Also, the Cobalt variety of Ernie Ball strings are something I tried one day and never looked back. They feel more solid, stay in tune better, and they have a little more edge to their sound (sharper attack, more high end).
